WHO WOULD LIKE AN INVITATION?

Here's your chance! A wonderful opportunity to invite others to an informal outdoor worship, potluck and games at Riverside Park on August 26th (Full details are on the front page.)

The church council is together reading the book Unbinding the Gospel. This past council meeting we discussed a chapter which includes some interesting stories about extending an invitation - and not extending one. One story is from a church treasurer and CPA who said, "It's hard for me to be outgoing or really friendly like some people, so what I do is to pray that God will show me people to pray for who might be open to Christ now. When I ask, God brings people to my mind, or into my life, whose kids left for college a couple of months before. Sometimes it's someone who just retired, or a lady whose husband just died, or someone who lost his job. When their names come to my mind, I call them for lunch and then I ask them if they want to come to church. I don't talk about a lot of stuff, but I invite them." *(pg 78-79) In the margin of this story, I wrote, "Wow!" Praying for God to bring people to mind to invite to church is powerful!

Another story is about a woman who was looking for a church during a tough time. "She talked with friends about what was going on in her life. After a while she decided to try a church. One Sunday morning, she walked into a congregation close to her house. She was shocked to find that five of her friends and coworkers were sitting in the sanctuary. She had discussed her problems with most of these people! Not one of them suggested that church might help. Even worse, she had no idea that any of them were even members of a church. She didn't know they were Christians." *(pg 77).

As Christians, we know the power of Jesus to bring new life, to transform, to renew. This is news too good to keep to ourselves! Invite someone that God brings to your mind to join us in worship this week, or at the outdoor worship August 26th. Be bold. Pray for someone to come to know Jesus - through your invitation.

PLEASE HELP FILL OUR LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF SCHOOL KITS! We will be gathering items for School Kits during July and August and assembling them on “God’s Work. Our Hands.” Sunday (Sept. 16). School sales have started so please add some of these needed items to your shopping lists and put them in the marked container in our narthex. The Noisy Offerings during July and August will also go toward needed items to complete the bags and shipping costs ($1.40 each bag.) Why school supplies? To the children who receive School Kits, these supplies sometimes mean the difference between getting an education or not. Public school is usually free, but in the places where LWR works, even a few required supplies, like pens and paper, may be more than many families

can afford. And when parents can only afford to send one of their children to school, girls rarely get priority…yet the education level of mothers has the biggest impact on development. Please do not donate items with any religious symbols, a U.S. flag, patriotic or military symbols, or references to the armed forces, including camouflage. All items should be new and in good condition. Each School Kit needs:

Four 70-sheet notebooks of wide- or college-ruled paper approximately 8” X 10½”; no loose-leaf paper One 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other One pencil sharpener One blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well) Five unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers Five black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink); One box of 16 or 24 crayons One 2½” eraser

Our goal is 52 bags—one for each year of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Please help fill our bags and be a part of this ministry. Thank you!!!

DRINKING FROM THE WELL is a new program of spiritual formation for adults, offering teaching and prayer practices to help open them to receive the fullness of life in Christ and the richness of God’s mercy—right here, right now! Information about the program and the process of registration can be found at www.seekingthespirit.org. You may also contact Deacon Connie Stover at 308-440-4450 or [email protected]. Registration will remain open until August 17.
