After nineteen years together, six albums and hundreds of concerts, Sumrrá is a reference of
contemporary jazz and, undoubtedly, one of the most interesting trios on the Spanish jazz scene.
From its beginnings in the year 2000, Sumrrá captivated critics and audiences with an unclassifiable,
melodic and free jazz, highlighting the originality of its compositions, the quality of its members and
the freshness of its live performances.
Sumrrá is formed by the pianist Manuel Gutierrez, the bassist Xacobe Martínez Antelo and the
drummer L.A.R. Legido
Manuel Gutiérrez, self-taught pianist, take courses and seminars with Bill Dobbins, Dave Schnietter
and Barry Harris. With the Tandem project, he was a finalist in the XI International Festival of Getxo,
and between 1988 and 1993 he joined projects such as Jazztá, Sausalito Jazz Band and Salvador Font
"Mantequilla" Quinteto. He collaborates regularly with musicians and musics from all stylistic and
geographical latitudes.
Xacobe Martínez Antelo was self-taught and eclectically since he was thirteen, interested in rock,
blues, world music and jazz. He participated in recordings of over thirty albums and is currently one
of the most prolific and versatile figures of Galician jazz.
Drummer L.A.R Legido studied with Pedro López, Belma Muñor, Markus Breuss and Wade
Matthews, with improvisation as his main focus of action and research. He collaborated with various
artists and projects, approaching styles that range from folk and flamenco, through improvisation and
jazz. He participated in numerous festivals in Europe, America and Africa.
Currently these three magnificent musicians have built a proposal of the most solid, with a unique,
original, creative music and specially with a lot of freedom and improvisation. As Xacobe Martínez
Antelo points out, "The truth is that we do not have any pre-established model ... Our way of working
occurs in the composition itself ... and that leads to the development of the group, our collective roles
and sound."
In their concerts they present a truly own and characteristic sound, full of strength and drama,
accompanied by large doses of technique, lyricism, swing and even humor.
In addition to the large number of concerts held in Galicia and the rest of the Iberian Peninsula,
Sumrrá has also received a great response internationally in its many tours: Bolivia, Portugal,
Bulgaria, France, Morocco, South Korea, South Africa, Mexico , Guatemala, El Salvador, China,
Nicaragua...
