LOCATION SUNBURY/BIG WALNUT AREA

The Sunbury/Big Walnut Area Chamber of Commerce serves two villages and six townships

conveniently located near the junction of Interstate 71 and U.S. Highway 36 in Central Ohio.

This area is situated approximately 20 miles north of Columbus in eastern

Delaware County. The villages of Sunbury and Galena are in this locale, as are the townships of Berkshire, Genoa, Harlem, Kingston, Porter and Trenton.

Ohio Wesleyan University is 12 miles to the west in the city of Delaware, and the Rutherford B. Hayes Birthplace historic site can also be found in that city. The Big

Walnut Creek flows through the county and into the Hoover Reservoir just south of Galena.

Otterbein College is situated a dozen miles to the south and closer to Columbus, where you can also find Ohio State University another 13 miles down the road.

The hospitals of Mount Carmel St. Ann’s and Grady Memorial also serve the Sunbury/Big Walnut area, where the unique little communities of East Liberty, Olive Green, North Condit, Condit Station, South Condit, Harlem and Center Village add local flavor.

In addition, this is a prime area for golf courses and dealers of antiques. There are 22 golf courses in Delaware County, and the door to the past can be unlocked in at least as many antique dealerships in downtown Sunbury.

Six of the county’s golf courses have meeting/banquet rooms, and there are nearly 20 other locations with meeting facilities. Also, overnight accom-modations can be found at a dozen bed and breakfasts, hotels, and motels. In addition, there is a full complement of more than 50 eateries suited for any palate.

For those traveling for pleasure or busi-ness, the cities of Cincinnati (111 miles), Cleveland (141 miles), Indianapolis (178 miles), Pittsburgh (187 miles), Detroit (206 miles), Chicago (319 miles), Washington, D.C. (420 miles), and St. Louis (472 miles) are not too far from the Sunbury/Big Walnut area.

Acres of fun can be found close to home at places like the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, Olentangy Indian Caverns, Wyandot Lake water-theme park, and Alum Creek State Park.

It’s easy to see that this area is right in the heart of things.

SUNBURY/BIG WALNUT AREA BUSINESS & INDUSTRY

People interested in things as var-ied as antique shops and industrial parks are seeing the benefits of the

Sunbury/Big Walnut area and all it has to offer. The area is well established as a mecca for antique enthusiasts, and an industrial park also adds to the mix.

There is also a charming town square (dating back to the early 1800s) and the American Showa plant, which manufac-tures parts for Honda automobiles and Harley-Davidson motorcycles. In addition, a concrete company calls this area home, as does a new strip mall center featuring a

bank and urgent-care facility. Other busi-nesses providing job opportunities include electronic manufacturers and fabricators, a pre-fab building company, a nationally known water drilling and supply company, and a printing company.

The new strip mall center is a conve-nient two blocks from the village square in Sunbury. National City Bank, Immediate Urgent Care @ Sunbury, and Love Me Tender Pet Supply were quick to become tenants of the venue.

Eastern Delaware County is strategically located for both U.S. and international

business and features a mix of agriculture, manufacturing, distribution, retail and higher-education opportunities.

Industrial park tenant Oberfield’s Inc. is Ohio’s largest concrete products manu-facturer and has its own line of concrete masonry units, limestone brick, pavers, retaining walls and precast site amenities. Also, concrete countertops are among the other items offered.

According to the Delaware County Economic Development Department Web site, the area has a variety of industrial and commercial sites that are fully serviced

with utilities and access roads. Attractive financing packages, including fixed-asset loans, grants and tax incentives, are offered to qualifying businesses and industries.

There are 28 acres, which can be devel-oped into flexible lot sizes, listed as avail-able at the Sunbury Commerce Park. The commerce park is zoned for commercial use; retail, commercial and office space is available.

The commerce park has regional acces-sibility from State Route 3, south of U.S.

36-State Route 37. Businesses currently in the park are Ohashi Manufacturing and the Sunbury County Store & Café.

The village of Sunbury encourages you to spend a day antiquing in this beautiful, historic location, where 12 shops boast a wide variety of antiques and collectibles sure to tempt you.

Sunbury’s antique dealers include Valentine Antique Gallery, Carriage House Antiques, Cherry Street Antiques, King’s Antiques, Sunshine Antiques & Collectibles Mall, Lindas 3 and Porcelain & Patina Antiques, Second Hand Antiques, Weidner’s Village Square Antique Mall, Coffee’s Antiques & Upstairs Shoppe, Village Antiques, and State Route 61 Antiques.

A taste of the village can be found at PJ’s Pizza, Sunbury Country Store & Café, Pizza Hut, Sunbury Grill, Long Branch Pizza, Wah Yuen Restaurant, Aunt Ivy’s Tea House, Creme Corner, Fracasso’s Pizza, Jules’, and Eastern Buffet.

The Polaris Fashion Place, located on Interstate 71 south of the villages of Sunbury and Galena, is one of the state’s premier shopping malls and fea-tures seven anchor stores. Shoppers are

enticed by a combination of upscale mer-chants, local favorites and other retailers, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Kaufmann’s, The Great Indoors, Lazarus/Macy’s, Sears and JCPenney.

Also, the Sunbury/Big Walnut area is part of Central Ohio’s Heritage Circle, where big spenders and bargain hunters can scour the countryside for assorted gifts and treasures.

On Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day, the action spills from the shops out onto the Sunbury village square for an old-fashioned flea market.

The Christmas on the Square Festival is held in Sunbury on the first Saturday of each December, and a vintage auto “Country Cruise-In” brings business to area merchants the first Sunday in October.

Restaurants, overnight accommodations and meeting facilities are all prevalent in Delaware County, and visiting business-men can find just the right spot to conduct business, dine and rest. For additional information and assistance in arranging conferences, please contact the Delaware County Convention & Visitors Bureau at 740-368-4748 or 888-DEL-OHIO or at www.visitdelohio.com.

Ohio Fallen Heroes MemorialSunbury is proud to be the home of

the recently dedicated Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial, built in memory of Ohio mili-tary personnel who have lost their lives while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan in the battle against terrorism. In November 2005, Sunbury Village Council approved a proposal to honor Ohio’s fallen soldiers by officially dedicating a memorial site on a narrow strip of village-owned property on

the south side of West Cherry Street oppo-site the Sunbury Memorial Park.

At the same time, Ohio Representative Jon Peterson introduced House Concurrent Resolution 30, declaring Sunbury’s memo-rial the official state of Ohio site dedicated to those who have died in the Middle East during the past five years. Peterson and State Senator Bill Harris shepherded the resolution through the Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate unopposed.

On July 1, 2006, the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial committee members held the official dedication ceremony of the memo-rial. The memorial monument, made of Indian black granite, is inscribed with the American flag, the head of a bald eagle, and the logos of each military service. The inscription on the monument reads, “The nation that forgets its defenders will itself be forgotten.”

As of this writing, 123 Ohio military personnel have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thirty-five of the 123 granite crosses are in place just behind the monu-ment, with the remaining crosses to be placed within the next year. A memorial ceremony will be held each year at the site of the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial on the Saturday before the Fourth of July.

American Cancer Society — Big Walnut Relay for Life

Each spring, a large group of dedi-cated cancer survivors, their families and friends, and those who have lost loved ones to this dreaded disease gather at the Big Walnut High School track to “relay for life.” Walkers gather sponsor sup-port to raise money for cancer research, with many local businesses, churches and organizations forming teams of walkers to walk, run, skip or dance around the track beginning Friday evening at 6 p.m. and going through the night, until noon on Saturday.

The first lap is for cancer survivors, in their honor, following which the teams take off and walk. Tents are pitched in hopes of a few quick naps for the all-night walkers. Teams set up grills, not only to cook their meals, but also to sell food in hopes of rais-ing more money for their team effort. A local DJ plays music and promotes various games and giveaways, other local entertain-ment performs, and corporate sponsors donate prizes for the event.

The Big Walnut Relay, held the second weekend in June in 2006, raised approxi-mately $55,000 for cancer research. The commitment of the community to support this cause, year after year, is evident by the hours of planning by many individuals

that go into making this event one of the high-lights of the area.

Big Walnut Friends Who Share

Big Walnut Friends Who Share (BWFWS) is a nonprofit organiza-tion dedicated to assisting families in the Big Walnut School District. BWFWS works by the community helping the community. Volunteers sort donations and stock the shelves and assist clients when they

come to the center each week. Donations of new, nearly new and gen-

tly used items, such as clothing, household items, non-perishable food items and cash donations, are what keep this organiza-tion’s doors open. Clothing, coats, shoes, baby furniture, blankets, towels, small appliances, toiletries and paper products are just a few of the items the community donates on a regular basis. Local churches take part in the program by taking one month each year to be responsible for stocking the food pantry.

In July, BWFWS takes donations of school supplies and fills book bags for each of the children of the client families so they will be sure to have all of the necessary sup-plies to start school in the fall. The book bag program was begun in memory of a local BW boy, Brett Stelzer, by his family. Brett died in a hiking accident several years ago.

The Christmas program works in a similar way, by having the churches and other local organizations take donations of gifts — both fun things for the children and necessary items for the home, such as pillows and blankets — and filling boxes for each client family.

In October of each year, BWFWS hosts a 10K walk-a-thon, and everyone is invited to participate. Families who use the ser-vices of the center, as well as volunteer workers, church groups and the general public, secure sponsors who donate money for them to walk around the village of Sunbury. This, as well as a silent auction held by the Chamber of Commerce at its annual dinner meeting in November, are primary sources of funding that make the Christmas program work.

Over 150 families in the Big Walnut School District make use of the center’s

services on a regular basis. It truly is the community helping the community.

4-H and the FairsMany opportunities are available for

local youth to participate in various 4-H clubs in the area. Community service proj-ects and fundraising are a large part of the clubs’ commitment to the community. The community has also made a commitment to these youth by providing a venue for them to showcase their projects, whether they are crafts or livestock, at the Delaware County Fair and the Hartford Fair.

The Hartford Fair takes place the first full week of August each year in the village of Croton, in Licking County, about 12 miles east of Sunbury. Visitors to the fair can enjoy watching the youth show their steers, dairy cows, lambs and chickens, or browse through the 4-H building to look at the project displays. The Harford Fair is an independent fair known locally as “The Biggest Little Fair in the World!”

The Delaware County Fair takes place in September and is the proud home of the Little Brown Jug, one of the triple crowns of harness racing. Because this fair takes place in Delaware County and is only a short drive from Sunbury, many local 4-H participants take advantage of showing their projects here. The Delaware County Fair board works hard to put together a schedule of fine enter-tainment for the week, so you can be sure there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Sunbury Farmers’ MarketEach Saturday from mid-May through

mid-October, you can visit the square in Sunbury and purchase your weekly supply of fresh fruits, vegetables, baked goods, plants, flowers and handmade crafts. The annual Farmers’ Market began in 2005 and continues to grow each week. Visitors shop from 9 a.m. until noon, and typically there are more than 30 vendors set up to offer a wonderful selection of homemade and handmade food and crafts.

Vendors can purchase a season pass to set up each week, or they can pay a small fee to set up on a weekly basis. The Delaware County Council for Older Adults offers food vouchers to county residents to be used at local farm markets to purchase produce and baked goods.

Rain or shine, we invite you to attend the Sunbury Farmers’ Market and enjoy some of the best our local farmers and crafters have to offer.

Fresh produce, baked goods, plants and handmade crafts are available at the Farmers’ Market.

J.R. Smith Park in Sunbury acts as host to many little league activities and fea-tures a baseball diamond, picnic area,

playground equipment, a skate park, and football and soccer fields. The Big Walnut Conservation Club hosts little league activ-ities, and the YMCA of Central Ohio has plans under way to bring a facility to the Big Walnut area.

Harlem Bicentennial Park, near Center Village, has a picnic area with a shelter house and baseball diamonds. Ruffner Park in Galena has baseball diamonds, a picnic area with a shelter house, and a nice play-ground. McNamara Park, located in Genoa Township, boasts a playground, shelter house, soccer fields and a direct connection to the Ohio to Erie Trail, a bike and walking path that runs through Genoa Township to the southern part of Galena. The village of Galena is proud of their newly completed boardwalk on Hoover Reservoir, where you can enjoy the wildlife and waterlife.

Athletic associations in Sunbury consist of the Girls Softball Association, Junior Baseball Association, Soccer Association, Youth Athletic Association, Youth Basketball Association and the Big Walnut Athletic Boosters.

Other recreational opportunities in the area include:

B ig Walnut Local Schools was cre-ated in 1950 by the merger of Sunbury and Galena Schools; two

years later, Harlem Township School joined the district. The mission statement of Big Walnut Local Schools reads: “The mission of the Big Walnut Local Schools is to cre-ate a learning environment that optimizes each student’s potential to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to live a rewarding and responsible life.”

Over the past 50 years, the district has evolved from a mostly agricultural com-munity to a district that is predominantly suburban/residential. Big Walnut empha-sizes the core values of student-focused education, excellence, cooperation, dedi-cation and integrity.

Big Walnut Local Schools’ strong aca-demic program provides a solid educational foundation for students, who grow and learn in the security of a small community

of strong family values. Extracurricular activities give academic, artistic and ath-letic opportunities to all students, and parental support is evident through par-ent-teacher organizations and parental involvement in volunteer activities and athletic booster groups.

Seventy percent of Big Walnut High School graduates advance to college or a techni-cal school, and the district has a dedication to meeting challenges through updated

technology, a strategic plan that anticipates growth, a dedicated staff, and a curriculum designed to educate all students.

In 2004, the community approved a bond issue that will allow the district to make approximately $13 million in repairs and improvements to all its school build-ings, to improve security, and to upgrade technology. One big project is taking place at the high school: An addition of 13 classrooms and a science lab are being con-structed. Central air conditioning is being added at the middle school.

The student population here con-tinues to grow, and test scores that are already high continue to improve to even higher levels. The district’s excellence also includes student achievement in extracur-ricular activities, and Big Walnut students and staff continue to be involved in a wide range of activities within the community. From award-winning performers in music, drama and sports to involvement in raising funds for local, national and international efforts, Big Walnut has represented the community well.

Big Walnut High SchoolBeing a cut above the rest continues to

be a way of life at Big Walnut High School. On all standardized tests, students’ scores continued to be above state and national averages, and the attendance rate for staff and students also exceeds the state aver-age. In addition, the national average of 10 percent participation in music programs is far exceeded by Big Walnut’s figure of 22 percent.

Big Walnut Middle SchoolStudent success at Big Walnut Middle

School was not limited to being within

the four walls of a classroom. Sixth-graders spent four days and three nights at the Mohican Outdoor School, where numerous hours were spent on outdoor learning activities. In addition, eighth grade students made the annual trip to Washington, D.C., where they spent five days and four nights and visited most of the major monuments and several gov-ernment buildings.

Big Walnut Elementary SchoolThe students and staff at Big Walnut

Elementary School are known for hav-ing big hearts and helping hands. The school regularly provides necessary items to the Delaware County Humane Society; provided mittens, hats and scarves to Big Walnut Friends Who Share; collected $6,000 for the American Heart Association; and raised $3,500 for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. The school also managed to save 11.6 acres of the South American rain forest.

Harrison Street Elementary SchoolCommunity service is a source of

pride for this little school with an enrollment of less than 300. There was nothing small about the $1,600 Harrison Street raised for tsunami relief, the $2,400 raised by Jump Rope for Heart, and the $4,482 raised in a bake sale. The fourth graders generously donated $160 they had raised — by making and selling towels while studying economics — to the third and fifth grade classes for field trips.

Hylen Souders Elementary SchoolDuring its 30th anniversary year in

2004–2005, Souders Elementary received new playground equipment from the PTO. Students provided help to Operation Christmas Child, Relay for Life, Jump Rope

for Life and Friends Who Share. Opportunities to learn and share were also available through the tal-ent show, chess club, band, Sidesteppers, art club, art crew, spelling bee and science fair. There were also trips made to COSI and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

History• 1950 — Sunbury and Galena

School Districts were abolished by the Delaware County Board of Education, which then created Big Walnut Local Schools.

• 1952 — Harlem-Center Village joined Big Walnut.

• 1963 — Big Walnut High School was doubled from its 1951 size.

• 1969 — A state-of-the-art middle school was constructed in Sunbury.

• 1974 — In Harlem Township, Hylen Souders Elementary School was built.

• 1991 — A new high school was constructed.

• 2000 — A joint-venture agreement was made by Big Walnut Schools and the Village of Sunbury to build a new elementary building and a com-munity park.

New SuperintendentApril Domine began her tenure as super-

intendent of Big Walnut Local Schools on July 1, 2006. Domine is a veteran of the education field and comes to Big Walnut from the nearby Olentangy Schools, where she was the director of continuous improve-ment. The Big Walnut job is her first as a superintendent.

Private SchoolsGenoa Baptist, Delaware Christian and

Delaware St. Mary’s are among the largest private schools in the area. Genoa Baptist is a local school, but Delaware Christian and Delaware St. Mary’s are located out-side the boundaries of the Big Walnut Local School district. Because so many residents of Sunbury/Big Walnut commute to Columbus, they have an opportunity to drop their children off at a number of private schools along the way.

Higher EducationThere are also plenty of opportuni-

ties for students to pursue higher edu-cation at one of the many nearby col-leges or universities. Among the choices are Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Delaware Area Career Center, Mt. Vernon Nazarene College in Mount Vernon, Ohio Dominican College in Columbus, Capital University in Columbus, and the Ohio State University in Columbus and its many nearby branches.

Big Walnut Middle School’s arts programs include choir.

A good number of churches, repre-senting a wide variety of denomi-nations, provide plenty of worship

opportunities in the Big Walnut area. There are also active religious groups for youth in this community, which also ben-efits from the presence of a local ministe-rial association.

Denominations represented by churches in the Chamber’s area include Presbyterian, various Baptist denominations, United and Wesleyan Methodist, Lutheran, Catholic, Church of the Nazarene, and Seventh-Day Adventist.

Ministerial AssociationAn active ministerial association helps

members of the clergy in reaching their goal of maintaining a community where a sense of brotherhood and good will is evident even outside the walls of a person’s home church.

It is the general mission of the Big Walnut Ministerial Association (BWMA) “to promote unity among the area churches in the Big Walnut area and in cooperation with one another to provide for the spiri-tual, emotional and physical needs of those within the community. The Ministerial Association accomplishes this through monthly meetings of area pastors where genuine relationships are encouraged,

ministry ideas are shared to be considered, benevolence plans and activity reviewed, and friendships are forged.”

Although the goal of treating others as you yourself would like to be treated is a full-time proposition, the goals of BWMA are specifically addressed in January, when prayer for one another is promoted; in the spring, when there is a community service of praise and prayer; and in the fall, when a Thanksgiving community service is held.

The idea of being a shared source of min-istry to those in need is achieved through involvement with Big Walnut Friends Who Share and working with transients.

The Sunbury/Big Walnut Area Chamber of Commerce, estab-lished in 1977, serves the villages

of Sunbury and Galena and the townships of Berkshire, Genoa, Harlem, Kingston, Porter and Trenton.

Village of SunburyThe name “Sunbury” was established

in Delaware County, Ohio, well before William and Lawrence Myers platted the town on Nov. 9, 1816. Eight years earlier, county commissioners formed Sunbury Township, which took in the balance of the county not previously laid out.

In 1816, the Village of Sunbury was laid out in Berkshire Township by Pennsylvania brothers William and Lawrence Myers. It is believed they named the village for Sunbury Township, Pennsylvania.

Village of GalenaZoar changed its name to Galena in

1834, some 25 years after Gilbert Carpenter had founded the village.

Early settlers included some soldiers from the American Revolution. Ed Sherman, who held a patent on building covered bridges, was among other early settlers, most of whom arrived here from Pennsylvania.

Berkshire TownshipThe first group of settlers arrived in this

township in 1804 after Col. Moses Byxbe of

Berkshire County, Mass., purchased 8,000 acres here. Most came from Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The original Berkshire Township was founded in 1806 and included parts of Brown, Kingston, Berlin, Orange, Genoa, Trenton and Sharon townships. The pres-ent township was formed around 1821.

Genoa TownshipJeremiah Curtis of Hartford, Conn.,

was the first settler here in 1804. In 1816, when the new Genoa was sectioned from Harlem Township, Elisha Bennett named this township after Genoa, Italy.

Most settlers came here from Pennsylvania and New York and were farmers and keepers of sheep. “Big Belly,” later known as Big Walnut Creek, was a mill site.

Harlem TownshipNamed by Dutch settlers for Harlem,

N.Y., and Harlem in the Netherlands, this township was formed from Sunbury Township in 1810. Benjamin Cook bought 4,000 acres for 42 cents per acre.

Centerville (Center Village) was laid out in 1848 and contained 150 residents by 1880. The smaller town of Harlem was platted in 1849 and contained only 50 resi-dents in 1880.

Kingston TownshipMost likely named after Kingston

Township in Pennsylvania, Kingston became a township in 1813. Settlers came from Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Presbyterians raised money to build a frame church in 1827; it became known as Old Blue Church and was the center of township activities for many years.

Porter TownshipThis township, formed between 1826

and 1827, received its name from Robert Porter of Philadelphia, who was awarded acreage by President John Adams for mili-tary services.

Congress granted a section of land to the United Brethren Society for the pur-pose of propagating the gospel. The com-munities of East Liberty and Olive Green are located in this township.

Trenton Township Between 1830 and 1835, what

had been Sunbury Township became Trenton Township (named for Trenton, N.J.). The first settlers arrived from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York and Kentucky.

The communities of North Condit, Condit Station and South Condit call Trenton Township their home.
