Throughout the last several decades, the average American’s life expectancy has increased significantly. Statistics show that in 2011 there were 5.7 million people 85 or older; by 2040 that number is expected to be 14.1 million.

Advances in medicine and technology, as well as growing awareness of healthy lifestyle practices, mean that Americans not only live longer, but they also live better.

However, as the population ages, needs change and senior living communities are becoming a vital partner in addressing those needs. The decision to relocate to a senior living community is not easy. However, making that choice offers a number of important benefits, including physical, emotional, social and mental stimulation, as well as the opportunity to thrive in a safe, supervised environment. Currently, approximately one million Americans live in some type of senior living facility and an anticipated two million seniors will reside in such communities by 2030.

Alzheimer’s is the most expensive disease in America, with costs soaring past a quarter of a trillion dollars.

▪ In 2017, the direct costs to American society of caring for those with Alzheimer’s will total an estimated $2 59 billion. ▪ Average per-person Medicare spending for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias is more than three times higher than average per-person spending across all other seniors. Medicaid payments are 23 times higher. ▪ Unless something is done, in 2050, Alzheimer’s will cost $1.1 trillion (in 2017 dollars). ▪ Nearly one in every five Medicare dollars is spent on people with Alzheimer’s. In 2050, it will be more than one in every three dollars.

Alzheimer’s kills – and deaths have nearly doubled in the last 14 years. ▪ Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United

States and the 5th leading cause of death for those aged 65 and older. ▪ Deaths from Alzheimer’s increased 89 percent from 2000 to 2014, while deaths from other major diseases (including heart disease, stroke, breast and prostate cancer, and HIV/AIDS) decreased. ▪ Alzheimer’s is the only cause of death among the top 10 in America that cannot be prevented, cured, or even slowed.

Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s is exceptionally demanding. ▪ In 2016, more than 15 million family members and friends provided 18.2 billion hours of unpaid care to people with Alzheimer’s

Building the Self-Esteem of the Alzheimer’s ResidentBy Micha Shalev

Alzheimer’s residents were once vital men and women, leading active, interesting lives. Left in the wake of a disease which robs them of personality, memory, and familiar behaviors, they become pale shadows of their former selves. Residents, families, and friends grieve over this incredible loss. Frustrated and confused over increasing loss of old abilities, they suffer also a loss of self-esteem.

Care members and staff can build self-esteem in Alzheimer’s residents by building on their past experiences and recognizing those things that were “important” to them. Listed below are ideas for activities and projects designed to raise the self-es-teem of residents in facilities.

Some have been particularly successful base on my personal experience and utilized very often.

1) Display case featuring momentous, pictures, brief bibliographic materials about the life and accomplishments of the person featured. Each month, a different person is recognized. The person may be chosen by criteria such as birthdate, occupation, home town, etc. Family and staff often benefit, too, when reminded or told about the person’s past life. It has the potential of generating a new respect andappreciation.

2) Monthly posters listing all persons sharing a birth month.

3) Recorded memories - One family reported treasuring an audio tape of a num-ber of sessions between the Activity Director and their grandparent.

The tape was of reminiscence sessions with a woman who had lived all her life in the town and who, despite memory lost, could share little known or lost facts about early life in the town. The tape, having special value, became not only a family treasure but also part of the library’s holdings.

4) Special tributes - Families often find unique ways to preserve and recognize those things that were important and meaningful in their relationship with the patient. - One daughter, an artist, designed and painted a beautiful plaque which hangs at the head of her mother’s bed extolling all the wonderful things her mother did as a young woman when she was healthy and alive with energy and a will to be involved. The plaque asks her caregivers to see her as she is but also to remember the person she was - loving, giving, and very important to those who knew and loved her.

5) Family albums can be especially useful in prompting old, pleasurable memories in the patient. Families may also benefit from being reminded of important past connections. Information shared with staff helps them know the person better. Staff, for example, were very surprised to learn that a resident who was very impaired had been a pilot in the early 1900’s. This was certainly a singular accom-plishment for a woman. An aide reported having a fascination and a new respect for the patient upon learning this bit of personal history.

6) Other projects and activities can be varied depending on objective. Many Alz-heimer’s residents retain to some degree special talents. One resident, for example, loved to recite Shakespeare. Find ways of recognizing this while being careful not to remind or emphasize the person’s present deficits or reduced capacity. Involve families. Let them help compile needed information to personalize your project. Activities can range from recording for future generations old family recipes to organizing special artifacts from the patient’s career, civic involvement, military service, or hobby.

7) Celebrate the Mundane - “ Things I’ve done, places I’ve been, etc.” - which cap-tures the essence of persons’ lives. For example, one of the authors participated in recording an oral history of elderly blue collar workers in the tobacco industry in the early 1900*s. There was great pride in their participation in this project.

8) Another project might involve shared characteristics between staff and residents, i.e. schools attended, home town, birthdays. These projects have the potential to build self-esteem of residents. However, most important is the day-to-day practice of showing unconditional respect, affection, and regard for each Alzheimer’s patient as a valued and special member of your nursing home com-munity.

REVIEWS FROM CARING.COM

My family member has been a resident at The Oasis for several months and we are more than pleased with the care she has received. I am a retired registered nurse and was looking for a facility that would provide attention to the details of her individual needs on every level. I have not been disappointed. The Oasis management and line staff are sensitive, professional and dedicated to the residents and their fam-ilies. I highly recommend Oasis to others like us who need to know their loved one is safe and well cared for at all times.

There cannot be another Home that cares for it’s residents the way the staff at Oasis cares for my moth-er. The entire staff including nurses, aides, servers, etc. know the residents by name and treat them with kindness and respect. Hugs are freely given to all! Ben and Micha are there every day and you can tell after talking with them for just a few minutes that this is not just a business for them. They are deeply invested in the lives of the residents. I give the entire team and enthusiastic five stars!

The atmosphere is beautiful at Oasis. It’s a gorgeous facility that’s very light. You don’t feel like you’re in a skilled nursing home, rest home or assisted living at all. It’s just a beautiful space, and I really think that that’s the space that affects people and visitor’s mood. The staff is very friendly, very caring and very re-sponsive. The care so far for my mother has been excellent. They seem to know how to handle her, what her needs are and what to do with her. She does not participate much in the activities but they do have varied activities and activities going on all day. And you know staff are there looking out after the resi-dents all day. The food seems to be good too. My mother’s room is also very nice. It’s a single room with her private bathroom. It’s well furnished, very bright and cheery. She has a wonderful view of Worcester. She can see Indian Lake and that’s very nice. Overall, I am very pleased with the care.

Memory care at Dodge Park Rest Home and Oasis at Dodge Park:

Where everyone knows your name II magine a place where individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia feel right at home. Imagine a place where they can regain a sense of fulfillment. Dodge Park Rest Home and Oasis at Dodge Park on Randolph Road in Worcester are just such a setting. The facilities’ N’efesh to N’efesh Memory Care Program (from the Hebrew for “soul to soul”) strives to help those strug-gling with memory loss at any stage to build and maintain cognitive ability. Based on research from a variety of recent studies, Dodge Park Rest Home and Oasis’s specially designed program is comprised of six pillars of activities in which memory care resi-dents and their families join in. These include Physical Exercise, Stress Reduction, Cognitive Exercise, Specialized Digital Programs, Purposeful Social Activities and Support Groups and Resident Council. Resident-centered care is at the cornerstone of the N’efesh to N’efesh Memory Care Program at Dodge Park and Oasis at Dodge Park. Caregivers, staff and the management team are specially

trained to focus on the strengths of each person and to understand a resi-dent’s preferences, accomplishments and family ties. Each resident’s pref-erences and life story contribute to the individualized care plan and activi-ties they take part in, from dining choices to daily activities and specialized care. Oasis’s Activity Coordinator Amy Bustin says: “One of my favorite activities at Oasis at Dodge Park is our Reminiscing Program. Here the residents and caregivers share their personal stories. We use this time to learn about each other and recall experiences from the past. A simple question of ‘where did you grow up?’ brought up old memories for one resident and we were soon talking about summers at ‘the World’s Fair’ in St. Louis. For residents, re-calling the past is important as their disease can rob them of these moments. Care-

givers in turn have been able to learn about the lives of the residents. Using these tools has seamlessly turned my resi-dents from the people I assist to those who feel like family. I feel blessed to know each of them. “In my experience, music has been one of the most pow-

erful tools we have in the memory-care program. One resident could not recall how many children they had but was able to sing all of the words to ‘God Bless America’ with me. I have used sing-a-longs many times to redirect those that are upset. The familiarity of the music is comforting while sharing the song experience creates a bond between residents and the aides. A quiet room can quickly be filled with ‘Take Me Out to the Ball Game’ or ‘Grand Ol’ Flag.’ The variety of music pro-grams we have each week is engaging—from drum circle to upbeat aerobics to quiet background music early in the morning. Music has become one of the best ways to make connections on a daily basis.” www.oasisatdodgepark.com https://dodgepark.com 877-363-4775 508-853-8180

‘We feel so fortunate that we found the Oasis’ Judy Atkins Bath’s mother Nancy Atkins has been a resident at Oasis at Dodge Park since just after the facility opened in 2017 and is thriving in the environment due in large part to the N’efesh to N’efesh Memory Care Program. “What works best for my mom,” Ms. Bath said, “is the music that’s offered, which brings back memories of entertainers she enjoyed when she was younger: Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Roger Whitaker. We have a little player in her room too. When the music starts, she is in the front row center and singing and very happy and engaged with it. When Bill McCarthy announced ‘this one’s for you, Nancy, and broke into Que Sera Sera (‘Que sera, sera/whatever will be, will be/the future’s not ours to see/Que sera, sera/what will be, will be’), she loved it. It is just wonderful for Oasis’s staff and (Activity Director) Amy Bustin to do this. Amy’s great, dancing and clapping with the residents. We feel so fortunate that we found the Oasis.” `Mom is doing fabulous at the Oasis’ Lisa Swalec’s mother Margaret Leroux—”Judy”—benefits immensely from the affection showered on her by an Oasis staff that is “compassionate and patient,” Ms. Swalec says. “She was at home with twenty four-hour care for two years. Oasis gives her more socialization than she was getting. My father was briefly at Dodge Park before he died. The amaz-ing thing is the music, Saturday nights and Sunday after-noons. The whole facility is memory care and residents are allowed to move about; they are not confined to one wing.”

Doctors’ advice on staying healthyExercise, healthy eating, and a positive outlook are important to maintaining good health, but there’s moreyou can do. From the Good Housekeeping website comes this advice from doctors on further steps you can take:

• Don’t overdo antibiotics. Although antibiotics are useful in fighting infections, overuse can weaken yourimmune system and cause weight gain (because of their effect on gut bacteria). Talk with your doctor about alternatives.

• Watch your Vitamin D levels. The sun is an import-ant source of Vitamin D, but for people who don’t (orcan’t) get outside that much, supplements can prevent Vitamin D deficiency.

• Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Dehydration can cause bloating, constipation, headaches, and fatigue.

• Get enough rest. Getting enough sleep is important, but so is resting while you’re awake. Practice yoga andmeditation so you’re not just rushing through your day until you crash.

• Be skeptical. Don’t believe the hype behind every new diet or health fad. Investigate before launching into a new routine that might not provide all the benefits it claims.

Health tips for the 60+ crowdMaintaining good health is a lifelong activity, but it can get more difficult as we age. The NBC News websiteoffers this healthy advice for people over 60:

• Buy good sneakers. Look for top-quality sneakers specifically designed for walking. Start slowly, thenincrease your walks as time goes on. Good shoes will protect your feet, giving you more motivation to getmoving.

• Practice your balance. Falls are a big hazard for seniors. Try standing on one leg for 30 seconds a day toget a handle on your equilibrium.

• Eat a healthy breakfast. Skip the sweet rolls and sug-ary cereals. Start your day with fruit, yogurt, andwhole grains.

• Practice getting up. On a regular basis, practice get-ting down on the floor and standing up again. Morepractice will improve your ability to get up if you fall.

Women’s brains age more slowly than those of menGood news for women: Your brains age more slowly than males’. According to an article on the NPR website, researchers have found that the metabolism of women’s brains remains healthier and more youthful than that of their male counterparts, making women better equipped to be creative during the later years of their lives.

The findings come from a study of 205 brain scans of people ages 20–82. At first scientists studiedbrain metabolisms to determine a person’s age. Then they observed a significant difference between the ageof some people’s brains and their chronological ages, leading to the discovery that older women’s brains, onaverage, were about four years younger in terms of me-tabolism than men’s brains. The reason is unknown, but the scientists say a higher brain metabolism may give women an advantage in learning and creativity asthey age.

MONEY MATTERS

Renting a house? Here’s what to know beforehandMany people choose to rent a house instead of buying one. It’s a legitimate choice, but the details are somewhat different. The Ladders website offers this advice to first-time renters:

• Know the Fair Market Rent (FMR). FMR is set by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and can be accessed at RentData.org. You can also simply check rental listings to compare rents, although you should be aware that you may be comparing very different types of housing.

• Be ready for a background check. Landlords will probably look at your financial background before renting to you, so take care of anything that might affect your credit rating and be ready for some investigation into your overall financial situation.

• Negotiate. You don’t have to capitulate to a landlord’s de-mands. Be prepared to negotiate move-in dates and the like so you can make the best deal for yourself.

• Ask about subletting. Check the details of your lease for any restrictions on subletting your home. You may not be planning to do so when you move in, but the option can be useful if your circumstances change.

• Know what you can change. Can you repaint walls or remodel your kitchen while you’re renting? Who’s responsible for the upkeep? Make sure you know this ahead of time before you’re stuck with surprise fees or get a chunk of money taken out of your security deposit.

Don’t make these money mistakesYou don’t have to be a financial genius to handle your money successfully. Just avoid simple mistakes, as are spelled out on the CNBC Make It website:

• Investing in trendy stocks. If you’re investing, don’t put your money into the latest stock market darling. Your best bet is to invest a specific amount every month into low-risk options, such as index funds. Index funds are both inexpensive and diversified, and unlike individual stocks, they historically earn a steady, predictable rate of return.

• Buying a new car. Cars start to depreciate the moment you drive them away from the dealership. To get the most for your money, financial experts recommend purchasing an almost-new car that’s coming off the end of a two- or three-year lease. Such vehicles are usually in good condition with few miles on the odometer, so you can get a good discount.

• Forgetting closing costs. When buying a house, remem-ber that you’ll be paying for more than the structureitself. Closing costs like proper-ty taxes, homeowners insurance, inspection fees, and application fees can add up to 2–5 percent of the total, so budget for those when you decide how much house you can afford.

One simple question for financial successSaving money is hard, especially with so much temptation to buy things online, at the grocery store, in a mall, or just walking down the street. Financial expert Suze Orman, on the Refinery29 website, recommends asking yourself one simple question before spending any money: Is this a want, or a need?

Repairing your car so you can get to work is a need. So are groceries and paying your health insurance premiums and oth-er necessary bills. Buying a brand-new car when your current one still runs fine is a want, as is eating out every other night. Learn to distinguish between your wants and your legitimate needs before making a purchase, and you’ll handle your money more effectively and have more left to show for it at the end of the month.

Fuel from plastic? It could be comingRecycling to reduce waste and protect the environment isn’t a new idea. However, a new process may be able to recycle up to 25 percent of our plastic waste into fuel, according to the Science Alert website. Chemists at Purdue University have been able to liquefy the polymers that make up about a quarter of plastic waste and turn it into diesel-like products that can be used as a blendstock for fuel.

The process, called hydrothermal liquefaction, involves heating water under heavy pressure to work as a solvent and catalyst for transforming the molecular makeup of polymers. With the addition of some hydrogen atoms, this converts the plastic into a fluid called naphtha.

Previous results were disappointing, but the Purdue team of chemical engineers recently converted more than 90 percent of the polypropylene used in an experiment into fuel-grade naphtha. Further analysis suggests that the process could be a more efficient and environmentally friendly way of deal-ing with plastic waste than burning it or recycling it.

Salt in space—some 1,500 light-years awayYou don’t have to take this with a grain of salt: A young, distant star is apparently producing sodium chloride—otherwise known as table salt—some 1,500 light-years away, according to the Science Daily website.

The star, Orion Source 1, is a young and massive star inside a dusty cloud behind the Orion Nebula. The chemical traces of the salt were detected by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) radio telescope. Salts have been observed in the atmospheres of older, dying stars, but this is the first time they’ve been detected in a young star. Astronomers speculate that the salts coming from Orion

Source 1 are formed from dust grains colliding and spilling their ingredients into the disk around the star.

Some constituent atoms of the salts are made up of metallic elements such as sodium and potassium, suggesting the possible presence of other metal molecules in space. The discovery may lead scientists to beable to measure the amount of metals in other star-forming regions.

Mysteries of the ancient stone monumentsStonehenge is probably the most well-known monument built by ancient humans, but it’s not alone. As The New York Times reports, there are as many as 35,000 such structures in Europe, ranging from stone circles to dolmens (tablelike structures) and standing stones. Recent radiocarbon dating reveals that the earliest of these stone structures were built in France some 6,500 years ago and their construction spread to England, Ireland, and Scandinavia, as well as along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts over 200–300 years.

Many of the dolmens were used as tombs and could be reopened to permit additional burials. The earliest known dolmen was built in central western France between 4371 and 4262 B.C.

Sicily, Apulia and the Balearic Islands saw a wave of mega-liths built between 1000 and 2000 B.C. Stonehenge was constructed sometime late in the megalithic heyday, in approximately 2500 B.C.

Harvesting MemoriesFamilies are often at a loss when it comes to visiting with loved ones residing in long term care. This is especially true for young children and teens, but even adults can struggle. Activity Professionals can play a vital role in breaking down these barriers by introducing fami-lies to reminiscing techniques we use every day.

If your community has a Family Council, speak to the group about the importance of reminiscing. This can also be done during a Family Night activity. Part of your presentation should include ideas for getting the conversation started.

Getting the Conversation Going• Memory Jar or Box Children can decorate a jar or plastic container. Make copies of the following conversation starter questions in a large font to cut apart, fold, and place in the jar or container to keep in the resident’s room.

Include simple instructions about the purpose of the container and how to use it. Leave a pad of paper under the jar or container for family members to write their loved one’s responses. Someone in the family can take these papers and organize the memories into a booklet.

• Familiar Items These can include pictures, hats, old toys, recipes, tools, baseball cards, stamps, and books can be used to trigger mem-ories. Encourage the families to bring a different item each time they visit. Remind them to allow ample time for their loved ones to exam-ine the item. If they do not respond within several minutes, questions can be asked to encourage conversation and memories.

• Pictures These can include family members or scenes from the res-idents’ past but also be based on many different themes such as farm-ing, military service, cars, planes, toys, holiday celebrations, quilts, and old appliances. For best results, people should select pictures that reflect their loved ones’ interests and previous life experiences.

• Old Picture Books These can be purchased at yard sales and flea markets and are excellent resources for reminiscing. Remind family members to look for books with subjects that relate to their loved one’s interests.

• Topic Notebooks Create notebooks with prepared topic pages and place them in the residents’ rooms. Tailor the books to the gender and age of the person who will be using them. Put a question or topic at the top of each page. Instruct families to use these conversation starters to reminisce if desired and to write down what their loved ones say.

Conversation Starter QuestionsHere are some questions for getting conversations started during vis-its. Encourage family members to expand on them and include topics directly related to their loved one’s life experiences. › What is your earliest memory?

› Were you ever sick as a child? Who took care of you?› What are some of your favorite childhood memories?

› What did you like about being a boy / girl?

› How did your parents meet?

› What is the meaning of your family name?

› Describe the house where you grew up and the street you lived on.

› Tell me about the pets you had as a child.

› Tell me about your first job. Did you like it?

› Describe your happiest birthday.› What was the most memorable present you ever received?› Was there a special person or group that strongly influenced your

early life? What can you tell me about them?› What were your favorite foods as a child?› What was your favorite pastime as a teenager?› What part did religion play in your growing up?› What first attracted you to the person you married?› What surprised you about being married?› What kinds of things did you and your spouse do together?› What is the most interesting period of history you have lived

through?› If you could, what would you like to change about your life?› What is the biggest difference between your childhood and that of

your children and grandchildren?› Have you ever received a special honor or medal?› What experiences did you have during the Depression and/or World

War II?› What’s the most important advice your parents gave you?› Tell me about your first car.› Where did you go on your first vacation as an adult?› Who was your best friend from childhood?› How old were you when you became a parent for the first time?› What surprised you about being a parent?› What holidays stand out in your memory from your childhood?

How did you celebrate them?› Describe your favorite toy and who gave it to you.› Who taught you how to swim?› Who was your favorite teacher and why?› Who taught you to ride a bike?› Did you ever make any major changes in your life? What were they?

Why did you make them?› What is your greatest disappointment?› What is your greatest achievement?› How would you like to be remembered?

Reminiscing is an excellent way to enjoy quality visits with loved ones and preserve important family memories for future generations.

Beta-Glucans…What are they and what benefits do they provide?

Beta-glucans are carbohydrates, or sugars, found in the cell walls of some plants such as oats and barley. Beta-glucans are one form of fiber called soluble fiber. Soluble fiber is recommended by Registered Dietitians to help improve cholesterol levels. Scientific studies have examined the potential health benefits beta-glucans may have, particularly in the area of cholesterol and heart disease and diabetes.

Beta-glucans are also found in certain bacteria and fungi, including certain mushroom varieties. Researchers have been studying the positive effects of mushrooms on the immune system. As part of this physiology, research is also showing that beta-glucans have anti carcinogenic (cancer-preventing) activity.

Beta-glucans in oats is showing promise to significantly reduce LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Because beta-glucans are a soluble fiber, they help slow down digestion in the intestines. This can be particularly beneficial for those with diabetes, as the slower carbohydrates are digested and broken down into glucose (sugar), the slower these sugars are absorbed, keeping blood sugar levels more stable. As beta-glucans travel through the digestive system they take cholesterol with it, keeping it from building up in the body which otherwise could end up contributing to clogged arteries.

Food labeling guidelines allow certain health claims to be used on food packaging. The effects the soluble fiber, including beta-glucans, has on cholesterol is one such allowance. Cereal advertisements, such as Cheerios commercials are using such health claim allowances to promote their food product.

Oats are an easy and delicious way to include beta-glucans into your diet. As a breakfast cereal, quick snack or even dessert such as a topping to an apple crisp, it’s a very versatile food. Add dried fruits to oatmeal to add even more nutrition. Sprinkle oat cereal on yogurt for a more satisfying and filling snack.

Feed Kids Healthy Lunches at HomeWhether it’s during summertime,

school vacation weeks or whenever schools are not insession, it’s important for kids to eat a healthy lunch at home. Most kids, especially those participating in sports or who are very active, will also need to sup-plement meals with healthy snacks to get the fuel and nutrition that they need each day.

One of the most important things to remember is to not skip meals. Getting the right amount of nutrition requires we eat all three meals daily. Additionally, we often feel sluggish if we don’t start the day out with a healthy breakfast. Even busy kids can find a way to eat breakfast. Fresh fruits travel well as does toast with peanut butter.

We all need the same nutrients for a healthy body but kids need a specific amount of nutrients as they are still growing. Calcium is very important for kids because their bones are growing at a rapid rate and it also helps keep teeth strong and healthy. Calcium is found in dairy products such as milk, yogurt and cheese. Choose low fat or fat free versions of these foods to limit the unhealthy amounts and type of fats they eat.Calcium can also be found in leafy greens, some other vegetables such as broccoli and is also available in fortified juices. Read the labels to see which brands are the best. Kids and teens should consume three servings of a calcium-rich food every day.

Protein is also a very important nutrient for kids. Pro-tein supports muscle, cell and tissue growth. Protein can be found in meats, dairy foods, dried beans, eggs, tofu, nuts, lentils and many grains such as quinoa. Include 2-4 ounces of protein in each meal to get the right amount for the day. High protein lunch ideas in-clude a turkey sandwich, hard-boiled eggs, pasta with

meatballs, salad with chickpeas or black beans, or anomelet with turkey bacon and low-fat cheese.

Carbohydrates are the body’s main fuel source. Whole grains are recommended over simple carbohydrates (white bread, white pasta, white rice or sweets for example) for better nutrition and fiber. Fiber is im-portant for a healthy digestive system and for heart health. Read food labels and compare fiber content and look for terms such as “whole wheat” not just the word “wheat.”

Iron is another nutrient particularly important for growing kids. As the body grows, so does the body’s blood supply. Iron carries oxygen in the blood so it’s important we get an adequate amount of iron-rich foods each day. Iron is easily found in meats (especially red meats) but can also be found in dark leafy greens, beans, dried fruits and fortified whole grains. When making salads use spinach or a mixture of lettuce andspinach or kale. Add leafy greens to sandwiches to boost the iron content.

Fruits and vegetables are so very important for a healthy body. To ensure even greater nutrition, eat a variety of colored fruits and vegetables throughout the week. Cut up a red bell pepper for a snack or lunch side-dish, try purple potatoes instead of plain whitepotatoes, add shredded carrots to salads, put spinach and sun-dried tomatoes on your pizza for a delicious change to plain cheese pizza. Kids and teens should be eating at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables com-bined each day so include 2 servings at lunch to stay on-track. When choosing fruit juices be sure they are 100% fruit juice to reduce the amount of added sugars.

DODGE PARKREST HOME

The Bible presents growing old as a normal, natural part of life in this world. There is honor involved in the aging process, because growing old is normally accompanied by increased wisdom and experience. “Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained by a righteous life” (Proverbs 16:31; see also Proverbs 20:29). God wants us to remember that life is short (James 4:14) and that the beauty of youth is soon gone (Proverbs 31:30; 1 Peter 1:24).

Jewish tradition emphasizes that taking care of a parent is a tremendous blessing and mitzvah. As the Talmud in Shabbat 127a says: “These are the fruits a person enjoys in this world, and continues to enjoy them in the World to Come. They are: honoring one’s parents…”

This is particularly true when the elderly have diminished physical and mental capacity, and are confronting their own mortality. But the task of taking care of them need not feel overwhelming.

Among the most disturbing aspects of growing old—especially in cultures that set a high value on rugged individualism— is the increasing frequency of senile dementia as human lifespan increases. It seems eminently unfair that people so afflicted should be robbed of their intellectual, emotional and social vitality while their physical bodies continue to survive. Alzheimer’s disease is a particularly difficult pill to swallow because the cause is unknown and it does not seem to be related to any particularly bad health habits. While progression of Alzheimer’s can be stalled, in part, by continued active involvement in mind-stimulating and physical activity, progression of the disease is nevertheless inexorable.

With Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia on the rise, finding quality care can be a challenge. Recognizing this challenge, The Dodge Park Rest Home and Oasis at Dodge Park developed a new program designed specifically to meet the needs of residents with memory loss. Based on years of experience caring for Alzheimer’s and dementia residents, Dodge Park and The Oasis at Dodge Park Programs partners with family members and care providers to develop a framework that supports the individual, physical, emotional and spiritual needs of memory impaired residents through Cognitive, Fitness and Wellness design.

While there is currently no cure for most progressive forms of dementia, it doesn’t mean we’re powerless against them. Mounting research is building an understanding that there may be ways to slow the progression and change the pathologies of many common dementias, giving those afflicted with them and their families the possibility of more precious, fulfilling moments together.

2. Keeping ActiveMeaningful activities promote a sense of well being, provide enjoyment, maintain functioning levels and support independence. The daily program offers small and large group activities to appeal to each resident’s personal interests.

3. Worthy StaffTaking care of those with memory loss takes a special caregiver. The N’efesh to N’efesh Program staff is specially trained to work with residents to make their lives better by including activities and care that promote self-esteem, laughter, fun and enjoyment of everyday life. Caring for a family member with memory loss can be extremely difficult. In a community that serves residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia, the task of caring for a loved one is shared by many dedicated and highly-trained individuals. With the knowledge that a loved one is well taken care of, caregivers can enjoy more fulfilling time together.
