  • The Twelfth Day of Christmas

“The Twelve Days of Christmas” is a popular song most of us have heard many times before. Traditionally, the feast of Epiphany was the twelfth day after Christmas, or January 6.

Also, traditionally for many people, it marked the end of the Christmas season and

celebrations. On that day, many people would take down their Christmas decorations.

Christmas vacation would end for school children. People would prepare to enter the

bleakness of the long winter season. However, the celebration of Epiphany should really perk

us up and remind us of what we celebrated just two weeks ago.

What does the word Epiphany mean anyway? People of faith say it means, “Appearance

of Jesus as Messiah,” They way that it is the appearance of not just another person, but the

Messiah, as the one long awaited. It also means, in its more general sense, manifestation or

showing. Today we celebrate the event in which Jesus was shown to the non-Jewish world,

for the first time. The three wise men represent the Gentile world. A baby was born into the

world and the three astrologers went to see this baby. Certainly babies are born every day all

over the world, but there was something special about this baby. This infant was both human

and divine. This baby came into the world for the whole world. Each gift given by the wise

men is symbolic and tells us something about this newborn infant.

The gold symbolized the royalty of Jesus. It tells us that He will have a kingdom. This

kingdom will not be built on armies and palaces, but on love and peace. The frankincense

symbolizes adoration and prayer, as does incense today. When we pray to the Father, we ask

Jesus to bring Him our petitions. Our prayers rise like incense to the Lord. The myrrh

symbolizes the death and burial that one day will be a part of Jesus’ earthly experience.

May you have a Blessed and Happy New Year and may the Lord show you His love in

many wonderful ways during the coming year. May the star that guided the wise men continue to shine brightly so that we too may find Jesus and worship Him! Father David

Epiphany Home Blessing Card with Chalk Now Available at the Ministry Center

This weekend we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord. Praying an Epiphany Home Blessing and marking the lintel with chalk over the main entrance of the home is an ancient tradition that not only places God at the entrance of your home, it places your entire family under his protection.

Packets containing the prayer of blessing, along with a piece of chalk are now available for pickup at the Ministry Center during office hours. You are invited to take the Prayer of Blessing and the chalk to use it while invoking God’s blessing upon your home.

Resolutions come and resolutions go. The best thing is that we are not held back by just making a resolution and hoping we can stick to it. Our God is a God of 2nd chances. Each day offers us a new opportunity to start again, to be reconciled, and to show His Love to others. In this year of St. Joseph, let's all aim to work daily at our faith to make it stronger and be the support for each other.
