Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of Aug. 22-23

In today’s Gospel, we hear that a number of Jesus’ followers left

him because his message was too difficult for them to accept. In

essence, they did not believe in him. He then asked the Twelve if

they wished to leave as well. Peter responds by making a profound

profession of faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior. The Twelve made a

choice and stood by their choice, remaining loyal to their commit-

ment to Jesus. A good question for our reflection might be this:

Are we satisfied with the stewardship we exercise over our baptis-

mal commitment? Are we just “along for the ride?” Are we keeping

Christ in front of us as we make decisions about our daily activi-

ties, our relationships, our parish, issues in the workplace, issues

such as peace and justice? What is the quality of our stewardship?

In 2015-16, a “survey” class of the New Testament with an emphasis on the Gospels consisting of 10 classes each semester will be offered, beginning Sept. 1, through Nov. 17, 2015, and in the spring, Jan. 5, through March 8, 2015 (with extension if necessitated by the weath-

er). While the 2 year survey is less intense than the pre-vious 4 year program, the Study will serve as a spring-board for a personal and critical understanding of the historical roots of the text as well as its theology. The

classes will be on Tuesday evenings (7 - 8:45 pm) in Da-mascus. Contact Lois Jansen at 317-241-9169 or

Christian Services St. Vincent De Paul

There will be a "5th Sunday SVdP Col-lection" at the doors of Church after all Masses on 8-30-15. Improvements Have Started for SVdP to Pick up Your Donations (Finally!) "Supply" Problem - SVdP has had a problem being responsive to Donors requests to pick up do-nations. Lots of Donors get frustrated with the process and donate somewhere else. We cannot get enough volunteers to drive trucks to quickly pick up donations. Solution - SVdP Indy has contracted a company to quickly pick up donations and a company to answer Donors calls to donate furniture and appliances. Pick up will be done during the same week, hopefully the next day. These changes should increase donations. TRY IT! Several volunteers who used to answer donation calls are now answering the phone for help requests. This will improve our capability to help peo-ple who need it. Changing Lives Forever - Bridges Out of Poverty. Train-ing to assist families to improve their lives starts on Monday, September 14th for about 14 weeks. Murmuring

I attend meetings of diverse thinking from time to

time.

During some of the discourse I hear murmuring,

Talking under the breath, from this person or that.

Murmuring for the most part is in direct opposition

to what is being said out loud.

As I read the text from St. Paul for today,

I felt myself murmuring! Not my favorite!

However, when I read the gospel for today.

I felt heartbroken for Our Lord Jesus Christ as he

Watched some of the followers leaving because

Of the words spoken of what is required to gain.

The great gift offered of everlasting life.

The St. Chris food pantry is in need of grocery

store paper bags with the handles.

Any and all extra school supplies are also still appreciated! Our pantry youth’s education will

greatly benefit from your generosity!

Meet Trudy the tomato!

She’s been having tons of fun in the

pantry this summer. She would like to

extend a gracious thank you to the gar-

den angels who have worked so dili-

gently to help feed the pantry patrons!

Your help and hard work is greatly ap-

preciated!

To parents of high school teens: In 2013 23,000 teens, plus chaperones, gathered together in the convention center and Lucas Oil Stadium. The events that occurred during these days are life changing. For many teens seeing a football stadium full of people excited to be there for their Catho-lic faith, and not the Colts, it’s the first time they realize the vast size of their faith. A conference like this helps them to feel part of a large group and helps create their Catholic identity in a special way. Please consider sending your high school aged child to NCYC. I strongly believe it is

worth missing the one day of school to attend.

Father Danny is excited to be going to NCYC this fall and he wants St. Christopher to have a large group. Tom and Father Danny kicked around several ideas and we settled on a beard shaving bet. If our group has 50 teens from St. Christopher, then those teens will get to choose what

shape Father Danny shaves his beard into. You can check out the choices from the picture on the side. He promises to not only do it but make sure that everyone in the parish gets to see it by wearing it through a Sunday before he shaves it clean. Father Danny hasn’t shaved his beard in almost 5 years and he is quite fond of it. He is hoping that

49 teens sign up so we still have a large group but he doesn’t have to trim his whiskers.

To high schoolers: Why should you want to attend a conference all about church stuff for 3 days? I would say first off that you get to miss a day of school to be with thousands of other teens. Those three days are filled with all kinds of speakers, mu-sicians, and comedians, all there for you. While the sacraments and prayer are a part of NCYC this is no three day pray-a-

thon. There is a ton of fun stuff to do. Friday and Saturday starts with a large group (25,000 people) meeting in Lucas Oil Sta-dium where a dynamic and fun speaker is featured. After that is finished everyone walks to the Indianapolis Convention Cen-ter where everyone is split up into smaller sessions (5,000 to 50) of your own choosing. Don’t worry, you can change your

mind at the last minute if you want to attend a different session. The smaller sessions last until the evening. Friday evening is

held at Lucas Oil Stadium and it is very similar to the morning session in Lucas Oil Stadium. On Saturday we have Mass as

one large group. As you can imagine communion with 25,000 people can take a bit of time. I really encourage you to go. I

have been to 4 NCYC’s with youth from St. Chris, and everyone who has attended has expressed interest in returning or

wishing that there was a special trip for the college students.

Some of the teens from St. Chris that went to NCYC in 2013 pose with Pope Francis! *It may or may not be the actual Pope Francis.

To sign up for NCYC go to www.saintchristopherparish.org and print off the sign ups from the youth ministry page, or find the form in the

bulletin racks in the back of church. Fill them out and turn them into the office

with a $25 deposit.
