ANNOUNCEMENTS

International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) celebrated one of the biggest

successes in the history of the organization when the EU came to an agreement on a version of

the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which included a specific reference to the

Holocaust in the recitals IHRA began its campaign to ensure that documents bearing on the

Holocaust would explicitly not be affected by the GDPR following concerns from IHRA experts

that archives were using the Regulation as a pretext to block access to archival materials

Recital 125b of the GDPR now reads

Member States should also be authorised to provide that personal data may be further processed

for archiving purposes for example with a view to providing specific information related to the

political behaviour under former totalitarian state regimes genocide crimes against humanity in

particular the Holocaust or war crimes Read more here

FYIhellip Yad Vashems exhibition Art from the Holocaust 100 Works from the Yad Vashem

Collection was inaugurated by Chancellor Angela Merkel at the German Historical Museum in

Berlin on January 25 2016 The exhibition includes artwork from 50 artists all but one of whom

were Jewish 24 of whom were murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators Despite the


appalling conditions in which they found themselves and the daily struggle to survive the artists

overcame the paucity of materials with inventiveness and through their creativity reasserted

their individuality and their will to live In portraying their brethren the Jewish artists were able

to commemorate them for future generations thus defying the Nazis process of dehumanization

and annihilation Beyond the variety of approaches the different styles and the multiplicity of

themes evoked all the artworks testify to the power of the human spirit that refused to surrender

Righteous Among the Nations Event in DC included Recognition of Americans

On January 27 2016 International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the

Holocaust a unique ceremony honoring Righteous among the Nations was held at the Israeli

Embassy in Washington DC The event marked the first time that a ceremony presenting

medals and certificates of honor to American Righteous Among the Nations was held in the

United States Americans Roddie Edmonds and Lois Gunden and Polish citizens Walery and

Maryla Zbijewski were recognized for risking their lives to rescue Jews during the Holocaust

The medals and certificates of honor were accepted on the Righteousrsquo behalf by their next of kin

Holocaust survivors who were rescued by the Righteous were present at the event as well as

President Obama Israelrsquos Ambassador to the US Ron Dermer Rabbi Israel Meir Lau Chairman

of the Yad Vashem Council and Leonard Wilf Chair of the American Society for Yad Vashem

ANNOUNCEMENTS

International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) celebrated one of the biggest

successes in the history of the organization when the EU came to an agreement on a version of

the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which included a specific reference to the

Holocaust in the recitals IHRA began its campaign to ensure that documents bearing on the

Holocaust would explicitly not be affected by the GDPR following concerns from IHRA experts

that archives were using the Regulation as a pretext to block access to archival materials

Recital 125b of the GDPR now reads

Member States should also be authorised to provide that personal data may be further processed

for archiving purposes for example with a view to providing specific information related to the

political behaviour under former totalitarian state regimes genocide crimes against humanity in

particular the Holocaust or war crimes Read more here
