Dear Flock,

I hope your penultimate week of Advent was good. Just a few more days to the great celebration of our Lord’s Nativity.

As I write this, we have just opened the registration for seating for Christmas Masses. In ten minutes, 1140 spots were filled. Glad to know people want to be at Christmas Mass. I look forward to celebrating with all of you.

I hope that the last few days of Advent are fruitful for you. There have been few Christmases in most of our lives where we have needed hope as much as we do now after this crazy year. Between the pandemic, the lives it has taken and impacted, its economic impact, our need to social distance and all the headaches that has brought, the crazy election, natural disasters, protests and rioting, and so much more, WE NEED THIS CHRISTMAS!! We need to be reminded that the God of the Universe became just like you and me. Our Creator became part of His Creation. The Source of our life took on our temporal life so that we could have eternal life. That should bring us joy and hope, regardless of what is going on around us.

So, I will be praying for you this week that your hearts can be prepared for the gift of God’s peace and hope this Christmas season. Praise God for Christmas!

See you Thursday or Friday!!

In Christ’s Peace,

Your Pastor

ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC SCHOOL

Partnering in education for a lifetime. Since 1873

Dear Friends in Christ,

Starting December 21st, our students and faculty will have two weeks to rest, relax, celebrate, and rejuvenate! This past semester we've accomplished many things as a community. We welcomed over forty new families, several new staff members, and reopened every classroom in our building so we could spread out and be safe. We taught children in person, and we were able to use remote learning to keep kids connected and engaged for health and safety reasons. We experienced yet another successful auction using a virtual platform, raised money to support an Unbound student oversees, collected over $1,400 to help a local family for Christmas, and we collected almost 400 sack lunches for the homeless. Most impressive accomplishment - our doors remained open all semester and learning took place in person every day!!! In August most of us would have never believed this could happen; but together, committed to serving our students, we came together and did whatever we could to stay in school.

Together "Believing in Christ, Living the Virtues, and Enlivening our Community" the students, parents, and faculty of St. Joseph School have done the Impossible... Way To Go Jags!!!

We hope each of you experience a very Merry Christmas and A Blessed New Year! Our teachers will be back at school on January 4th, and we will welcome our students back to school on January 5th, 2021. Have a healthy, safe, and joyful holiday season! First Reading 1 Samuel 1:24-28

PARISH & OTHER NEWS

Each year, this season of Advent comes around. We bless one candle each week in Advent.

Let us ask God to bless our family on this final Sunday of Advent:

God of surprises, today we hear about the surprise that Mary

experienced. She is pregnant with your Son!

Help our family to be obedient to your surprises, however they may spring up in our lives.

All of your gifts work for the benefit of your people.

When we light this final candle on our wreath, let us bring your surprise gift of love

to our neighbors and friends.

We ask this through Christ, who is the ultimate surprise gift to the world.

Amen.

VOCATION CORNER

Mary, Joseph, the shepherds and the wise men all knew that Jesus' birth was more than just an ordinary event. Truly, something extraordinary had occurred. They all had great expectations for the baby Jesus, but could they have grasped the value of the gifts Jesus brought to mankind?

Today, we know that we are aided in our personal faith journeys by the priesthood that Jesus created to help all find their way. We often ask for your prayers to support our Priests and those considering the Priesthood. Thank you for those prayers.

Next month, on January 29th, Conception Seminary College, the Archdiocese of KC in KS and the Diocese of KC-St Joseph will host the FINAL Support Our Seminarians (SOS) Benefit - - VIRTUALLY. Normally an event at Union Station, YOU can participate this year from the comfort of your own homes.

More information will appear in this column and is available now at www.supportourseminarians.com.

HOMEBOUND MINISTRY

We are trying to expand and improve our ministry to our fellow parishioners that are unable to join us for Mass here on campus. Can you help us?

Do you know of anyone from our parish who now receives Communion at their place of residence.

Do you know of any parishioners who cannot join us for Mass but would like to have Communion brought to them?

Do you take Communion to anyone? Are you interested in being trained and

commissioned so you can bring Communion to your fellow parishioners?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, please contact Deacon Mark at [email protected].

MARCH FOR LIFE & TEC

With the decision not to take a delegation to March for Life in DC; this opened up the possibility for teens to attend the Teens Encounter Christ (TEC) retreat. We will provide a small group retreat experience for high schoolers on January 16 - 18, 2021 at Prairie Star Ranch (PSR). We will be following social distancing and other safety procedures that allowed Camp Tekakwitha to happen. TEC involves 16 and older adolescents encountering Christ in a way that many have never experienced before.

LADIES GUILD

2021 Dues: $15 per year, due January 1st; $75 for lifetime member. All women of the Parish are considered to be Guild members, and are requested to pay annual dues if possible to help support the Guild financially in its work for the Parish. Your dues may be paid by putting in the Guild Dues envelope that is included in your December packet of envelopes and placing it in the collection, or bringing to the next Guild meeting that we hope can be scheduled early in the year. If you do not receive envelopes, you may put in an envelope marked for Ladies’ Guild. You may also send to our Guild Treasurer, Linda Bosilevac, 5707 Richards Drive, Shawnee, KS 66216.

PARISHIONER UPDATE

Margarita Stetson has moved to Our Lady of Mercy Country Home, 2115 Maturana Dr., Room 302, Liberty, Mo. 64068. She is doing fine, just felt it was time to have a little more help in assisted living. Her heart is still with St. Joseph's. She would love to have cards or notes as the facility is currently not allowing visitors. If you would like to call her, you can obtain her number from Sarah in the parish office.

2020 TAX CREDITS STILL AVAILABLE

You can get a 70% state income tax credit while supporting low-income student scholarships for Catholic schools! Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) offers 70% Kansas income tax credits for individuals and businesses that you can use to eliminate or reduce your state tax liability. (Tax credits are much more valuable than tax deductions, but you’ll get those, too!)

Your donation supports tuition scholarships for qualified low-income students to attend the Catholic school of their parents’ choice in the Archdiocese.

Learn more at cefks.org/taxcredits or call the CEF Tax Credit Office at 721-1572 by December 30, 2020.
