This weekend is considered World Day Prayer for Vocations. I would like to take advantage and recount how I came into the priesthood. The first time I though about the priesthood was when I was 16. I had just started the Neocatechumenal way (NCW), which is a charism within the Catholic Church dedicated to adult faith formation, and I was in a point in my life where I was not happy. I was very insecure as a person, I was not smart at school, I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up, I was not good at sports, my dad used to drink and I felt that he didn't like me because he was always working. At the same time I met a priest called Fr. Fernando from Spain and I saw a different view of the priesthood and I like it. This priest used to be very strict, but at the same time you felt love by him; he was funny and had a great dedication to the youth. I saw that he was happy, that he enjoyed what he was doing. I thought how can he be happy if he cannot get marry and go to parties and dance. It was through my relationship with this priest that I started thinking, what if I become a priest; there was a desire to be like him.

My participation in the NCW helped me to mature this vocation and when I was 19 years old I was invited to enter the seminary. I wanted to enter a missionary seminary and I was sent to a retreat in Italy and at the end I was going to be told what seminary in the world I would end up. By the providence of God I was sent to a seminary in Newark NJ, five minutes away from my house. I was there for 2 years and then a new missionary-diocesan seminary was opening in D.C. and I was chosen to come here. I studied in Catholic University for 7 years and they were the best years of my life. I was ordained in 2008 and it has been the greatest blessing of my life; I did nothing to deserve such a grace.

Let us ask Jesus, the Good Shepherd, to continue to call men to the priesthood, the diaconate, and consecrated life in all of its forms; they may hear the Lord’s call through your voice!

Why is May the Month of Mary?

The tradition dates all the way back to the ancient Greeks who dedicated the month of May to Artemis, the goddess of fecundity. Romans also claimed May to honor Flora, the goddess of bloom or blossoms. They celebrated “floral games” at the end of April and petitioned Flora’s intercession for all that blooms. In medieval times, a tradition arose of expelling winter at this time of year, since May 1 was considered the start of new growth.

It was during the Middle Ages (eleventh century) that the idea of giving the month of May to Mary began with an old tradition, the “Thirty-Day Devotion to Mary”, which was originally held August 15-September 14. During the month, special devotions to Mary were organized, and this custom, which began in Italy eventually spread elsewhere.

Although we don’t see Mary as a goddess of any sort – Catholics do not worship Mary, we honor, or venerate, her as Jesus’ mother – we’ve adapted the early Greek and Roman customs of honoring important women in their religions by honoring the most important woman in our religion: Mary.

Este fin de semana es considerado el Día Mundial de las Oraciones por las Vocaciones. Me gustaría aprovechar y contar cómo llegué al sacerdocio. La primera vez que pensé sobre el sacerdocio fue cuando tenía 16 años. Acababa de comenzar el camino neocatecumenal (el Camino), que es un carisma dentro de la Iglesia Católica dedicado a la formación de la fe adulta, y estaba en un punto de mi vida donde no estaba contento. Era muy inseguro como persona, no era inteligente en la escuela, no tenía idea de lo que quería ser cuando creciera, no era bueno en los deportes, mi papá solía beber y sentí que no me queria porque siempre estaba trabajando.

Al mismo tiempo conocí a un sacerdote llamado el Padre Fernando de España y vi una visión diferente del sacerdocio y me gusto. Este sacerdote solía ser muy estricto, pero al mismo tiempo te sentías querido por él; era divertido y tenía una gran dedicación a la juventud. Vi que era feliz, que disfrutaba lo que estaba haciendo. Pensé, cómo puede ser feliz si no puede casarse e ir a fiestas y bailar? Fue a través de mi relación con este sacerdote que comencé a pensar: ¿y si me hago sacerdote? Había un gran deseo de ser como él. Mi participación en “el camino” me ayudó a madurar esta vocación y cuando tenía 19 años me invitaron a ingresar al seminario. Quería ingresar a un seminario misionero y me enviaron a un retiro en Italia y al final me iban a decir a cual seminario del mundo terminaría. Por la providencia de Dios fui enviado a un seminario en Newark NJ, a cinco minutos de mi casa. Estuve allí durante 2 años y luego se inauguró un nuevo seminario misionero-diocesano en D.C y fui elegido para venir aquí. Estudié en la Universidad Católica durante 7 años y fueron los mejores años de mi vida. Fui ordenado en 2008 y ha sido la mayor bendición de mi vida; No hice nada para merecer tal gracia.

Pidámosle a Jesús, el Buen Pastor, que continúe llamando a los hombres al sacerdocio, al diaconado y a la vida consagrada en todas sus formas; para que puedan escuchar el llamado del Señor a través de tu voz!

Fue durante la Edad Media (siglo XI) que la idea de darle el mes de mayo a María comenzó con una antigua tradición, la "Devoción de treinta días a María", que originalmente se celebró del 15 de agosto al 14 de septiembre. Durante el mes, se organizaron devociones especiales a María, y esta costumbre, que comenzó en Italia, finalmente se extendió a otros lugares.

Aunque no vemos a María como una diosa de ningún tipo (los católicos no adoramos a María, la honramos o veneramos a ella como la madre de Jesús), hemos adaptado las primeras costumbres griegas y romanas de honrar a mujeres importantes en sus religiones al honrar a la mujer más importante de nuestra religión: María.
