Prepare your vehicle for BC’s winter driving conditionsBy Kent Magnuson
GENERAL SALES MANAGER, METRO FORD
It has been reported by the 2010 Old Farmer’sAlmanac that this winter will be a cold andsnowy one. With snow already on the groundacross many areas of British Columbia, it’sexpected that hyper cold weather will continueto hit Port Coquitlam until mid-February,which could mean even more snow – and lotsof it.
Drivers need to be aware of the conditionsthey face over the next several months andensure proper vehicle preparation. In B.C.,this involves taking into account that it’s notenough to know how to drive in snow – we needto safely navigate through wet snow.
Here are five do-it-yourself tips to prepareyour vehicle for wet snow driving:1. Check your tire tread
The standard “penny test” for tire tread –dipping Queen Elizabeth’s head into one of thegrooves on the tread and verifying that at leastsome of her hair is covered by the tread – thisis a minimum standard for winter driving. Youwill need more tread for driving through wetsnow and ice, so use this standard as a basis.2. Check your tire pressure
Tire pressure decreases with fallingtemperature, and it’s important to check allfour tires regularly and keep them at thepressures recommended in your owner’s guideor listed on the driver’s door edge sticker. Usea quality gauge and never reduce tire pressurefor “extra traction” on snow or ice.3. Clear slush
Wet snow creates slushy roads and this slushcan build up on headlights and in wheel wells, which can impair your ability to see and steer.
Before getting into your vehicle, clear slushfrom headlights and each of the four wheelwells.4. Check your cooling system
You can purchase a tester to measure yourvehicle’s cooling system. Make sure thatcoolant contains an adequate 50/50 antifreeze/water mixture. Freezing coolant can ruin anengine.5. Check your window washer fluid
Ensure your windshield-washer reservoiris topped-off with a cold-weather washerfluid. Slush splashed on a windshield can bedangerous if your vehicle’s washer reservoir isnot adequately full.
These five do-it-yourself wet snow drivingtips will help ensure your vehicle is as preparedas possible for winter driving conditions.Making an appointment at an authorizeddealer is also recommended to check that yourvehicle’s performance is at its best. Becomingstranded due to a clogged fuel filter, a brokenfan belt or defective ignition wiring is morethan a hassle in the winter, especially if help isfar away.
Any driver that wants to maintain safedriving practices should also invest insnow tires. Both Transport Canada and theInsurance Corporation of British Columbia(ICBC) recommend that four snow tires beinstalled on your car. Winter tires are madefrom compounds that better retain theirflexibility at temperatures below seven degreesCelsius. They also deliver improved handlingand stopping distances 23 per cent shorter thanall-season tires when travelling at speeds of 50km per hour.

It doesn’t feel like Christmas when your kids are hungry.
For many of us, the holiday season is filled with cheer. It’s a chance to spend time with family and friends and to enjoy life. And that’s a wonderful thing.
Unfortunately for many in our community, there are daily challenges to face; including getting enough to eat.
In the current economic times, there are more and more people who can’t make ends meet. They are the person who sits on the bus beside you each morning or the one who smiles and holds the door open for you as you enter a building. They are the man on the street holding a sign that says: “looking for work” or the woman in the local park whose child plays with yours on the swing. They are our friends and neighbours. They are our community.
In these tough economic times, more people to turn to the food bank. The SHARE Food Bank needs your support more than ever. Right now, they are providing approximately 1000 families with food relief every two weeks. An incredible 45% of recipients are children. Even with the generosity of the community, the SHARE Food Bank can’t keep up with the growing demand.
The current demand is overwhelming and the SHARE Food Bank needs your help more than ever. No child should ever go hungry.
At this festive time of year, we are asking you to think of others in our community. Every donation matters—from the small to the large. Please open your hearts—and your wallets—and help the SHARE Food Bank to help those in need. It may be the best present you’ve ever given.
Let’s make it feel like Christmas for everyone.Call now 604.540.9161 with your donation.

Dreaming of a White Christmas? Consider a ‘Green’ One Instead
Christmas is a holidayfull of joy and celebration. It can also be a time ofconsumption and stresson the environment. However, holidayshoppers and celebrantscan easily reduce theircarbon footprint thisholiday season.
During a season inwhich more is often more,it can be a challenge tocut back in an effort toprotect the planet. Butscaling back gifts, foodconsumption and travelcan be effective ways to gogreen this holiday season.
• Buy fewer gifts.Christmas gifts showothers how much they arecared about. Some giftsare given out of necessity.Others are more of asentimental statement. It’s easy to express howmuch you care withoutoverdoing it. Set a limit onthe number of gifts eachrecipient gets.
• Organize a “SecretSanta.” An easy wayto cut down on giftspurchased is to organizea Secret Santa or holidaygrab bag. This means thateach participating persononly has to purchase onegift.
• Be smart aboutwrapping. Chances arethere are plenty of itemsaround the house thatcan be recycled into giftwrapping for presents.Foil, newspaper, comics, magazines, and evenbrown mailing paper areall good ideas. For thoseinterested in really goinggreen, skip the wrappingall together.
• It’s okay to makegifts. Handmade giftsare thoughtful and canbe cherished for years.Individuals who knowhow to knit or crochet canhandcraft scarves or hats.Make a photo album withscrapbooking supplies.Individuals who are
handy in the kitchen maywant to give baked goods.
• Choose battery-freegifts. Discarded batteriesare a plague on theenvironment. Accordingto the EnvironmentalProtection Agency, about40 percent of all batterysales occur duringthe holiday season. Ifbatteries can’t be avoided, choose ones that can berecharged.
• Use LED holidaylights. Keeping lights onfor hours on end certainlyuses a lot of electricity.Limit the drain on energyby selecting lights thathave the least impact.LEDs use less powerand last longer thantraditional bulbs. Whenpossible, consider the useof solar-powered holidaylights. Plus, don’t leavethe lights on when no oneis home or the householdhas gone to sleep.
• Decorate a live tree.
Christmas tree farmsare in the business ofregularly planting andharvesting evergreentrees. That makeslive trees a renewableresource instead ofplastic trees made frompetroleum. What’smore, after the seasonChristmas trees can beturned into mulch.
• Send recycled cards ore-cards. Choose materialsaround the house that canbe turned into Christmascards for those that youdo send. Also, recycle lastyear’s cards into tags forgifts.
• Recycle leftovermaterials. Chances arelarge gifts will haveenough wrapping paperremaining to wrap othergifts next year. Avoidmetallic paper, which ismore difficult to recycle.Be sure to break down allcardboard and paper sothat it can be put out forrecycling.
Reducing the use of gift wrapping or recycling previously usedpaper are green ways to celebrate the holiday.

No matter what time of year, especiallyat Christmas time, women love to give and receive jewelry. Spinola Bay carries severallines, but we are most proud to carry whatwe believe to be the top three lines in Canadaat this time – Pandora, Thomas Sabo andPyrrha jewelry.
Each designer offers a wide variety of charm bracelets and necklaces that are hoton the Tri-City market for the holiday season.
The designers of Pyrrha Jewelry arehandcrafting their pieces right here inVancouver with authentic 19th century waxseals. This craftsmanship was inspired bythe designer’s desire to give the fragile waxseals new life and permanence.
Pandora’s mission is to offer women acrossthe world a universe of modern, high quality,hand-finished and genuine jewelry productsat affordable prices, thereby inspiringwomen to express their individuality. Theybelieve all women have their individualstories to tell – a personal collection ofspecial moments that makes them who theyare. That is why we celebrate these moments.
Thomas Sabo loves fashion and his jewelryis simply inspired by every day life. Thedesigners at Thomas Sabo believe jewelryis a way of playing with personality andexpressing yourself. This passion for life isadmirably reflected in their collection.
All three lines have people lining up to seethe new collections every season, and thisholiday is no different. Clients are happy to
know that the recipient of their purchasewill be ecstatic to receive a piece of jewelryfrom Spinola Bay. For as little as $29 they
can feel confidentthat their “specialsomeone” will be justas happy receivingtheir gift as they werepurchasing it.

Don’t Let Christmas Dinner Be a Budget-Buster Many people worry about the expenses
of the holidays. Individuals who are alreadypinching pennies and putting as muchtoward gifts as possible may want to keepholiday entertaining costs low. It’s possibleto do so without sacrificing quality.
Christmas dinner is something familieslook forward to each year. Some enjoy aroasted turkey; others turn to cultural foods.Others may eat a big meal both on ChristmasEve and Christmas Day. The hosts andhostesses who serve Christmas dinner oftenopen their homes up to a number of gueststo enjoy the meal. It’s not uncommon to find10 to 12 friends or family members gatheredaround the dining table -- and feeding allthose people can get expensive.
One can expect to spend a hundred dollarsor more on holiday foods depending on themenu items chosen; a large turkey alone cancost $25. If cocktails are part of the holidayequation, premium alcohol can run $20 to$30 per bottle. If finances are tight, a bigChristmas dinner can certainly put a strainon the budget. To cut costs, consider thesefrugal tips.
• Shop the sales. Plan the menu in advanceand comparison shop the non-perishableitems. Stock up on the foods needed that canbe stored in the pantry until preparationtime. The closer a person shops toChristmas, the higher the prices on certainitems may be.
• Choose lower-priced foods. Who says filetmignon has to be served on Christmas? Aslong as the food is tasty, guests will enjoyit. Consider menu items that can be boughtin bulk (less expensive) and turned into
delicious meals. A platter of chicken withlemon-butter sauce could win rave reviewsover the tired turkey anyway.
• Don’t overdo it. Party hosts often over-buy food thinking there will not be enough. After crackers and cheese, salad, appetizers, and some other courses, guests may bestuffed to the gills and only pick at the mainmeal. Scale back the courses and focus onone or two things.
• Fill guests up with vegetables. Starches, such as potatoes and rice, and manyvegetables are inexpensive and filling. Servea higher ratio of these foods to meats andpoultry.
• Have a holiday pot luck. Hosts can askguests to bring one food item with them tolessen the financial burden. Friends andfamily will be more than happy to pitch in.
• Consider store brands. Many store brandfoods are equal in taste and quality to thebrand name items ... but at lower costs. Thisis because store brands are not advertisedand don’t have to pay for publicity. This canhelp budget-conscious shoppers save a littleat the check-out.
• Avoid pre-made foods. Conveniencefoods, like frozen appetizers or dips, oftencost more per serving than if they are madeat home from scratch. Scratch-cookingtakes a little more time, but it is often moreeconomical.
• Skip the meal, altogether. If conversationand mingling are more the speed of thegathering, host a cocktail party instead.Serve finger foods and one or two signaturedrinks. Less time around the table meansmore moments for merrymaking anyway.
