DEVELOP A WELL-informed conscience Forming a good conscience is important and requires training and formation. Our conscience is informed by the Word of God, the sound advice of others, the positive example of others, and guidance from the authori-tative teaching of the Church. Regular examination of conscience, guided by the Holy Spirit, will help you develop a morally perceptive conscience.

The Catholic Church insists that we must always obey “the certain judgment” of our conscience. Yet the Church also teaches that our consciences can be in error, misled by our ignorance or sin, so we can’t declare our consciences to be independent of the Church’s authority and moral teachings. Think about what moral issues might require that you seek the guidance of the Church to help you shape your conscience. Conversion is a lifelong process Since we are human beings, we have times of weakness and turn from God, others, and ourselves. When we fail to live as God wants us to, we sin. God never stops loving us or calling us to wholeness. Jesus assured the converted tax collector Zacchaeus, “Today salvation has come to (your) house” (Luke 19:9). Jesus listened to people, forgave, and healed. Jesus willed that the Church be the instrument of diving forgiveness. So just as Jesus forgave sins and healed, the Church continues Jesus’ ministry of healing. The Church continues to call us to a lifetime of conversion and renewal. As Catholics we continue to deepen our understanding of the ways and life of God and our commitment to them. CONTINUE TO CELEBRATE RECONCILIATION To bring us back to love and forgiveness, god has given us the sacrament of reconciliation. When we enter the sacrament of reconciliation with a true heart and mind, we have the opportunity to experience a genuine healing of our sin and its effects. We meet in faith with the forgiving Christ, who reaches out to forgive our sins and renew our love for God and others.

The steps to reconciliation begin with reflection on the love, mercy, and forgiveness of God and an examina-tion of conscience. Take an honest look at your attitudes and everyday actions. Ask yourself, “Do I love the Lord God with my whole heart, with my soul, with all my mind? Do my actions reflect that love? Do I love and care for others and myself?” Often reflection on the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes are helpful in seeking areas that are in need of change in our lives.

Contrition is the next step: feeling sorrow for our sins and sincerely seeking forgiveness. The confession of our sins is the third, opening our hearts to the sacrament. In telling our sins to a priest, we look directly at our wrongdoings and take responsibility for them. God grants us forgiveness and peace through the absolution of the priest. Our Sunday Visitor

The Ten Commandments

1. I am the Lord your God. You shall not have other gods besides me. 2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God

in Vain. 3. Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day. 4. Honor your father and your mother. 5. You shall not kill. 6. You shall not commit adultery. 7. You shall not steal 8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 9. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. 10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house, nor anything else that belongs to him.

Act of Contrition

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my hearts.

In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you,

Whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help,

To do penance, to sin no more, And to avoid whatever leads me to sin.

Our Savior, Jesus Christ, suffered and died for us. In His name, my God, have mercy.

Summer Bible Study

Starting Wednesday July 7, Deacon Patrick will be offering a weekly Bible Study on FaceBook Live and the parish website for anyone who is interested. We will be walking through 1 Corinthians, which is a great book of the Bible. Although St Paul wrote it 2,000 years ago, there is so much in there that is good for us to pray on. There is no sign-up required-- come to one week or every week! The Study will run from 7:00-7:45 every Wednesday. Previous sessions can be found on the parish website.

BEVERLY BOOTSTRAPS WEEK With The

BEVERLY CATHOLIC COLLABORATIVE As part of our continued communal almsgiving the first weekend of each month will be Beverly Bootstraps Week. We will be providing to the poor in Beverly, thru Beverly Boot-straps, some of their most needed items.

THIS WEEK ~~August 1~~ Toilet Paper/Paper Towels

Boxes will be provided by each church door.

PLANNING A SUMMER VACATION?

www.MassTimes.org is a website that offers information to those looking for a weekend Mass while traveling throughout the United States. By entering the zip code of the city/town you will be visiting, the names and ad-dresses of churches as well as Mass times will be provid-ed. You may also call 1-800 Mass Times or 1-800-627-7846.

In order to commemorate the upcoming Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we will celebrate Solemn Vespers at Saint Mary Star of the Sea on Sunday, August 15 at 4:00pm. Vespers, or Evening Prayer, is part of the Liturgy of the Hours (also known as the Divine Office). The Liturgy of the Hours belongs to the formal public prayer of the universal Church; it is offered at set times throughout each day in different languages across the world. Its origins date back to ancient times, and its purpose is the praise of God and the sanctification of the day with prayer. As Liturgy, it is known as prayer par excellence, the prayer of Christ Himself, offered with His Body, the Church, to God the Father. Priests, bishops, nuns, monks, deacons, and the pope promise to pray the Liturgy of the Hours every day, and, since the Second Vatican Council, the Church has been encouraging the laity to deepen their life of prayer by joining in. All are invited and most welcome to attend, knowing, as the Church teaches, Those taking part in the Liturgy of the Hours have access to holiness of the richest kind through the life-giving word of God, which in this Liturgy receives great emphasis.

Patron of the Universal Church

There are patron saints for many things, which is always good to know. St An-thony is the patron saint of lost items, St Jude is the patron saint of people in need of great healing, and St Clare is the patron saint of television (there’s a cool story there!). St Joseph has the great tle of “Patron Saint of the Universal Church.” This tle is

ng, as St Joseph served as a spiritual father (La n pater, from which we get the word patron) in the Holy Family. The Holy Family has been seen as the rst Church, so this tle was ng. Pope Leo XIII noted this as did his predecessor, Blessed Pope Pius IX. It was Bl Pius IX who declared St Joseph as the Patron of the Universal Church in 1870. As Patron of the Universal Church, St Joseph looks out for the Church and cares for it. When Jesus was a Child, St Joseph would protect him from all dangers and enemies, espe-cially King Herod. We can imagine the long journey from Bethlehem to Egypt with the newborn and the Blessed Mother. He must have sacri ced and su ered so much along the journey, out of love for Jesus and Mary. Likewise, he watches over us. May we trust in his care, and call out for his help!

WHY DO ALL THE MARIAN APPARITIONS LOOK DIFFERENT?

It’s first important to acknowledge that all Marian apparitions declared “worthy of belief” by the Holy See are apparitions of one person: Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Although she looks difference, speaks different languages and bears different messages, she is always the same person As Mother of the Church, Mary is mother to every person in the world. It makes sense that when appearing to peoples of certain culture, she would appear as a native, speaking their language and dressing as they do. When Mary appeared as Our Lady of Lourdes, she spoke French to St. Bernadette. When Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to St. Juan Diego in Mexi-

co, she spoke his native language of the Aztec Empire and work native clothing. When Mary appears, she comes bearing a message. She exhorts seers to pray, fast or increase certain devo-tions. When Our Lady appeared to St. Catherine Laboure in 1830, she urged the French nun to have the words “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee” engraved on a medal. As a re-sult, many faithful now wear Miraculous Medals. When Our Lady appeared in Fatima, she urged the chil-dren to pray the Rosary every day to bring peace to the world. When Mary appears to different peoples at different times, she brings new messages that are often particular to the time and place. Appearing under different apparitions allows her to reach many people throughout the world. Although Catholics are not obliged to believe in Church-approved apparitions, these apparitions and their messages can aid our faith and help us in our journey to heaven. We can be confident that private revela-tions and apparitions will never surpass or correct the revelation of Christ. (cc 65-67) Just as Mary sought to bring people to her son on earth, she still appears to us to help guide us toward salvation through Jesus.

“Let us never forget that an age prospers or dwindles in proportion to its devotion to the Holy Eucharist ” -St Peter Julian Eymard

The Church celebrates the feast day of St Peter Julian Eymard on August 2. A nineteenth-century French saint, St Peter Julian Eymard is known for living a quiet life with great devotion to St. Joseph and to the Eucharist. He is a fitting saint to learn about during the Year of St Joseph for the Universal Church and the Year of the Eu-charist in the Archdiocese of Boston! From an early age, St Peter Julian displayed his love for the Eucharist. His sister would find him in the village chapel often and he was known to compose prayers to be prayed in the presence of the Eucharist at a young age. Desiring to become a priest early on in his life, St Peter Julian was faced with op-position from his father and from the world around him. France was still recovering from an anti-Catholic prejudice following the French Revolution, and St Peter Julian suffered from this. He persevered and was ordained a priest. He eventually founded two religious communities: the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (for men) and the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament (for women). Both communities prioritize Per-petual Adoration. He understood that all people, both men and women, needed to fos-ter a devotion to Jesus in the Eucharist. There is no better means for this than going to Eucharistic Adoration! Throughout his lifetime, many saints emerged from France, all of whom had great devotion to Adoration.
