2  THE CONFESSION OF PETER

 Welcome to Worship at St. Paul’s!!

The community of believers at St. Paul Lutheran Church takes delight in having guests inits worship. Our congregation strives to present a witness to Christ that is faithful to the Word of

Holy Scripture and to the confessional heritage of the Lutheran tradition.

GUESTS:  We encourage you to sign a “visitor” card located in the pews and our Guest Booklocated in the hall outside the worship space.

HOLY COMMUNION IS OFFERED:  Access to the Lord’s Table is by invitation of the Lordhimself. All baptized believers who trust that Christ is presented in the celebration of the Holy

Eucharist are invited to come forward and receive Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. Communion isdistributed by coming up the center aisle at the direction of the usher and returning along the sideaisle. Those who do not wish to receive the Sacrament may come forward with their arms crossedand receive a blessing. Those who, for any reason, cannot receive the wine may receive theSacrament under the form of bread alone. In doing so, a communicant still receives the wholeChrist.

TO THE PARENTS OF YOUNG CHILDREN—Relax! God put the wiggle in children; don’t feel you have to suppress it in God’s house. All are welcome!

Sit toward the front where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what’s going on in worship. They tire of seeing the backs of others’ heads.

Quietly and kindly explain the parts of the Liturgy and actions of the worship leaders. Share the worship folder with them at eye level.

Sing the hymns, pray and voice the responses. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you.

If you have to leave worship with your child, feel free to do so, but please come back. Jesus said“Let the children come to me.”

Remember that the way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond to the

Church, to God, and to one another. Let them know that they are at home in this house of worship.

Please let your child use this worship folder to draw and doodle.

The presence of children is a gift to the Church. Please welcome children and give a smile ofencouragement to their families.

The PRAYER OF THE DAYLet us pray…the prayer concludes…one God, now and forever.

 Amen.

The assembly is seated.

LITURGY OF THE  W ORD The FIRST READING Acts 4:8–13Peter, though an uneducated fisherman, is given the gift of the Spirit enabling him to proclaim to the Jewish leaders that the crucified Jesus has become the risen Savior.

8Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people andelders, 9if we are questioned today because of a good deed done to someone who

 was sick and are asked how this man has been healed, 10let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in goodhealth by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom Godraised from the dead. 11This Jesus is

'the stone that was rejected by you, the builders;it has become the cornerstone.'

12There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven givenamong mortals by which we must be saved."

13

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed and recognized them ascompanions of Jesus.

8  THE CONFESSION OF PETER

The reading concludes:The Word of the Lord.Thanks be to God.

The PSALMODY Psalm 29 After introduction, the choir or cantor will sing the refrain once, then repeated by all. The assemblysings the refrain after each verse.

1I love you, O | LORD my strength,O LORD my stronghold, my crag, | and my haven;

2my God, my rock in whom I | put my trust,my shield, the horn of my salvation, | and my refuge. Refrain

3I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy | to be praised,and so shall I be saved | from my enemies.

4

The breakers of death rolled|

 over me,and the torrents of oblivion made | me afraid.

5The cords of Sheol en- | tangled me,and the snares of death were | set for me.

6I called upon the LORD in my distressand cried out to my | God for help.

From the heavens the LORD heard my voice;my cry | reached God's ears. Refrain

16 You reached down from on | high and grasped me; you drew me out | of great waters.

17 You delivered me from my strong enemiesand from those who | hated me,

for they were too might- | y for me.18

They confronted me in the day of|

 my disaster;but you, LORD, were | my support.19 You brought me out into an | open place;

 you rescued me because you delight- | ed in me. Refrain

The SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 10:1–5In this part of the letter, Paul is establishing a comparison between the events following the exodus

 from Egypt and the Christian church. Passing through the sea equates to baptism, manna and water from the rock to the eucharist. Jesus, then, is the new Moses.

THE CONFESSION OF PETER   9

I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were allunder the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2and all were baptized into Mosesin the cloud and in the sea, 3and all ate the same spiritual food, 4and all drank thesame spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them,and the rock was Christ. 5Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them,and they were struck down in the wilderness.

The reading concludes:

The Word of the Lord.Thanks be to God.

The assembly stands to welcome the Gospel as it is proclaimed in the midst of the assembly.

The GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

The HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 16:13–19 Jesus had been teaching, healing, working miracles, and generating opposition. But did his closest followers understand who he was? Peter, under the guidance of the Spirit, spoke his great confession

of faith, one that continues to define our understanding of Christ.The Lord be with you.

 And also with you. The Holy +1 Gospel according to Matthew.Glory to you, O Lord.

13Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples,

"Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" 14 And they said, "Some say John theBaptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." 15Hesaid to them, "But who do you say that I am?" 16Simon Peter answered, "You arethe Messiah, the Son of the living God." 17 And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are

 you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but myFather in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my

THE CONFESSION OF PETER   11

The NICENE CREED With the whole people of God, let us confess our faith. We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,maker of heaven and earth,of all that is, seen and unseen.6

 We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light,true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father.Through him all things were made.For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven;

by the power of the Holy Spirithe became incarnate2 from the virgin Mary, and wasmade man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried.On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,and his kingdom will have no end.

 We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

 With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.He has spoken through the prophets.

 We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen

2 Martin Luther, in his Commentary on the Gospel of John encouraged the continuation of the ancient tradition of bowing during this

 portion of the Creed until “For our sake…” because “the Divine Majesty abased Himself and became like us poor bags of worms, and

to thank God for the ineffable mercy and compassion reflected in the incarnation.” (Luther’s Works, Vol. 22, pp. 102, 105)
