Roger and Rebecca take a quick seat and a warm smile.

In a song by one of my favorite bands, The Afghan Whigs, they ponder “the things a mind can do to

you.” Along with all the creative and bright things the mind is capable of, it can also turn any encounter

into a stressful mess. Life is unpredictable, and when an unexpected circumstance arises, we have a

tendency to label it as bad. However, it’s entirely possible that the only truly “bad” part of what’s

happening is simply our own mind projecting into the future, layering on all the potential negatives. In

essence, we create our own suffering. If, instead, we strip away repeated thoughts about past events

and repeated fears of the future, we can rest easily and safely in the moment.

Daily life can be stressful enough. If you’re taking a walk

with a friend right now, does it make much sense to be

worrying about a meeting at work next week? It probably

won’t help you prepare for the meeting, but more

importantly, you’ll miss out on enjoying the moment with

your friend. Once the walk is over, you can then take your

cleared and relaxed mind home to sit down and fully

prepare for the meeting, having given both your full

attention.

Eckhart Tolle says, “You can always cope with the present

moment, but you cannot cope with something that is only

a mind projection - you cannot cope with the future.”

Everything that’s not present is a collection of memories that form the past and visions that imagine the

future. And all of this exists in our own heads. If we are always thinking about the past or the future, we

are ignoring the reality of what is in front of us at this moment, and in so doing, we are invariably missing

out on rich opportunities. It’s as if we are fighting reality, and it’s a battle we can’t win.

Yoga asana is one way to practice drawing attention to the present moment or experience, whatever it

may be. For example, next time you practice triangle pose, notice how your legs ground you to the

earth. Notice how your breath moves through your body. Notice the twisting of your belly and the

opening of your chest. Do all this without concern for the way triangle post may have felt last week, or

what you hope it will look like next year, or what you think is “wrong with you” that prevents you from

doing it the way you want to. In this way, the yoga mat becomes a laboratory for awareness. The more

you practice being present, the more present you will be. As often as necessary, remind yourself to

unconditionally embrace the wonder and opportunity that each moment holds.

To express our gratitude

for 20 years in the

business of providing a

sanctuary of healing and

community in Northern

Virginia, we are pleased

to announce a

community partnership

with Doorways for

Women and Families. For

35 years, Doorways for

Women and Families has

been helping families to

lead safe and stable lives

by creating pathways out

of domestic violence and

homelessness. For the

duration of our year-long

celebration we’ll be

offering lots of ways to

help this fine organization

do its good work.

We are in service.

&Shining Bright for Twenty Years

We are connection. We are community. We are grateful.

We continue to share stories.

Yoga has changed a lot since the early 90’s, when you could count on one hand the number of yoga studios in the DC metro area. Many (repeat, many) studios have come since then, and a quite a few have come and gone, but the ones who were

there to begin with are here now, and we’re proud to be among them. The credit goes not to any one personality, or any one teacher. We intend this celebration to be about the people who show up for practice week after week, year after year. The people who open themselves up to us, mind, body, and soul, and allow us to share yoga as the magnificent healing tool that it is.

Watch our e-news, website, Facebook and Twitter for stories, photos,

videos and more 20th anniversary excitement!

@sunandmoonyoga#yogashiningbright

It was a bad combination: my child in the thrall of the “terrible twos” and

my body entering menopause – with hot flashes and surges of anger. A

lighted sign began flashing in my mind: “YOGA…YOGA…YOGA.” A friend

told me a studio had just opened. I think I was student number 78. Every

class, I felt better when I left than I had when I entered. I took Level 1 until

my teacher insisted it

was time to move up,

eventually tackled

inversions, enrolled in

teacher training,

became a teacher

myself. For 20 grateful

years, Sun & Moon has

been my yoga home.

~ Enid Kassner, Senior

Faculty, Sun & Moon

Instructor since 1999

I LOVE yoga & have Sun & Moon Yoga

Studio to thank for this gift! My first

class was in 2008. I was an injured

runner with absolutely no yoga

experience. Everything about the

studio kept me coming back – the

instructors, staff, space, and how

amazing I felt after class. Fast forward

to 2014 – I live in Connecticut, and as

a graduate of the Sun & Moon In-

Depth 200-Hour Teacher Training, now

share this gift of yoga with others. I am

forever grateful to the studio, to Annie

and Amir, and to all my instructors for

setting me on this path. ~ Kris Healy,

All make-ups must be taken during the quarter for which you are registered; they may not be carried over to the next quarter.

REFUND AND CREDIT POLICYKeeping in mind our liberal make-up policy, we understand that life circumstances sometimes get in the way, and yoga has to wait. If you decide you must ask for a credit or a refund, they are available for the number of classes remaining in the quarter, based on the date we receive your request (not the date you last attended). Therefore, please fill out a refund/credit request form as soon as you know you can no longer attend your classes. Refunds will incur the following administrative fees: $20 for classes or 10% the cost of a workshop. Refunds by check may take up to 3 weeks to process; refunds by credit card may take up to one week. Letters of Credit are valid for one year from the date issued, and incur no administrative fee. Letters of Credit apply to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash or merchandise. Workshop refunds or letters of credit are available up to the day before the event. No refunds or credits are given the day of or after the workshop.

WHAT TO WEAR AND OTHER USEFUL INFORMATIONWear comfortable “work-out” clothes; nothing too baggy so teachers can see your alignment. We practice barefoot and keep our floors clean; leave your shoes in the cubbies before entering the yoga rooms. We have men’s and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry. For your safety, leave valuables locked and hidden in your car. Cell phones must be silenced; for the benefit of all, we strongly discourage cell phones in the yoga room. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class or studio.

EMERGENCY CLOSINGSClasses cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergency will not be re-scheduled, but may be made up in any other class during the quarter. During severe weather conditions or other emergencies, we will post all cancellations on the studio website and on the outgoing voicemail at 703.525.9642.

Do You Have a Yoga Memory to Share?

We’ll be sharing lots of stories all year long as part of our 20th anniversary celebration. If you have a yoga moment that lives in your memory as

sweet, moving, or transformational, and if Sun & Moon was part of that moment, we’d love hear from you. Would you, could you, share with us, in written form (100 words or less) or video form (from your own camera or ours – two minutes or

less)? Send your story or your questions about it to [email protected]
