Pm Looking for a Tenner!

In Ireland, Lent and Trocaire seem to be synonymous. Troeaire is the Irish Catholic Agency for World Development. Part of being Christian means having a concern for those who are less well off than ourselves.

When reading the Trocaire Information pack, 1 was startled to read some amazing statistics. The extra amount of money needed to provide basic education in third World Countries would be $6 billion - in Europe $ 1 1 billion is spent on Ice Cream. Basic health and education would cost $ 13 billion - pet foods in Europe and the US costs $ 17 billion. The comparisons go on and on.

The wealth of the world’s 225 richest people equals the income of half the world’s population. Now with the Celtic Tiger raging, we have many blessings and problems. Many young couples who are both working continue to find it difficult to buy a home. It’s not all joy, but we’re doing fairly well. However, the startling news from the Third World seems to be that things are actually getting worse for them. More facts: in Zambia, life expectancy has fallen from 54 in 1991, to 42 in 1997. The Debt Crises seems to have undone much of the help done in the past. Sub Saharan Africa pays more than $ 12 billion in debt servicing charges every year and owes another $8 billion that it cannot pay. However, just $2 billion would be enough to give all the region’s children a place in primary school.

So they need our help in two ways:i) to convince the IMF and the developed worlds to cancel the debts for the Millennium, andii) they need our financial support now.

In Rwanda, £10 will purchase a hoe, seeds and fertilizers to enable a family to farm for a year. So Fmlooking for a Tenner for Rwanda - sure we’d spend more on a round of drinks for a (Rwandan)family!

4.LUCAN TOASTMASTERS

We had another great meeting last Thursday in Finnstown House Hotel. Cormac Mac Donnchadha gave us his Icebreaker, and had us very envious of the active life he leads with all his adventure sports. Compared to some of his adventures, public speaking will be no challenge at all! We look forward to hearing about some more over the next few months.Once more we were joined by a number of guests. Many of our recent guests have joined and w'e are really delighted to have them with us. It won’t be long before we’re enjoying their Icebreakers. To find out more about Toastmasters, and to hear what an Icebreaker actually is, come along to our next meeting on Thursday March 4th in Finnstown House Hotel at 8pm. We’d love to share our meetings with you, and we guarantee you’ ll be made very welcome by all the members.Linda Fagan. Telephone 6281770.

Young Families in Parish Mdlennium/JubiSee As we enter the third Millennium, it is only fitting that we celebrate this landmark in our history. To commemorate it in a special way, a Parish Working Group has been set up specifically to reflect the views of young families, many of whom of course will have school-going children. This group has no special expertise in this area, consisting of ordinary members of the Parish and as such would like to hear your views. As a first step, to try to elicit some proposals, a questionnaire has been drawn up and is in the process of being distributed through the school children to their parents. Amongst the ideas proposed are:1 . Children's Historical Pageant2. Erection of Religious Sculpture3. Improvement to Church Facilities such as

Creche etc.4. Tree planting or erection of some other

symbol in each estate to mark the Millennium

5. Grand ‘block’ party for residents in each estate.

Space has been provided for other proposals. If you have any ideas (religious or secular) for celebrating the Millennium, please contact any member of the committee, or send your suggestions c/o St. Mary ’s Parish Centre, Lucan. We are delighted to announce the launch of our Counselling Support Service. In co-operation with Personal Counselling Institute, this serv ice is extended to parishioners. If you wish to be referred, please contact any member of the Parish team or the Home/School Liaison teacher in Archbishop Ryan National School. This marks a new venture in Parish Ministry and we are proud to offer it.

We are exploring ways to allow people to view the plans that have been submitted for our new Church. We hope to select a design by mid- March. The wisdom and guidance of people is important in this great venture. How many people have ever had a say in the building of their own parish Church?

Best of luck to our retreat group who travel to Termonfeckin this week.

Many thanks to the Tainiste for her visit to our school this week. She expressed her awe and admiration for the wonderful work of our Parish School. The doors of the school are open to all. She remarked that schools often have to cope with the changes in society before the legislator Our address is becomes aware of those changes. How right she is! Our school meets the needs of this unique area of Dublin. The school is setting standards and trends in its discipline for learning programme and in it’s multi-cultural approach to education.http://homepage.tinet.ie/~lucansouthparish/lucan/

Lucan Heights ResidentsI attended a Garda Siochana Seminar for New ghbourhood Watch, last Tuesday, 23rd on your behalf. Neighbourhood Watch is now a vital part of Gardai agenda, and more and more will play a major role in fighting crime. Gardai need our help as much as we need theirs.I shall keep you informed each week on various aspects of N.W. For now, be Alert. Aware, Secure and, especially this Lent be a Good Neighbour. Luccw CoYvum ufiityC o t w s j c d /LaraghconWe have submitted an appeal to An Bord Pleanala in relation to the granting of permission for the building of 355houses at Laraghcon. The location of these proposed houses is such as to visually intrude upon die Liffey Valley and to overlook Lucan Village in a manner which would cause irreparable damage to the centuries old natural backdrop to the village. We have in recent months welcomed the intention of South Dublin County Council to take steps towards seeking our designation as a Heritage Village. Any development at Laraghcon, with its devastating visual impact and potential for traffic chaos would, in the opinion of many, make a mockery of any such ambitions. We ask all concerned residents and organisations to give serious consideration to making submissions in support of our appeal against the proposed houses at Laraghcon. Last June, An Bord Pleanala rejected an almost identical proposal for houses at this location, and if local opposition remains vocal. We are confident that it will once again rule in our favour. All correspondence should be forwarded, together with the appropriate Fee (£36) to An Bord Pleanala, Floor 3, Block 6, Irish Life Centre, Lower Abbey St., Dublin l before the end of March. We may be contacted at our office at the rear of the Old V.E.C. in Lucan Village (Ph.6280074).

Lucan B.N.S.Congratulations are the order o f the day this week in Lucan B.N.S. We had another great win in the Cadbury’s Schools Quiz recently.50 teams from the South West area took part and the Lucan boys won the day with a fabulous score o f 57/60. The heroes were: Stephen Kelly, Damien Kelly, Declan Reidy and Mark Brennan. Well done boys, watch out for your place in our Hall of Fame in the school. Well done also to Kevin Smith, Carl White, Eoin Morrissey, Andrew Smyth, Peter Callaghan, Stephen O’Connell and Jonathan Cosgrove who also took part and performed very well. Winners now go to the National Final in the Burlington on 14th March. This is the third year in a row that a team from the school has reached the National Final and that must be a record! Well done to our neighbours in the girls’ school who came 3rd in the quiz.

Crunch! Crunch! We are so proud o f the boys in 6^ class who reached the Dublin final of the “Le Crunch” song contest. The son written by the boys in r. Kelly’s class with the musical support o f Eithne Donnelly narrowly missed a place in the A ll Ireland Finals in the Olympia last week. We may have discovered some songwriters in our school.

Ms. Manning’s class had a great trip to a free showing of “ A Bug’s Life” last week.

Our Computer Room is looking really good now and we are on schedule for used fairly soon, when the children will have access to a state o f the art IT room. Watch this space!

The annual 5th year tour headed to Switzerland. The first leg of the journey was by air to Paris, and on to a coach to travel overland to Interlacken.Snow, snow and more snow!!! The abundance o f snow added to the excitement and enjoyment o f the 89 5th year students who travelled. Having commenced their tour with a full day in Paris, the group made their way through what can only be described as a winter wonderland, to their final destination, Interlacken. On one of the brilliant sunny days, the groups travelled by cable car, to the t op of the Shiltom - James Bond country! Activities included ice-skating, sleigh rides and tobogganing down an 8km slope - not for the faint-hearted. A visit to Lucerne included a trip to the famous transport museum. Leaving the snowy climes, the tour finished with an unforgettable day in Eurodisney. A memorable trip for all!

S k i Trip 999:3 3 students and 3 teachers headed to Bulgaria for seven days. This was our first ski trip ever and all were very excited and delighted when we arrived to record snow conditions. Two* hours o f instruction morning and afternoon with our instructors, Alex,Victor and Pebko soon had all snow ploughing and traversing. Day four saw most groups up the top o f the mountain skiing all the way down. Words cannot describe the feeling - all pupils want to go again next year. Apres Ski is a must, and bowling, swimming, tobogganing, disco, ski show and shopping kept us all busy.

CongratulationsColette Walker, County Co-ordinator for the Cadbury’s NPC Challenge Quiz, extends her congratulations to St. Mary’s B.N.S. on winning 1st place in the County Final last Sunday, (see report under Lucan B.N.S.) Congratulations are also extended to the girls from Scoil Mhuire G.N.S. on achieving 3rf place after two tense tie-breaker rounds. The girls were Sarah Argue, Emer Cooke, Jill Clarke and Siobhan Sedghi-Khoi.

Colette thanks all the schools in Lucan who entered teams in this memorable event and a special mention is made of teachers and parents who prepared the children to such a high standard

Lucan Adult Education ServiceThere are a number of vacancies in the following classes:Spellings, Communications,Childcare, Basic English. If you know of anyone who needs help with reading and writing, please contact us at L.I.F.E. Centre, Esker Hill, Lucaa Tel. 01- 6280029

Did you know...........that there is at least one Post Pillar Box in Lucan which was originally painted red?

The Post Box at Dodsboro P.O. dates from the time of Queen Victoria. Look for the “V R” (Victoria Regina) inter-twined, though well weathered, on the front

Up to the time of the Free State in 1922, all post boxes were Royal Mail red. Some bear the inscription “E R” (King Edward) and others “G R” (King George). From 1922 on, all were

painted green.

It seems odd that a relatively newly developed area like Dodsboro should have such an old- post box, while the Village was robbed of one for the benefit of Dublin 4, in the not too distant pastNext time you post that letter, take a look at your Post Box! m.m.

Rugby Win Attributed to Esker. The Irish Rugby Team stayed atFinnstown prior to their Visit to Wembley last

Saturday. One of their party visited Esker Church, where he received a bottle of Holy Water from Sacristan Joe Byrne - assured that it would do the trick. Boy did it work!

f Watch out for the film-makers this week

as cameras roll from Sunday 28th Feb. until Saturday 6th March. Pucan Film

Productions hope to cause as little disruption as possible.

fBest of Luck to Jody on her 30th Birthday. All her set dancing friends were seen in Kennys on Friday night.

Primrose Hill House & Gardens close this Sunday until mid June when once again visitors will be welcome to see the lovely display of flowers and plants.

We were sorry to hear this week of the death of Fr. Des Dockery, (PP Rathdrum & Harolds Cross) and Fr. Con O’Keefe (P.E. Bohemabreena). May they rest in peace.

We had a look at the road repairs done by the Co. Council on the hill up to Lucan Heights last Thursday. They have put in a fairly substantial drain - let’s hope it solves the major flooding there.

We encourage people to support the Women’s World Day of Prayer, which will be held this year in St. Mary’s Parish Centre. People put a lot of work into arranging this annual event. They deserve to have a good number of people present.

There seems to be no sign to say when work wil be finished at Texaco - isn’t it a huge job?

We wonder if they will make pull-in provision for the many trucks that park so dangerously on the road there

Have a nice week!

WESTON HOCKEY CLUBThe Men’s 2nd and 3rd teams had a free weekend The Men’s lsts travelled to Railway Union in 2nd place in their League, one point behind the leaders Pembroke. While Pembroke could only draw with their opposition Weston were unable to take advantage of this by loosing to Railway by 4 goals to 1. However, this setback still leaves them in 2nd place, 2 points behind the leaders. The Ladies 2nds had no game. The Ladies lsts travelled to Dublin University who have a new Astroturf pitch on superb lands at Glasnevin and lost by 3-1. While Weston scored in the first five minutes through a breakaway goal by Siobhan Donachie superbly taken, DCU levelled within 3 minutes. The score stood at 1-1 at halftime with Weston having the better chances and coming near to scoring on several occasions. Within 2 minutes of the 2nd hald DCU went ahead through generous defending by Weston from a penalty comer and added a third 4 minutes later. Weston pushed for the equalizer leaving gaps at the back and but for superb goalkeeping by Annemarie the final score could have been 6-1.For further information please ring the Office 6219026.

DandelionsHere at last to pay my respects There's a yellow carpet on the grave. It looks pretty from a distance like it has been laid with love.Close up I see it’s dandelions.A man with tearful eyes kneels at a grave close by replenishing a vase with daffodils He looks up but doesn't speak. If he asks I'll confess this is my mother’s grave and say I’d meant to come before but life got in the way;I have commitments, time is scarce and it’ s not an easy journey. My mother would have smiled and said dandelions are flowers too.
