Pastor’s Perspective Those of us who have been in church all our lives can sometimes get too comfort-

able with our faith. We’ve read some of the more familiar stories in the Bible so many times they’ve lost their “wow” factor. I wonder how David really felt when he went out to do battle with Goliath. Or Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego when they told the king they weren’t going to bow down to his idol. Or Daniel when he was thrown into a den of hungry lions because he would not stop praying to his God. Or Esther when she knew she was risking her life by approaching the king unsummoned. Their circumstances were all unique. But what they all had in common was faith in God. A God who has always proven Himself faithful to His people. Joshua declared this very truth after God’s people had completed their conquest of the Promised Land and shortly before he died. He said, “Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed.”

This Sunday I will preach on what must have been one of the greatest, most ex-hilarating experiences of God’s people in the Bible. The crossing of the Jordan River. After 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, they were finally going to take pos-session of the land God had promised their ancestors, all the way back to Abraham. We’ve heard the story so many times, we fail to feel the power and excitement of the moment. God was fulfilling a promise. A big promise. One that only He could fulfill. But the real beauty of this story in the Old Testament is what it foreshadows in the New Testament. “The Day” is what the Bible calls it. The day Jesus returns to this earth and takes all of us who have placed our faith in Him home to live with Him forever. The real and eternal Promised Land.

Last week was one of the more stressful I have experienced in a long time. The demands of ministry were pulling me in different directions even as I welcomed my son home from Afghanistan for his 2-week R&R and we welcomed a new grandson into the family. I rarely feel so overwhelmed. But I am keenly aware that we all have similar seasons in life and it is always good to remember this world is not our home. The trials of this life will soon be over and will pale in comparison to the future God has in store for us. We are bound for the Promised Land!

See you Sunday! ~ John
