stewardship in ACTION STEWARDSHIP – A WAY OF LIFE! What you are is God’s gift to you - What you become is your gift to God.

Parishioner Judy craig, a Nurse Anesthetist, is the founder of the Solanus Medical Mission which serves the poorest of the poor in comayugua, Honduras. The Franciscan friars staff the Honduras hospital, St. Benedict Joseph Medical center, so Judy appropriately chose Father Solanus casey, an Irish Franciscan priest as their patron saint.

At their own expense, a 30-member medical brigade from throughout the United States serve the people at the St. Benedict Joseph Medical center. An average of 80 surgeries yearly are performed ranging from orthopedics to podiatry along with plastic surgery specifically needed for children with cleft palate. The Franciscan friars pray with the patients and administer the Sacraments to the patients, families and the medical team.

The people of Honduras are taught and trained to assist and prepare for procedures, how to sterilize instruments – and they pray with the patients.

One of the children, Luis, an infant born premature at just 1.5lbs, had a hearing loss and was unable to speak. Prayers, fundraising and the commitment of four members of the Solanus group brought Luis to the US for surgery and seven months of care. Luis, now 14 years old, can hear and speak because people cared enough to make a difference in the life of a child. Why did Judy step out in faith to recruit a medical team and why is she committed to organize each mission trip and give to the people in Honduras? Her response is one for all God’s people, “It makes me feel like I’m living the passage, ‘Whatever you do for the least of my brothers, so you do unto ME!’
