This music season walk into any sabha, you can come across atleast one veena concert a

day. Considered a divine instrument, lets get toknow what it is all about.It is a stringed instrument. It consists of a large

body hollowed out of a block of wood. The stem of the instrument is also made of wood. The bridge is placed on the fl at top of the body of the veena and the neck attached to the stem is usually carved into weird fi gure like the head of the dragon. A gourd which is smaller than the rounded part of the body is fi xed underneath the neck.

Twenty one metallic frets are fi xed on the stem by means of a resinous sub-stance. The veena has seven strings. Of them four are main strings

that pass over the frets and are

attached to the

neck. The other strings are used as side strings for rhythmic accom-paniment. These strings pass over

an arched bridge made of brass. They lie fl at over the top of the body and are

secured to the main bridge. The veena is played by sitting cross-legged upon the fl oor and holding the veena in front. The main body of the instrument is placed on the ground, partially supported by the right thigh. There are different varieties of veena. Some of them are Mahanataka veena, Saraswati veena, Rudra veena, Vichitra veena etc.

Saraswati veena is known as the queen of veenas.

Venkat Prabhu’s directorial Party is all set for release in February. The movie stars Jai,

Shaam, Shiva, Sathyaraj, Ramya Krishnan, Regina Cassandra, Nivetha Pethuraj and Sanchita Shetty among others. Sathyaraj plays a pivotal role. Pro-duced by T Siva of Amma Creations, the fi lm has cinematography by Rajesh Yadav and editing by KL Praveen. Music is by Premgi Amaran. Actors Suriya and Karthi have sung a peppy number in the movie. Venkat Prabhu will soon commence work on his next project with Simbu titled Maanadu.

Actor Arjun plays a meaty role in Kolaigaran. Directed

by Andrew Louis of Leelai fame, Vijay Antony is also in the cast. International beauty pageant-winner Ashima Narwal forays into Tamil cinema with this fi lm.

Arjun recently completed his shooting portions in the city.

‘It is not the usual hero-villain story. It’s a city-based fl ick and ei-ther of them could be kolaigaran,’ Andrew said. Arjun completed his shooting portions for the fi lm. The movie is produced by B Pradeep.

Sathya NJ, the popular costume designer in Kol-

lywood, has won laurels for his performance in a key role in Arunraja Kamaraj’s Kanaa based on women cricket.

‘I know Arunraja Kamaraj for a longtime and we became friends through cricket. While he was a fast bowler, I used to be wicketkeeper during the matches. My long-term dream is to play in Celebrity Cricket

League. One of the conditions to be part of it is that the ac-tor should have performed in at least seven movies. When I heard that Arunraja is mak-ing his debut with Kanaa, I approached him and he gladly agreed and asked me to attend the rehearsals. I was given a chance and I played the wick-etkeeper in the fi lm as well,’ he said.

Sathya also thanked Si-vakarthikeyan for giving a full-length role in Kanaa.
