THE NATURAL LAW AS A SOLUTION TO MORAL CHAOS
In the last few bulletins I lamented the decline of a generally accepted system of ethics in American society in the last half century which helped to shape debates over moral issues. I argued that the majority of people in our country used to agree on the general principles of Judeo-Christian ethics. Even if there was disagreement on specific issues, the norms based on the teaching of the Bible were accepted by almost everyone, even by nonbelievers. Any argument for or against a particular position had to take the Judeo-Christian ethic as a reference. And so everyone believed that a man should earn his own living, that marriage is an exclusive union of a man and a woman which should last until one of them dies, and that human life should be protected against murder; etc. With the turn away from religion, led and sometimes encouraged by the builders of popular culture – Hollywood, the media, college professors, leaders in the professions and industry, among others – the moral consensus which existed in American society was lost.
The Judeo-Christian ethic had to be replaced by something else. Human beings do not make moral decisions in a vacuum. They refer, often unconsciously, to their deep-seated convictions about certain principles. For example, a couple moves in together before marriage. They may deny it, but their decision reflects a conviction that sex should not be confined only to marriage, or that saving money is more important than being chaste, or that immediate gratification is better than self-denial. Their devaluation of the sanctity of sex and marriage cause them to make a decision which is contrary to traditional American values. On the other hand, the couple that makes the decision to remain apart until they marry put a high value on chastity and have a greater respect for the uniqueness of marriage. In the case of both couples, there are underlying principles in their belief system which determine their concrete choice.
So if Christians want to live in a society which upholds traditional moral values, how do they
convince nonbelievers to accept them? They cannot quote the Bible or the Church, since their interlocutors do not accept their authority. Clearly, the challenge is great, not least because relatively few people are willing to engage in serious thinking today, as I wrote last week. But if you get someone who will listen, the best way to bring them to make the best moral choices may be to convince them of first principles. They need to be shown that there is such a thing as natural law.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “Man participates in the wisdom and
goodness of the Creator who gives him mastery over his acts and the ability to govern himself with a view to the true and the good. The natural law expresses the original moral sense which enables man to discern by reason the good and the evil, the truth and the lie” (#1954, emphasis added). The Church is convinced that human beings are born with a sense of right and wrong, with a law written on their hearts which can be discovered by the use of reason. Some pagan thinkers have thought the same. For example, the Roman philosopher Cicero, who wrote around 50 B.C.: “For there is a true law; right reason. It is in conformity with nature, it is diffused among all men, and is immutable and eternal; its orders summon to duty; its prohibitions turn away from offense.”
Whether or not they believe in God, most people will agree that it is wrong to steal, to kill the
innocent, or to dishonor your mother and father. These truths are written in the hearts of human beings and require little explanation. It might be useful to demonstrate that there is something like a natural law, and that by living in accord with it human beings will have the best chance to reach their potential. A renewed acceptance of the existence of a natural law may be just what we need to save our society from its current moral chaos.

Live the Liturgy What can I do to accomplish the works of God? This is a question every Christian must ask. Ultimately, we are asked to be the light of Christ for others. This calls us to be compassionate, forgiving, nonviolent, generous, concerned for the poor, and welcoming to strangers. These are often contrary to what the world values. We are asked to simplify our lives and become less self-focused so that others can share in God’s creation. We need help in order to fulfill this tall order. The Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Christ, which we celebrate today, is the way we are nourished so that we can fulfill this mission.

Special Note Due to the shortage of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion during the summer months, beginning July 8th through September 2nd we will only be offering the Pre-cious Blood at the 4:30 pm Saturday Vigil and at the 10 am Sunday Mass. Beginning September 9th, the distribution of the Precious Blood will resume at all weekend Mass-es if we have enough ministers.
As a reminder, the entire Christ is present in Holy Communion under the form of bread and under the form of wine. There is no increase in grace to the communicant when he or she receives under both species. However, the offering of the Precious Blood to the lay faithful more fully signifies the reception of the Body and Blood of Christ. The imagery of being joined to the offering of Christ at the Last Supper is most evident when both species are received in Holy Communion.

The 2018 Annual Parish Appeal is underway. Our goal is $150,000. In the first nine months of the 2018 Appeal three hundred and thirteen families have pledged more than $126,200 of which $115,017 has been received. The Appeal is sup-porting continuing operations of the Parish while helping us fund a few necessary projects. These include an upgrade of the HVAC system in the Church and Parish Life Center, improvement of the church sound system, including hearing assist devices, and improved use of elec-tronic media in support of parish communications. Please complete the Intention Card you received in your letter from Father Scott and place it in the envelope in the collec-tion basket or mail the envelope to the Parish Office. Or, you may use the Parish Appeal envelope from your packet of envelopes to make your donation. The Finance Council and Father Scott thank you for your generosity.
We are very pleased that our E-giving over the past six months has increased. We also are pleased that our average collection amount per envelope & E-giving has also in-creased. Thank you for responding to our needs. We have reduced our budgeted expenses for the new 2018 – 2019 fiscal year by more than $28,000. Our beloved church with the associated facilities is 16 years old. As in your home, maintenance costs and operating costs need to be addressed. You have demon-strated your generosity to enable us to fulfill our fiscal responsibilities. Please continue to be as generous as you can.

Blessing and Investiture in the Brown Scapular

8th Grade Student Reflections
Azeneth Sedano Assumption BVM School taught me to get closer to God and pray more often, spending time with Him. I thank God for the opportunity to attend such an amazing school. Azeneth will be attending Avon Grove High School in the fall. Sean Semmel Preparation is a hard thing to accomplish, but Assumption BVM School does it and does it well! If you attend Assumption BVM School, you will be prepared spiritually, academically, and emotionally so you will be set for whatever may come your way. Sean will be attending The Salesianum School in the fall. Talia Staso Assumption BVM School is very special to me because I have attended since Kindergarten. We are like one big family and I will miss the school as well as my friends when I graduate. Talia will be attending Bishop Shanahan High School in the fall.

This week we will have Chris Massaro, a seminarian from St Charles Borromeo Seminary, lead us through what the Catholic Church teaches about saints. What is the Communion of Saints? ST. CLARE OF ASSISI
As a girl in 12th century Italy, Clare heard
the legendary St. Francis preaching in
the square below her family home. In-
spired, Clare snuck away in the middle of
the night to join Francis and his follow-
ers. Francis cut her hair like the men and
gave her a rough tunic and veil to wear.
For the sake of propriety, Clare was
placed in a Benedictine nun monastery
for several years. As more women were
drawn to the simple spirituality, a new
order was founded, now known as the
Poor Clares. Despite requests from the
pope himself to relax their vow of pov-
erty, Clare stood firm in following the
spirit of St. Francis. Clare’s reputation
for virtue spread and attracted women
— rich and poor alike — to the new order
that still exists today.

Sweepstakes Prizes Game cards have 17 chances to win a prize. A new chance in each of the 17 weeks of the sweepstakes! Every week, the 16 highest scoring game cards, and the 3 lowest scoring cards, all win prizes.
