Sun Safety Tips for UV Safety Month

Summer is the season for beach trips, backyard barbeques, and picnics in the park. When you're enjoying the great outdoors this summer, be sure to protect your skin. UV radiation is the leading cause of skin cancer and can also cause wrinkles, eye problems, and a weakened immune system. In honor of UV Safety Month, we're sharing our top sun safety tips to protect your skin.

Opt for the Shade Avoid or limit your sun exposure when the UV index is at its highest. UV is greatest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Apply Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen of 30 SPF or higher. Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.

Wear Protective Clothing

Shield your skin by wearing lightweight protective clothing, preferably long sleeve shirts and pants. Protect your scalp and face with a broad-brimmed hat.

Protect Your Eyes

UV rays not only damage your skin; they can cause vision problems, including cataracts and macular degeneration. To protect your eyes, wear a wide-brimmed hat to shade your face and eyes, as well as wrap-around sunglasses that block 100% of UV rays and absorb most HEV rays.

Don’t Be Fooled By Clouds

You need to be proactive about sun protection every day, including when it's cloudy. UV rays can penetrate through clouds and haze. Sun damage can occur any time of year, not just in the summer.
