Before Mass
If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the
Church entrance (narthex).
As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship.
In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times.
Wireless hearing amplifiers are available.
Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the
church on the opposite side to the entrance.
Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the
service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church.
The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make
an appointment.
The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the
Mass.
The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to
those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also
customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus.
You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and
prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins.
We adore you,
most Holy Lord Jesus Christ
here and in all your churches throughout all the world;
and we bless you because
by your Holy Cross
you have redeemed the world.

A Reflection on Today’s First Reading from Zephaniah
Commentary on Zephaniah 3:14-15
CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA: As far as the deeper meaning of the passage is concerned, it clearly
commands Jerusalem to rejoice exceedingly, to be especially glad, to cheer up wholeheartedly as its
trespasses are wiped out, evidently through Christ. The spiritual and holy Zion - that is, the church,
the holy multitude of the believers - is justified in Christ and only in him. By him and through him we
are also saved as we escape from the harm of the invisible enemies, for we have a Mediator who was
incarnated in our form, the king of all, that is, the Word of God the Father. Thanks to him, we do not
see evil anymore, for we have been delivered from the powers of evil. He [the Word] is the armor of
good will, the peace, the wall, the one who bestows incorruption, the arbiter of the crowns, who shut
down the war of the incorporeal Assyrians and made void the schemes of the demons.
Commentary on Zephaniah 3:16-18
THEODORET OF CYR: I am aware that some commentators understood this [text to apply to] the
return from Babylon and the renovation of Jerusalem, and I do not contradict their words: the
prophecy applies also to what happened at that time. But you can find a more exact outcome after the
incarnation of our Savior: then it was that he healed the oppressed in heart in the washing of
regeneration; then it was that he renewed human nature, loving us so much as to give his life for us.
After all, "greater love than this no one can show than for one to lay down one's life for one's friend"
and again, "God so loved the world as to give his only begotten Son so that everyone believing in him
might not be lost but have eternal life (Jn 15:13, 3:16).”
Commentary on Zephaniah 3:19-20
THEODORET OF CYR: The salvation of human beings rests with divine lovingkindness alone: we do
not earn it as the wages of righteousness; rather, it is a gift of divine goodness. Hence the Lord says,
“on your behalf I shall save and welcome” and make my own what has become another’s, render it
conspicuous, make it more famous than all others, free it from its former shame, and from being
captives and slaves I shall make them free people and my own. Now, as I have said, this he both
made a gift of to those returning from Babylon at that time and also granted to all people later. We
who were once in thrall to the devil but are now freed from that harsh captivity and unmindful of the
error of polytheism have become God’s own, being famous beyond pagans and barbarians, according
to the prophecy, and we who were, once far off have become near, according to the divine apostle.

The Liturgy of the Word
THE OLD TESTAMENT READING Be seated
Reader A reading from the Book of Zephaniah.
Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O
daughter Jerusalem! The Lord has taken away the judgements against you, he has turned
away your enemies. The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster
no more. On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your
hands grow weak. The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he
will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you
with loud singing as on a day of festival. I will remove disaster from you, so that you will
not bear reproach for it. I will deal with all your oppressors at that time. And I will save
the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in
all the earth. At that time I will bring you home, at the time when I gather you; for I will
make you renowned and praised among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your
fortunes before your eyes, says the Lord. Zephaniah 3:14-20
Reader The word of the Lord.
lllAll Thanks be to God.
CANTICLE A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.
Surely, it is God who saves me; I will trust in him and not be afraid. For the Lord is my
stronghold and my sure defence, and he will be my Saviour. Antiphon
Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation. And on that
day you shall say, Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his name; make his deeds
known among the peoples; see that they remember that his name is exalted. Antiphon

John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers!
Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do
not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God is
able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the
root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and
thrown into the fire." And the crowds asked him, "What then should we do?" In reply he
said to them, "Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and
whoever has food must do likewise." Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they
asked him, "Teacher, what should we do?" He said to them, "Collect no more than the
amount prescribed for you." Soldiers also asked him, "And we, what should we do?" He
said to them, "Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be
satisfied with your wages." As the people were filled with expectation, and all were
questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John
answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful
than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you
with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing
floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with
unquenchable fire." So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to
the people. Luke 3:7-18

THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Kneel
Celebrant Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly
Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our
nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption;
who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and
sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did
institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that
his precious death, until his coming again.
Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we
receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus
Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of
his most blessed body and blood;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks,
he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given
for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” +
Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them,
saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for
you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in
remembrance of me.” +
Wherefore, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, we thy humble servants with all thy
holy Church, remembering the precious death of thy beloved Son, his mighty
resurrection, and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again in glory, do
make before thee, in this sacrament of the holy bread of eternal life and the cup of
everlasting salvation, the memorial which he hath commanded:
lllAll We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God.
Celebrant And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of
praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and
death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole
Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we
pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy
communion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus
Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour
and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end.
lllAll Amen.

Music of Advent Series
Advent is a season that regghhflects upon and hopes for the final coming of Christ.
This series focuses on the music of the Advent season. The musical tradition
helps build the anticipation of the faithful and expresses their deepest longings
for the second advent of Jesus. Simultaneously we look toward the celebration of
the Incarnation, or the first advent. This year, Old Testament readings from the
Mass come from the prophets. In our first talk, we examine the prophetic texts
that inform Advent hymns. In the second, Bishop Michael will present a session
further exploring the music of Advent. In the third week, we will explore the
“Advent Prose” which is a moving text sung by the choir. This compilation of
texts from the prophet Isaiah consists of lyrical laments which ask God to
remember his people. It concludes with words of God’s comfort. The last session
will treat the “O” antiphons. This series of seven pleas (e.g. “O Come, O Come
Emmanuel”) is prayed from December 16th to the 23rd. Thus we explore how the
music of Advent supports the liturgy of the season.

NEW EXECUTIVE ARCHDEACON FOR
THE DIOCESE APPOINTED
The Rev. Douglas Fenton to succeed the
Venerable Ronald Harrison January 1st, 2013.
On Thursday afternoon, December 6th, 2012,
Bishop Michael Ingham announced to Synod Staff
that he has appointed current diocesan Director
for Mission and Ministry, Rev. Douglas Fenton,
Executive Archdeacon of the Diocese. Douglas
will succeed the Ven. Ronald Harrison who retires
on December 31st, 2012.
Since March of 2011, Douglas has given oversight
to the Ministry Assessment Process(MAP),
provided staff support for diocesan ministry and
mission planning initiatives through all the
instruments of the diocese, been staff support on
numerous diocesan committees and working
groups, and has been instrumental in developing
new and exciting programs such as the Diocesan
School for Leadership.
Prior to March of 2011, Douglas was for nine
years in the national office of The Episcopal
Church in New York City finishing out his
ministry February 28th, 2011, as Officer for Young
Adult and Campus Ministries. Prior to 2002,
Douglas served here in the Diocese of New
Westminster, at St. Catherine, Port Coquitlam and
St James. He was also the Chair of Interim
Ministry.
In his December 6th announcement Bishop
Michael told staff that it takes three people to do
the job of "bishop," the Bishop, the Administrative
Assistant to the bishop (currently the Rev. Eileen
Nurse) and the Executive Archdeacon.
Congratulations and best wishes to Douglas and
please keep him in your thoughts and prayers as
he embarks on this new phase of ministry.
NO EFM MEETINGS IN DECEMBER
The next meeting will be on Thursday, January
10th.
