5th edition of the eNorth East

Summit 2014 was held on

November 7, 2014 at Aijal Club &

Conference Hall, Assembly

Secretariat, Aizawl, Mizoram. The

ICT for Development programme

was organized by Department of

Information Communication

Technology (DICT) (Govt. of Mizoram) and North East Development Foundation and co-

organised by Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) and Public Interest Registry (PIR).

The programme was scheduled

into three power knowledge

workshops, the Digital

innovations showcasing, and

the 5th eNorth East Award

2014 Gala evening. Apart from

guest and invited speakers, 51

innovators and best

practitioners from the North

East India region whose IT/ICT

applications and innovations

have impacted the common

people and sectoral changes

including education, health, and citizen services delivery were invited to share their ideas

and innovations. These 51 innovators are also the finalists of the 5th eNorth East Awards

2014. Winners were declared and felicitated on Nov 7 evening during award gala.

The event (considered as India’s biggest ICT for Development programme in North East

India), was organized by Department of Information Communication Technology, Govt. of

Mizoram and North East

Development Foundation. Other

The theme of this year 5th eNorth East Award Summit 2014 was – ‘Digital Innovations for

Citizen Services in North East India’. This year some of best minds from North East and

mainstream India threw new light and perspective on the role of Pro-active Digital

Inclusion approach and programmes for inclusive growth and development in North East

India and thereby linking better connectivity and networking, with inclusive social and

economic Development with mainstream India and rest of the world.

The focus of the Workshop 1 was on ‘DIGITAL INNOVATIONS FOR CITIZEN SERVICES DELIVERY

IN NORTH EAST’ on Nov 7 had key case study presentations on ICT usage in citizen services

delivery from the region and mainland India. A total of 17 presentations were lined up on

best practices. The focus was on citizen participation and user satisfactions. The role of e-

infrastructure in developing North East India was deliberated. Special invitees shared state

experiences. This plenary wass chaired by Mr. C. Lalhmachhuana, Secretary, IT, Mizoram.

The focus of the Workshop 2 was on ‘DIGITAL INNOVATIONS IN EDUCATION, LEARNING &

HEALTH,’ had key presentations on health services delivery in the region. A total of 16 best

practices were highlighted in this workshop. This plenary was chaired by Mr. R. Lalvena,

Secretary, Department of Education, Mizoram.

The Workshop 3 was on ‘DIGITAL INNOVATIONS IN LIVELIHOOD & ENTERPRISE, COMMERCE &

BUSINESS, CULTURE & HERITAGE, ENVIRONMENT & TOURISM, INCLUSION, NEWS & MEDIA,’ focused

on 19 key projects and innovative practices.

The climax of this programme was the 5th eNorth East Award

Summit 2014 Award Gala Evening on November 7 at 2:00 pm. The

Chief Guest and other dignitaries gave away eNorth East Awards

2014 to the winners and special mentions and emerging ICT State

of the Year. Altogether there were 18 winners, special mentions,

and finalists who were felicitated and awarded in 12 categories.

Chief Guest of this award gala evening was Mr. Lal Thanzara,

Honourable Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Minor

Irrigation Dept. and Information & Communication

Technology, Govt. of Mizoram. The Guest of Honour was Dr. B.

D. Chakma, Minister of State, Govt. of Mizoram.

The eNorth East Award Summit has been an annual feature (a flagship initiative of North

East Development Foundation (www.nedfindia.org), and Digital Empowerment Foundation

(www.defindia.org), since 2010. The objective of the Award is to create a knowledge

network of digital innovations and best practices in ICT for development in the region for

learning, sharing, exchanging and replication for wider development and good governance

purposes in the region.

The Award Summit is about scouting good practices in ICT for development & governance

in North East India. The focus is on citizen services delivery, health, education, livelihood,

enterprise promotion, and youth and women empowerment in the region. The first

edition of eNorth East Award Summit was held in 2010 in Assam. The second edition was

held in 2011 in Nagaland, the 3rd eNorth East Award Summit was held in Sikkim and the 4th

enorth East Award Summit in Arunachal Pradesh.
