    Last April, a group from clubiof the Los Angeles Metropolitan District, California Fed-eration of Women s Clubs,toured Sun City. A report tothe Federation by its Geron

    tology chairman, Mrs. Palm-berg, makes interesting reading . . . most of this report isreprinted on the inside pagesof this issue. By late Instmonth, seven similar tours byCalifornia groups had beenscheduled for the 1961-62season, three by Woman sClubs. Corye l l , who engineered th i s wonder fu ltour, toge ther wi th Mr. L a w r e n c e , the R e t i r e m e n tH o u s i n g r e p r e s e n t a t i v e of the Del E. We b b C o r p o r at ion , and his s e c r et a r y, w h o m we affect ionately cal led" C h a r l o t t e . "

    I t was C h a r l o t t e w h o a r r a n g e d for our c o m f o r t andc o n v e n i e n c e . On the bus , she was pass ing up-a nd-do wnall day, serving coffee and coffee-cake, or soft drin ks,a n d at n o o n a box l u n c h de l u x e u n H k e any boxl u n c h I have ever ea ten .

    O u r a c c o m m o d a t i o n s in the Del We b b H i w a y H o u s ei n P h o e n i x w e r e c o m m o d i o u s , two in a r o o m . D i n n e rtha t even ing was se rved in the b a n q u e t r o o m of them o t e l an d it was , indeed , a b a n q u e t . We w e r e e n t e rtained with the s h o w i n g of a film called The Beg inn i n g . " It w a s a b o u t an e lder ly ge n t lema n, who , a fte r 30years of fai thful serv ice was given an engraved wr i s tw a t c h by his com pan y, s ign i fy ing " t ime on his h a n d s . "

    At last the long-awai ted per iod of t i m e had c o m eHe could en joy "do ing no th ing" to his hear t ' s con ten t .

    At first it was fun, but, as you can guess , he was verys o o n b o r e d and lone ly, and longed to be b a c k at workaga in . Then he h e a r d of Sun C i ty, p lanned for act iveret irees l ike himself, and w h e n he and his wife visitedsome f r iends there , they found m any mo re congen ia lfr iends and mo re in te res t ing th ings to do than theycould have imagined . And so they dec ided to buy ah o m e in Sun C i ty.

    miles f rom Ph oenix , to see for ourse lves how it wasopera ted . We were d r iven th rough the spac ious g roundsof beau t i fu l homes in a cou ntry -clu b set t ing, with golfcourse , swimming pools , l awn bowl ing , e tc . , and on toa comple te shopping cen te r. We w e r e let off at the ar tsand c ra f t s cen te r, and w a l k e d t h r o u g h h o b b y r o o m s ,c lub rooms , pa t ios , c lub lounge , k i t chen , and town ha l l .Af te r tour ing the s ix model homes , we were re tu rned tothe pa t io of t h e S u n C i t y C o m m u n i t y H o u s e , w h e r e wewere se rved a mos t de l ic ious ca te red lunc heon , the c lub

    day seems l ike a d rea m. We were d r iven all a r o u n d a n da b o u t P h o e n i x and the in te res t ing and historica l pla cesp o i n t e d out to us. We toured the S ta te Univers i ty andMesa and then Sco t t sda le . We go t o ut at Sco t t sda le , theWest ' s mos t Wes te rn town, and peep ed into Lul u Bell 'sd imly lit, o ld - t ime sa loon , where we were sure we sawshadowy figures of the Old We st s ti l l lur king .

    Then we were d r iven to the fabu lous Mou nta in Shadow s Inn, loca ted in the p u r p l e s h a d o w s of the C a m e l -b a c k M o u n t a i n s . In this luxu riou s al l-year resort , withi t s whi te -and-go ld lobby, its magni f icen t loung e , andspac ious d in ing room, we were se rved a l u n c h e o n fitfo r a queen ' s t as te : an exotic frui t salad served in ha lvesof scooped-o ut f resh p ineap ple , topped wi th s t raw berries and w h i p p e d c r e a m and F rench pas t r i es fordessert . In Parad ise Val ley there were many morebeautiful things to see, inc lud ing a t o u r of gorgeousm o d e l h o m e s in Mo on V al ley.

Thef i r s t sec t ion , which was comple ted June , 1 9 6 1 , consistsof 1,400 hous ing un i t s , now hous ing 3,000 ind iv idua ls ,al l ci t izens 5 0 y e a r s of age , or o l d e r. The c o m m u n i t ycen te r, the shopping cen te r, pa ved s t ree t s , u t i li t i e s , e tc .w e r e all c o m p l e t e d b e f o r e a s ing le house was so ld .

    T h e h o u s e s r a n g e in p r ice f rom 9 , 7 5 0 to 15 ,350 ,which may be f inanced on F H A t e r m s or c a s h . W h e n adivision has be en filled up the recr eatio nal faci l i t iesa re tu rned over to th e h o m e - o w n e r s , w h o e l e c t a b o a r do f m a n a g e r s a m o n g s t t h e m s e l v e s .
