ALL eyes were on her the moment she stepped inside the room. Exuding confidence and grace, she was

everything one would expect from a world-class beauty queen. And when she began talking, everyone was rendered speechless, as her clever, smooth answers showed the intellect behind that gorgeous smile. Indeed, it was truly befitting that Shamcey Supsup landed in the top five in what is probably the most prestigious of all the international beauty competitions, the Ms. Universe beauty pageant. This twenty-five-year-old, undeniably, has it all.

“When I first joined Bb. Pilipinas, it was really a challenge,” Shamcey shared, “It was also a request by my mom.” One of Shamcey’s responsibilities as Bb. Pilipinas was to represent the country in the Ms. Universe pageant - of which, she returned home as the third runner-up.

A magna cum laude graduate of the University of the Philippines Diliman with a degree in Architecture, Shamcey also topped the Architecture Licensure Examination held last year. Before moving to Manila for high school, Shamcey spent her younger years in General Santos City. She admitted that though she cannot speak Bisaya, she understands it perfectly.

Shamcey has all the makings of a superstar, and many have often wondered how soon it will be before she officially joins show business. To that, the beautiful young architect easily replied, “I want a career in architecture, definitely.”

In fact, Shamcey has been chosen as one of the architects to be part of the rehabilitation board for the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Her dream project though is to design a bridge, she said, “I’m really fascinated by them.”

When asked about her dream home, Shamcey said that what she wants is something “simple” and “small.” She continued, “I want it to be just what I need. I want every space to have character, and it must have a library.”

Despite being a fresh face in the celebrity world, Shamcey has not been spared from controversial issues brought about by the limelight. After she was hailed third runner-up of the Ms. Universe, Facebook was deluged with posts saying that Oprah ‘wanted Shamcey to win instead.’ That piece of information went viral, but was disproved eventually. It was a hoax, and from the start, Shamcey herself didn’t even believe it. Her initial reaction being, “Is it true?”

And of course, there are individuals who are wary of beauty competitions in general. “I respect them,” Shamcey said, “that’s what I learned from Ms. Universe. We are from different cultures, different beliefs… and the only way to be at peace is to understand that we are different.”

One of the socio-civic activities that Shamcey has been part of is Coffee Dream’s ‘Your Piso, My Dream’ campaign, which she helped launch last week at Coffee Dream’s newest branch in Arcena Estate. The chosen beneficiaries of this activity are the cancer-stricken children of the KITE Foundation. For every purchase at Coffee Dream, one peso will be given to the said foundation.

With several remarkable accomplishments under her name, would you still find it in you to crack jokes at her last name? Shamcey said that when she was younger, that used to bother her, but as she grew older, she learned to ignore the people who did that, to the point that she even pities them.

The beauty queen then recalled an incident. When she was applying for her driver’s license, the people in the room laughed when the attendant called her name, ‘Supsup!’. With a self-assured smile, she added, not without some modesty, “But when I stood up, they all fell silent.” When seeing Shamcey’s beauty and poise, being rendered speechless is probably an understatement.

Award-winning British singing quartet, Blake, was in the country the past weekend for a series of shows at the Ayala Malls. Blake’s mall tour kicked off at the Greenbelt 5 Gallery in Manila last October 21 and culminated at the Ayala Terraces Cebu last Sunday, October 23.

Composed of four members, Ollie Blaines, Stephen Bowman, Jules Knight, and Humphrey Berney, Blake is a pop-classical group known for their harmonious renditions of modern pop hits such as Snow Patrol’s ‘Chasing Cars’ and U2’s ‘With or Without You.’

Blake is said to have been ‘formed’ via the social networking site Facebook. One of the members, Ollie, sent a private message to his friends asking if they wanted to form a singing group. It didn’t take long before Jules and Stephen responded, and the rest, as they say, is history.

The members, who had been choristers when they were younger, said that they had “no specific ambition” of turning it into a career. They just wanted an avenue where they could sing. But two days after their first meeting, Universal Classics signed them to a contract.

Blake’s first album was released in 2007. It was

No.1 in the UK Classical Album Charts and won Album of the Year at the Brit Awards.

“It’s very nice to be here,” said Jules. “Some of our fans in the UK might be slightly worried that we might not come back because we’re enjoying it here,” he said lightheartedly. Blake has performed all over the world: in Australia, Japan, and Scandinavia to name a few. Last weekend was their first time to visit the Philippines; the boys shared that they had enjoyed their stay here thanks to the tropical weather and to the Filipinos’ hospitality.

The members got the name ‘Blake’ from English poet William Blake who wrote the words to one of their favorite classics songs, ‘Jerusalem.’ “We wanted a very British sounding name, and something easily recognizable,” the members added.

Blake is also known for singing the original composition “All of Me,” which was dedicated to Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, on their wedding. Jules had attended St. Andrew’s University with the royal couple.

The group is currently working on their fourth album, which they describe to be “very contemporary.” The album is scheduled to be released in May of 2012.

movies

The “Shrek” movies may not even exist as far we’re concerned in “Puss in Boots,” which is fine, because they just kept getting worse; last year’s

“Shrek Forever After,” in 3-D, felt especially flat. But the franchise reboots anew here, if you’ll pardon the pun, with great energy, creativity and aplomb.

This spin-off is actually a prequel, providing the origin story of the diminutive, swashbuckling kitty voiced with great charisma, as always, by Antonio Banderas. The role has been an ideal showcase for Banderas to have a little fun with his suave, sophisticated image; he revels in Puss’ playfulness and faux bravado as well as his genuine courage and heart.

At the film’s start, Puss is an outlaw in his own small, Spanish hometown. Flashbacks take us to his childhood at an orphanage, where he was best friends with a brainy, ambitious Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis). Together, the two dreamed of stealing the magic beans, climbing the beanstalk and getting rich off some golden eggs. Now, that crime has become Humpty’s obsession; he tries to enlist Puss as the brawn of the operation, which would allow both to enjoy some redemption.

Humpty’s partner in this caper is the dangerous master thief Kitty Softpaws, voiced with slinky seduction by Banderas’ frequent co-star, Salma Hayek. It’s a clever collaboration that doesn’t feel like stunt casting, as is the case with many animated films; they’re so good together after so long, it just makes sense.

But since Puss is a lover as much as he’s a fighter, you know he’ll find a way to win her over -- and there is definitely a Pepe LePew vibe to the way they flirt with each other. A dance-off between the two characters early on, when Kitty is still disguised and Puss is unaware she’s a woman, is both exquisitely choreographed and hilariously funny.

The Puss in Boots character eventually felt like the best part of the “Shrek” movies, but a little of him goes a long way. Giving him an entire movie of his own would seem like a stretch, and really, he has trouble sustaining his shtick for the film’s 90-minute running time. But for quick, lively, family friendly entertainment, “Puss in Boots” works just fine, even in 3-D, which is integrated thoughtfully into the narrative and doesn’t just feel like a gimmick. Through chases, swordfights, dance sequences and even a flight into the clouds, the 3-D consistently provides a feeling of propulsive motion. (The glasses are still clunky and uncomfortable, but that’s another conversation for another time.)

Puss looks so soft and fluffy and tactile in his little, leather boots, his jaunty, feathered hat and his shiny sword, you’ll want to reach out and pet him -- especially when he’s a tiny kitten working those big, green eyes for maximum manipulative effect. But just as impressive is the way the film from director Chris Miller (“Shrek the Third”) gives detailed expression and personality to a talking egg. Merely the idea that Humpty Dumpty might be a criminal mastermind is good for a laugh, but Galifianakis infuses the character with a healthy mix of neediness and megalomania. He gets so into the character, you might not even realize it’s him under that shell until the credits roll.

The same is true of Jack and Jill, who are depicted as greedy and fearsome and are voiced with complexity (and perfect Southern twangs, naturally) by Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris. Their relationship reflects the best of what the “Shrek” movies have offered over the years: an unexpected twist on the fairy tales you know and love.

Thankfully there’s a lot more of that kind of inspired writing -- and not nearly so many pop-culture references and Hollywood in-jokes -- this time around. Puss likes to dance, but he never does the Macarena.

Kelly Clarkson has been wowing audiences with her powerful voice since she burst onto the scene as the first “American Idol” winner a decade ago. Since then, the dynamic singer has sold millions by making female empowerment anthems her mantra, from booming pop-rock songs that call for women to stand up for themselves to finger-wagging tunes that tell not-good-enough men that they’re not good enough.

Clarkson’s fifth studio album, “Stronger,” addresses the same issues with a “richer and fuller” sound than usual: Clarkson said she wanted to sound like she does when performing live, without employing any of the modern day tuning aides. The result is a more natural sound that allows her already explosive voice to bloom even more.

The record is full of danceable tracks that just won’t budge from your humming repertoire. Whether it’s pop, rock, 1980s riffs or electro streaks, “Stronger” has all the

ingredients for a well-balanced offering. Clarkson worked on the eclectic record with a variety of A-list producers such as Rodney Jerkins, Greg Kurstin, Josh Abraham, and Toby Gad. She also co-wrote five of the album’s tracks.

First single “Mr. Know It All” hits all the right notes by going for the jugular, with lyrics like “You ain’t got the right to tell me/ When and where to go,” and “Mr. Bring me down/ Well ya like to bring me down don’t ya/ But I ain’t laying down.” Along the way, her unstoppable voice channels Bonnie Tyler and Tori Amos in “Honestly,” which urges for complete disclosure (even if the truth hurts); “I Forgive You” and “You Can’t Win” sound like they

were made for the soundtrack of an adorable rom-com.Only Clarkson can beguile with a ballad like “Dark Side,”

half music box chimes, half pop anthem. “Everybody has a dark side/Do you love me?/Can you love mine?” After a listen to “Stronger,” the answer is a definitive “yes.”

For nearly three decades, Terry Pratchett has enthralled millions of fans worldwide with his irreverent, wonderfully funny satires set in the fabulously imaginative Discworld, a universe remarkably similar to our own. From sports to religion, politics to education, science to capitalism, and everything in between, Pratchett has skewered sacred cows with both laughter and wisdom, and exposed our warts, foibles, and eccentricities in a unique, entertaining, and ultimately serious way.

At long last, Lady Sybil has lured her husband, Sam Vimes, on a well-deserved holiday away from the crime and grime of Ankh-Morpork. But for the commander of the City Watch, a vacation in the country is anything but relaxing. The balls, the teas, the muck—not to mention all that fresh air and birdsong—are more than a bit taxing on a

cynical city-born and -bred copper. Yet a policeman will find a crime anywhere

if he decides to look hard enough, and it’s not long before a body is discovered, and Sam—out of his jurisdiction, out of his element, and out of bacon sandwiches (thanks to his well-meaning wife)—must rely on his instincts, guile, and street smarts to see justice done. As he sets off on the chase, though, he must remember to watch where he steps. . . . This is the countryside, after all, and the streets most definitely are not paved with gold.

Hailed as the “purely funniest English writer since Wodehouse” (Washington Post Book World), with a “satirist’s instinct for the absurd and a cartoonist’s eye for the telling detail” (Daily Telegraph, London), Terry Pratchett offers a novel of crime, class, prejudice, and punishment that shows this master at his dazzling best.

Attend Halloween Parties – Have your most glamorous Halloween outfits ready and hit up the top party places in Cebu. In the ‘Weekend Glee’ section, there’s a list of the best Halloween parties happening this weekend. Check out the calendar a.s.a.p. as some of the parties are happening tonight!

Chilling Cinematic Experience – Okay, so that was just a fancy way of saying to have a movie marathon, with scary movies, of course! No, the Scary Movie series does not count. I’m referring to spine-chilling films that will certainly render you sleepless for days. According to MSN Movies, the top three scariest films of all time are Night of the Living Dead (1968), Repulsion (1965), and Psycho (1960). Make sure you have companions when you watch these though!

Creepy Cuisine – Express your kitchen creativity this weekend by making delish Halloween treats like Witch Fingers, Ghoulish Gunk, Mummy Dogs, Ghostly Brownies, and Spider Jelly. You can find the recipes for these Halloween treats at activityvillage.com!

Be a Prankster – Aside from April Fool’s Day, Halloween is perhaps the other time of the year where it’s excusable to play pranks. Dress up as a mad villain and give your neighbor a ‘good scare.’ By good, I mean that you shouldn’t do anything drastic, illegal, or anything that can possibly give your victim a nasty shock.

Those weren’t so difficult now, where they? Whatever you decide doing on Halloween, just make sure you’ll have fun with it. Cheers! Or should I say, ‘Booo!’

Bloodcurdling Bartending – Welcome the midnight by partying with a cocktail drink in hand. Check out the recipes cocktails drinks like Blood and Sand, Corpse Reviver, and Blood Sipper. Don’t led the morbid names fool you, these drinks will definitely be a delight to your taste buds.

I had a dream a few days back, and it was a bit like a dark fairy tale. At the centre of it was an insecure young girl who wanted, more than anything, to be a princess on Halloween night. But she looked nothing like a princess, and she did not want to risk being the laughingstock of her peers, so she decided to stay home the night of the Halloween Ball.

But All Hallows’ Eve had other plans for her, and that same night, there was someone at the door. There at her doorstep stood a Prince of Darkness. Though she did not see him at all, only his extended hands, she knew without seeing that it was indeed a Prince, and that he was offering her a gift.

He offered her a costume, a princess costume. But this was no ordinary costume; it was a REAL Princess costume. Because that was the true way to do things on Halloween night, said the Prince. You did not dress like someone else. You BECAME someone else.

And of course the young girl took his gift, and she turned into a Princess. And the world fell away, and she found herself in the Dark Prince’s kingdom, and the last thing I saw before I woke up was him asking her to dance.

I cannot be presumptuous and say she met a bad end, or if it was otherwise, although I am much inclined to believe the former. Neither am I sure if there was any real point to the story, except this interesting concept: What if the Prince’s words rang true and Halloween was that one night on earth when you had to become somebody else? What

if donning a costume meant transforming completely into the chosen character, without having any of its (possibly) horrific deeds etch in your memory afterwards? Who would you choose?

Perhaps there would be two kinds of characters most apt if such a night should come- the character you have always aspired to become and the character you fear the most. Oddly though, I would think that the two may overlap to some degree. There is, after all, a dark side to every storybook character (just as in real life), and one never really knows if the fairy godmother actually poisoned the apple, or if the Prince wasn’t, in fact, the Witch’s sex slave, summoned to lure the Princess into a trap or slay an innocent dragon.

On the other hand (or perhaps even the same one) a huge part of the reason we instinctively detest or fear a character is because we see too much of ourselves in them. Somewhere deep down, we sense that if circumstances had been slightly different, Dr. Jekyll could’ve been Mr. Hyde. It is seeing in a subconscious mirror the distorted image of ourselves that scares us the most.

And so, my dearly beloved ladies and gents- I dare you, this coming Fright Night. I dare you to come as your greatest fear- your own grotesque reflection. I dare you to let it seep into your very being- and you will be more frightening than you ever have been.

Oh, and do try to remember- change back when the Night is over.

All Hallows’ Dreams

Crepe de la crepe

I’ve always believed there is always something new to be learned, and last October 11, a Tuesday, I learned something new. As a food writer, I’m usually invited to food tasting events, and this time, I went to the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino to meet their new pastry chef Daniel Lajoux. Little did I know that I was going to be asked to assist in making crepes that day.

I’m sure that most everyone know what a crepe is, but I’m betting that the kind of crepe you know is the French version: delicately thin, with a filling of fruit, some whipped cream, powdered sugar and some Nutella, which is an Italian chocolate/hazelnut spread. Chef Daniel, with the help of food columnist Aissa dela Cruz, set out to make this kind.

I was teamed up with Waterfront Cebu City general manager Alfred Portenschlager, who hails from Austria. Our team was supposed to make Austrian-style crepes, and believe me, it’s a lot harder than making those elegantly thin French pancakes.

With two teams going at it, it was a friendly competition between a Frenchman and an Austrian and two local food enthusiasts, with an Englishman, Waterfront Food & Beverage Manager Alistair Granger acting as the arbiter.

With our ingredients (egg whites, egg yolks, rum, raisins, flour, sugar,

salt, butter and a little water) in place, Alfred and I started. First, I had to beat the egg whites until they were foamy and firm enough to stay inside the bowl even when turned upside down. As I was doing this, Alfred mixed the ingredients together, with the two of us taking grappa shots every time a step was completed.

When the batter was mixed, we lit our stoves and heated our pans, and started making the crepes. Unlike the French version, Austrian crepes are pretty fluffy, much like a soufflé, and very much like the soufflé, the crepes are supposed to be served while they are still puffed up. Served with a sprinkling of powdered sugar, I helped the waiters distribute the crepes to our merienda companions, among them Mrs. Nelia Neri and Ms. Cookie

Newman, my colleagues at Sun.Star.As I said, it was sort of a

competition, but in truth, both teams won, as everyone that afternoon judged the contest a tie. And yes, I learned several things: there’s such a thing as Austrian crepes; and yes, they’re just as good as French crepes.

Another thing I learned: never take six grappa shots in a row on an empty stomach, but that’s another story.
