A Visible God We find it difficult to convey ideas to people unless we can actually show them something, demonstrate what we mean. God, who is invisible and truly beyond human understanding, apparently faces the same difficulty. People want to see, not just listen to an idea. So God gave us Jesus Christ, God made visible in the world.

During these past weeks we have seen how Jesus was revealed as an infant to the shepherds and the magi, and then began his adult “public life” at his baptism by John. Today’s Gospel reading tells us of his “first sign,” providing wine for the wedding guests at Cana.

Of course, even Jesus, God made visible, was not always easily understood in his own day, nor is he even now. So we have to ponder what we see: the poverty and simplicity of his birth, his humility and openness before John the Baptist, his kindness and compassion toward people in their ordinary problems, such as running short of wine at a wedding. Treasures From Our Tradition The cause of church unity is commended to Christians for prayer and action every year around this time. This week is not so much to focus on the many divisions within the Christian family, but on bonds of faith and mission. Even though Christians have always shown an inclination to fracture, spin off, and mutate into new expressions, recent history shows some new points of convergence and agreement. Catholics are more firmly rooted in the word of God, for example, and many Protestants are more likely to celebrate Communion than in years past. Some denominations are merging and pooling resources, and people from various traditions are collaborating on projects.

The call of this week is to be mindful of the diversity of our traditions and customs while treasuring what we hold in common. The old advice to “lighten up” is good medicine, because sometimes our differences are delightful and amusing. If someone says, “Let us pray,” a Catholic might close the eyes, bow the head and fold hands; a Protestant might reach out and clasp hands with the person in the next chair; and someone belonging to an Orthodox tradition might stand up with eyes wide open. Each has taken a different path, but the goal is always the same. This is a week not for focusing on the well-worn paths of divergence, but for mutual delight in a common goal. Rev. Sanctuary Candles As you look around the front of the Church, you will notice the candles that hang from the ceiling in front of the main and side altars. These candles are available to be memorialized for the week for a $15 stipend. We post these memorials in the bulletin.

Sacraments, Liturgy and Prayer Flipped-Out Pharisees The Gospel reading for this Sunday is not only the first miracle in John’s Gospel—it is also John’s first mention of Jesus’ mother. I used to find it odd that he addressed her as “Woman.” But in that time the word was more respectful; it could even be affectionate. Jesus does help as his mother requested, but he does so in a way that is a lesson about God’s love. You have probably heard how the Jewish people in Jesus’ time performed purification rituals before eating anything. The cleansings were a sign that they wanted to be like God, completely free from sin. Eventually, it came to mean that you could not approach God until you cleansed yourself. Jesus could have made the wine in bottles or wineskins. But he used the “six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings” (John 2:6). That meant that once they were full of wine, no one could wash themselves from the jars. I wonder how many Pharisees flipped out when they saw that. The point of this is that no one can cleanse themselves. We don’t purify ourselves in order to come to God—we come to God to be purified. God is the only one who can make us holy. God offers this to sinners especially, because sinners who know they need forgiveness are the only ones to receive it. God never forces mercy on anyone. It is offered to those who ask for it. the amount of wine symbolizes the extent of God’s mercy. As there was now more than enough wine for the wedding, God has more than enough mercy for those who need it. Wine is also a symbol of joy in the Old Testament. Tuesday Rosary As Pope St. John XXIII has said, “The Rosary is a magnificent and universal prayer for the needs of the Church, the nations and the entire world”. Please join us in Church immediately following the 9AM Mass each Tuesday morning as our group gathers together to pray the scriptural rosary and other intercessory prayers. The scriptural rosary combines the recitation of the rosary with different scripture passages which are read before each Hail Mary. Rosa Mystica “It is said, the salvation or loss of thousands of souls can depend on the fidelity of a single priest.” All are welcome and encouraged to join us as we meet weekly to participate in a Marian Movement of Priests Prayer Cenacle in which we pray for priests, for their sanctification and constant growth in holiness and virtue, for seminarians, as well as for future vocations to the priesthood. In addition, our group mails out greeting cards to priests serving in the Archdiocese, to express our appreciation and thanks for their dedication and self-sacrificing efforts in serving us through their priesthood, and to seminarians, as a means of encouragement and support. Liturgy Screen Operators needed Volunteers are needed to operate the computer for the overhead screen projection during Mass in the Chotin Center. It is easy to do; a brief run-through will have you trained in a flash. All adults and high school students are welcome. High School students can get service hours for their service. Catholic Daughters of the Americas Are you looking to join a ministry to get more involved in supporting the families of Our Lady of the Lake? Do you know a family that could benefit from a meal? Come help Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court 2741, Fr. Joseph Cazenavette, as we bring meals to families in need. This ministry will cater to new parents, bereavement, and people recovering from medical issues (surgery or cancer treatments.) Respect Life Ministry Spiritual Adoption Program– Week 16: This week fat begins to form underneath skin, providing your baby with insulation for the coming months. Did you know that both baby and placenta are now about the same size? Your little one has reached 4.57 inches and approximately 3.53 ounces. His head and neck are held straighter now. Bone marrow is now beginning to form. His heart is pumping as much as 6 gallons of blood a day and beats at a rate about double your heart rate. Your baby has learned to breathe! This is apparent from the regular movements of his chest. Isn’t it amazing that he is able to breathe “underwater,” inhaling and exhaling small amounts of amniotic fluid? These actions help the lungs to develop and grow.

OLL Men’s Spirituality

The OLL Men's Spirituality Group is a group of lay Catholic men faithful to the teachings of the Magisterium of our Catholic Church, united in our love for God, and dedicated to making this world a better place by studying, proclaiming, and living His Word.

Please come by and get some goodies after the 9:00 AM, 10:30 AM, and 12:00 Noon Masses in the cafeteria. The proceeds this year will again benefit the Haitian Parish of St. Benoit. This is a great opportunity to support Catholics that have been devastated by natural disasters, but they don’t have the resources to rebuild. Every donation can make a difference!
