Or, if you want to extend the adventure, overnight camping is available at a designated campground with breakfast on the 24th. Fees support activities and food. Camp Registration info coming soon!.

On May 18th

at 7pm, we are holding our first Firepit Friday on the church playground. This is a chance for the church and surrounding community to get together. We will roast marshmallows over the fire and then pick items from our s’mores bar (like peanut butter cups, choc-olate and cookies). While some of us will play outdoor games, others will play guitar and sing around the camp-fire. We are hoping to make this a regular event. For more info contact Pastor Devon [email protected]

We are a community of women engaged in mission with women, children and youth. We seek to deepen our relation-ship with God through prayer, study and hands-on mission. We develop creative, supportive fellowships through monthly activities and participate in the global ministries of the United Methodist Women through our gifts to mission.

We are faith, hope and love in action, serving as the hands, feet and heart of Christ in our congregation and our neigh-borhood. Below are just a few of our projects. We invite you to join us!

Annual fundraisers throughout the year financially sup-port our mission efforts. Join our StepALIVE! Team as an actual or virtual walker. http://bit.ly/FUMCwalkteam Monthly crafts with children at Cora Kelly Recreational Center during ALIVE’s Last Saturday Food Distribution. UMCOR Kits for Conference collection efforts on Sunday mornings in May and June.

Quarterly book discussions about social issues through literature. We will discuss A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman on Sunday, June 10.

Our mission, study and fellowship activities are announced each month in SteepleTalk. I look forward to seeing you there.

On the 4th Saturday of each month, volunteers with

ALIVE! help to deliver housewares to families in need in Alexandria. Check out the ALIVE! webpage to volunteer or to donate your extra housewares, https://alive-inc.org/programs.htm. Next delivery date: Saturday, May 26.

We have a great team forming for this year's Lakota Mission trip to Pine Ridge, South Dakota, and we still have room for more! So we wanted to reach out and make sure you all know that you are invited to join the team!

This year will be the team's 25th trip to Pine Ridge! We will be staying at the Porcupine School with modern facilities including access to the showers. The dates for this year's trip are July 1 - 9, 2018. We welcome youth through senior citizens, because there is a job for everyone. With a few more team members, we can do more good work fixing up housing, working with local kids' programs, and par-ticipating in other community events. Check out our Facebook page http://bit.ly/LakotaPage.

The banner photo on the front page shows six of the 13 people from FUMC who attended the Unite To End Racism rally held on April 4. If you would like to join follow-up discussions and actions on this and other social issues, join the list serve for our Church In Society group. Contact David Bissette [email protected].

Every other year, our youth sponsor a food drive for Rising Hope and this is the year! We launched in April and in early June we will schedule a trip to deliver the cans and packaged food to Rising Hope. We will also have opportunities for the youth to box and count the canned goods. Our goal this year is 7,000 cans. We will be having youth make an-nouncements in church as well, so thank you for all of your encouragement on this service project.

Our covenant missionary, Clara Biswas, will be here for dinner and a presentation on her work in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

“The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it.” ~Psalm 24:1

The Caring for God’s Creation team is committed to fostering loving stewardship of and respect for every part of God’s creation in our individual and congregational way of life. Examples of our efforts have included the installation of low flow toilets, bicycle racks, support for the ALIVE! vegetable garden and a water bottle filler in the Fellowship Hall. We have offered opportunities for education and personal growth through experiences like the recent Simplicity Retreat and Carbon Fast, as well as SING (Spirituality In Nature Group) events. In the future we hope to be able to increase the purity of church recycling and the use of recycled materials as well as reduce the use of plastics and Styrofoam.

With pastoral, Council and Trustee support, our commitment to this effort has been “made official” by our signing the Green Church Initiative Covenant, an initiative of the Virginia UMC Conference, which provides very specific environmental goals in the areas of worship, discipleship (learning and teaching), stewardship (lifestyles of individuals and the church), missions (community, national and global involvement) and evangelism. These goals are aligned with the UMC Social Principles statement on the environment (www.umc.org/what-we-believe/social-principles-social-creed)

You are invited to join in this effort. If interested, please contact Doug Brown 703-505-1968, [email protected] or Melanie Dunn-Chadwick 703-941-6967, [email protected].

Aged to Perfection will tour the National Arboretum on Thursday, May 17th

. We plan for the church bus to leave our parking lot at 10am. Established by Congress in 1927, the Arboretum is in Northeast DC. It features 446 acres of trees, shrubs and floral plants, with 9.5 miles of winding roadway. We have arranged for a guide to ride with us on the bus tour with short stops at the Bonzai museum and herb garden. The cost for the bus tour will be $10 each. Lunch will follow in Alexandria. Seats on the bus are limited so please make your reservation as soon as possible. Contact Kathy Richards at [email protected] or 703-379-4150.

FUMC will host a seminar on legal, financial and estate planning on Wednesday, May 9, from 7pm to 9 in the Fellowship Hall. The seminar will be led by Sam Roberson, a prominent estate planning lawyer in D.C. The seminar is titled Getting Your Legal Ducks in a Row. The seminar is sponsored by the Finance Committee and provides an opportunity to consider strategies for planned giving to the church. Refreshments will be provided. For further information contact Al Ross at [email protected]

This performance will feature the brilliant technique, beautiful melodies, and lush tone colors common to British Brass Band Quartets. Highlights of the program are two works written to test championship level brass bands: Alla Burlesca and Fancy’s Knell by Gilbert Vinter. On the second half the quartet will be joined by additional brass and percussion players to perform Philip Sparke’s dazzling Year of the Dragon. The Dominion Brass Quartet is a new Washington DC-based chamber ensemble inspired by traditions of the British Brass Band style popular in the United Kingdom and Europe. Come, see, and feel your heart warmed. ~Isaiah 55:12

The earth is ripening, responding to the longer days of sunlight. Prepara-tion now transitions to planting. This is a time of remembering that water, healthy soil and grace work together to nourish the growing season. Soon blossoms will give way to ripe vegeta-bles that will feed those who receive them at the Alexandria ALIVE! food bank. Pollinators are arriving to relish the sweet nectar of native plants. They delight us with their outrageous colors and variety while also doing their part to ensure that plants bear fruit. Gar-dening is a reminder that we, too, ben-efit from spiritual watering, grounding and grace. ~Anne Wilson [email protected]

Wednesday, May 9, 7PM in the Par-lor. We are looking for knitters, ‘crochet-ers’ and anybody who wants to learn – to help us make and donate items to those less fortunate than our-selves. Patterns will be provided for projects such as hats, mittens, scarves, leg warmers, baby blankets, shawls, etc. We are seeking donations of yarn, needles and hooks (any type) but especially acrylic yarns. Donations can be left in the specially marked box in the Narthex/Foyer. Contact Barbara Keiser for info: 703-671-2456

UMCOR collects hygiene, school, and cleaning kits for distribution within the United States. Kits help sustain everyday life for people who lack ready access to essential supplies when a disaster strikes. International distribution of relief supplies was discontinued December 31, 2017. Relief grants will be offered to international partners to allow for local purchase and assembly of kits which are more culturally appropriate. Fairlington United Methodist Women will be collecting items for the hygiene and school kits as well as monetary donations during the month of May. There will be containers in the Narthex and outside the Parlor for you to drop off your donations. There will also be a member of the FUMW in the Fellowship Hall between services to collect donations. Please take this list with you to the store. UMCOR is very specific regarding what they will accept, so please use this list of items for each kit:

Earlier this year, the Finance Committee recommended and the Church Council approved a $953,000 operating budget for Fairlington United Methodist Church for 2018. This budget is allocated as follows: 54.3% - Staff Compensation, Health, Pension, Housing and other benefits Our pastors and staff are essential to the wonderful worship, music, education and youth programs that we enjoy and inspire us week after week. Our office staff and custodial staff keep our office and church building operating efficiently each and every day to serve our congregation and the community around us.

16.8% - Conference Apportionments - These are funds FUMC contributes each year to ministries in the Alexandria District, the Virginia Conference and the world.

15.4% - Maintenance/Insurance/Utilities - Our Trustees do a great job of maintaining our church building, parking lots, and grounds. Just like our own homes, we must invest funds every year to maintain and protect our building, make repairs and upgrades so that FUMC can continue to be a visual symbol of our Christian presence on King Street in Alexandria.

8.6 % - Programs and Missions - We have so many wonderful programs at FUMC to welcome, nurture and serve, including our musical choirs and education programs. We have committees working within the congregation to provide inspiring and educational programs. We have numerous mission programs in the Alexandria area to serve our neighbors in Alexandria and beyond.

4.9% - Office Expenses - These costs include office supplies, telephones, printing and copying, computers, all of the things our pastors, staff and office staff need to support our many FUMC programs.

Your gifts help support all of the foregoing categories of spending in our operating budget. At the end of the first quarter of 2018 we are off to a good start for 2018 with your gifts running approximately 5% ahead of 2017 and also ahead of expenses by a similar amount. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Blessings, Randy Nuckolls, Chair

The Fairlington United Methodist Church Softball Team (AKA Fair-Met) was organized 62 years ago under the sponsorship of the United Methodist Men. Theodore Flechsig, a member of the church at the time, was instrumental in getting the team off the ground. Under the leadership of Col. Carroll Donnell, the team played in the Arlington County Church Fast Pitch Softball League. Col. Donnell coached the team from 1956-1961. During this time, Mike Norelli also coached the team. In 1962, Sam David became coach and stayed with the team until 1966.

In 1964, the team changed to playing slow pitch softball in the Arlington County League. Bob Love became coach in 1966. In 1972, the team moved to the Fairfax Church Softball Coop League . In 1991, Jim Wheeler became manager of the team. From 1999 to 2010 The team played in the the Fairfax Adult Softball League in both the summer and fall leagues. In 2010, the team moved to the Vienna Softball League, where the team played through 2016. In 2017, the team disbanded.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

The Fairlington team boasts a remarkable record of success. For many years they were recognized as one of the best teams in Northern Virginia as well as the State of Virginia. The Fair-Met team participated in league games and tourna-ments in Fairfax County, as well as tournaments throughout Northern Virginia. The team also traveled to tournaments in Fredericksburg, Richmond, Virginia Beach, Pennsylvania, Maryland; Delaware; and North Carolina. The team also made it to the Amateur Softball Association’s (ASA) National Church Championships in Louisville, Kentucky in 1971, and in Marietta, Georgia in 1983.

Unfortunately, a complete record of the team’s accomplishments during the early years could not be found. However, we do know that the team won the league championship in 1959, 1962 and 1963. Fortunately, records for the team from 1966 through 2016 are fairly complete thanks to Robert Love, Robert Coco, and Jim Wheeler. During that time the team played over 2,500 games , winning 1,800 of them, winning many championships.

I know I speak for Bob Love when I say it was an honor and a privilege to play on and manage the FUMC team in the spirit of community service and Christian fellowship. I would like to thank everyone who donated their time and effort. And a special thanks to Teri Godwin, Janet Coco, and Marjy Wheeler for keeping the official scorebook for over 1,000 games. Finally, I also would like to thank the United Methodist Men and the church for all their support.
