At Home Worship Guide – March 22nd, 2020

Wherever we are, we worship together

In light of not being able to gather together for corporate worship on Sunday, here are some things you can use wherever you are. Scripture, prayer, singing – these are not just practices for when we are in big groups, but practices for individuals, small gatherings, and families too. We encourage you to use this plan, knowing that all of Greenfield is following this together, and while we may not be in the same room, our hearts can be unified in praise and prayer as we turn our eyes to God. Call to Worship – Psalm 18:1-3,49 NIV

1 I love you, Lord, my strength. 2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. 3 I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies. 49 Therefore I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; I will sing the praises of your name. Be Still My Soul (In You I Rest) Verse 1 Be still my soul the Lord is on thy side

Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain Leave to thy God to order and provide In ev'ry change He faithful will remain Be still my soul thy best thy heav'nly friend Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end

Verse 2 Be still my soul thy God doth undertake

To guide the future as He has the past Thy hope thy confidence let nothing shake All now mysterious shall be bright at last Be still my soul the waves and winds still know His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below

Chorus In You I rest in You I found my hope

In You I trust You never let me go I place my life within Your hands alone Be still my soul (Be still my soul be still my soul)

Verse 3 Be still my soul the hour is hastening on

When we shall be forever with the Lord When disappointment grief and fear are gone Sorrow forgot Love's purest joys restored Be still my soul when change and tears are past All safe and blessed we shall meet at last

providing essential services at this time • For those who are self-isolating due to illness, travel, age, or a

pre-existing health condition • For our municipal, provincial, and federal levels of government • For wisdom for the public sector businesses • For students and teachers as they adjust • For all those who have experienced layoffs, reduced work hours,

Page 5: Sunday March 22, 2020...At Home Worship Guide – March 22nd, 2020 Wherever we are, we worship together In light of not being able to gather together for corporate worship on Sunday,

• For those we know who are sick, hospitalized, or recovering at home and may need extra care

• For those who are feeling anxious in these uncertain times • For those who are particularly lonely or isolated • For those with continuing heath concerns: Bill Muller, Jake

Penner, Margaret Baron, Ed Baron, Vi Breitkreuz, Beverley McKenzie, Verda Schalm

• For wisdom for how we can show the love of Christ in very practical ways in our own neighbourhoods and networks of friends

Pray through Psalm 91 NLT Either read aloud or have someone in your small gathering read this psalm aloud as a prayer of trust and faith as we call upon the name of the Lord together (all individual pronouns are changed to plural to reflect that we are in this together as a community)

1 Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 This we declare about the Lord: He alone is our refuge, our place of safety; he is our God, and we trust him. 3 For he will rescue us from every trap and protect us from deadly disease. 4 He will cover us with his feathers. He will shelter us with his wings. His faithful promises are our armor and protection. 5 Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. 6 Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. 7 Though a thousand fall at our side, though ten thousand are dying around us, these evils will not touch us. 8 Just open our eyes, and see how the wicked are punished. 9 If we make the Lord your refuge, if we make the Most High our shelter, 10 no evil will conquer us;

Page 6: Sunday March 22, 2020...At Home Worship Guide – March 22nd, 2020 Wherever we are, we worship together In light of not being able to gather together for corporate worship on Sunday,

no plague will come near our home. 11 For he will order his angels to protect us wherever we go. 12 They will hold us up with their hands so we won’t even hurt our feet on a stone. 13 We will trample upon lions and cobras; we will crush fierce lions and serpents under our feet! 14 The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. 15 When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. 16 I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.”

NIV:

15 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. 9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for

Page 9: Sunday March 22, 2020...At Home Worship Guide – March 22nd, 2020 Wherever we are, we worship together In light of not being able to gather together for corporate worship on Sunday,

one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other.

MSG:

15 1-3 “I am the Real Vine and my Father is the Farmer. He cuts off every branch of me that doesn’t bear grapes. And every branch that is grape-bearing he prunes back so it will bear even more. You are already pruned back by the message I have spoken. 4 “Live in me. Make your home in me just as I do in you. In the same way that a branch can’t bear grapes by itself but only by being joined to the vine, you can’t bear fruit unless you are joined with me. 5-8 “I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you’re joined with me and I with you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant. Separated, you can’t produce a thing. Anyone who separates from me is deadwood, gathered up and thrown on the bonfire. But if you make yourselves at home with me and my words are at home in you, you can be sure that whatever you ask will be listened to and acted upon. This is how my Father shows who he is—when you produce grapes, when you mature as my disciples. 9-10 “I’ve loved you the way my Father has loved me. Make yourselves at home in my love. If you keep my commands, you’ll remain intimately at home in my love. That’s what I’ve done—kept my Father’s commands and made myself at home in his love. 11-15 “I’ve told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you. This is the very best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends. You are my friends when you do the things I command you. I’m no longer calling you servants because servants don’t understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I’ve named you friends because I’ve let you in on everything I’ve heard from the Father.

16 “You didn’t choose me, remember; I chose you, and put you in the world to bear fruit, fruit that won’t spoil. As fruit bearers, whatever you ask the Father in relation to me, he gives you. 17 “But remember the root command: Love one another.

Benediction Written by Nathan Nettle (based on John 15:1-8, 1 John 4:7-21, https://re-worship.blogspot.com/2012/04/benediction-easter-5-b.html) Go now, and love one another, because love is from God. Proclaim God’s salvation to every generation. Remain in Jesus Christ, and like branches of a vine, draw your life from him. And may God the vine grower tend you and make you fruitful; May Christ Jesus abide in you and give you life; And may the Holy Spirit cast out all fear and fill you with God’s love. We go in peace to love and serve the Lord, Everyone: In the name of Christ. Amen.
