The Jewish New Year is

upon us. Rosh Hashana is

September 6th-8th. Rosh

Hashanah (literally,

“Head of the Year”) is the

Jewish New Year, which

marks the beginning of a

10-day period of prayer,

self-examination and re-

pentance. Rosh Hasha-

nah is celebrated on the

first day of the Hebrew

month of Tishrei, which—

because of differences in

the solar and lunar calen-

dar—corresponds to Sep-

tember or October on the

secular calendar. Cus-

toms associated with the

holiday include sounding

the shofar, eating a round

challah, and tasting ap-

ples and honey to repre-

sent a sweet New Year.

helps keep your joints, tendons,

and ligaments flexible.

Have your eyes and hearing

tested. Even small changes in

sight and hearing may cause

you to fall. Always wear your

prescribed glasses or hearing

aids!

Find out about the side effects

of any medicine you take. If a

drug makes you sleepy or dizzy,

tell your nurse or doctor.

Get enough sleep. If you are

sleepy, you are more likely

to fall.

Limit the amount of alcohol you

drink. Even a small amount of

alcohol can affect your balance

and reflexes. Studies show that

the rate of hip fractures in older

adults increases with alcohol

use.

If you take care of your overall

health, you may be able to lower

your chances of falling. Most of the

time, falls and accidents don't "just

happen." Here are a few tips to help

you avoid falls and broken bones:

Stay physically active! Regular

exercise improves muscles and

makes you stronger. It also

In 1989, the National Honey Board

declared the month of September as

National Honey Month as a way to

promote the beekeeping industry,

beekeeping in the United States

and, of course, honey! While we all

know honey as Mother Nature’s

sweetener, the many uses of honey

is extensive. Take a look at some

favorite uses for honey outside of

the kitchen for proof!

Create a simple homemade face

wash by mixing a drop of honey

with warm water in your hand

and then rubbing the mixture

all over your face.

Relax in the tub by adding hon-

ey and olive oil to your bath

water for a moisturizing skin

conditioner.

Add honey, along with ginger

and lemon juice, to your tea or

oatmeal to help calm your

nerves. Some even say it can

help settle an upset stomach,

too.

Help nourish chapped lips by

combining honey, beeswax, ol-

ive oil and cocoa butter for a

homemade lip balm.

Help soothe your sore throat by

eating honey straight and let-

ting it slowly slide down your

throat for relief.

Speaking of different types of hon-

ey, be sure to educate yourself on all

the varieties, including clover, raw,

orange and organic, just to name a

few. Each one has its own unique

flavor. Which one is your favorite?

And while September isn’t exactly

the best time of year to plant flow-

ers, it’s never too early to start

planning for next spring. Start by

making plans to build your own bee-

friendly garden!

Thanks to its relaxing effects,

you are bound to have a health-

ier heart when you have a pet

cat.

Purring helps you heal faster. If

you have an injury and need to

mend your bones, petting a cat

and the sound of its purring

might help you heal faster.

September is National Happy Cat

Month. My family and I have a very

large maine coon cat, that we adore.

There are also some great physical

and psychological benefits to own-

ing a cat.

Cat Owners Have a Healthier

Heart Science reveals petting a

cat has real health benefits.

Having cats around can have

a dramatic impact on our mind-

sets. According to scientists, if

you spend anywhere from 15 to

30 minutes per day with your

cat — cuddling, playing or just

hanging out — your mood

might get a boost.

This month we are shining a spot-

light on our resident Juanita. She

has lived with us at Summit since

2012! Everyone will always describe

Juanita as humorous, easy going,

and cleaver. In her free time she

enjoys doing wordsearches, ceram-

ics, playing cards or games, attend-

ing bingo, and doing jigsaw puzzles.

Her family is her biggest life high-

light. She has two sons and a few

grand children that she loves to

spend time with. Another one of

Juanita’s favorite things is to trav-

el. She would take a cruise every

year to a different location. She

likes how everything is included in

your stay the most. Juanita’s favor-

ite place she has traveled is the Vir-

gin Islands or Barbados. She loved

the weather there and it was

breathtakingly beautiful.. If Juanita

could drink one beverage for the

rest of her life it would be a tie be-

tween Cherry Coke and Dr. Pepper

and if she were to have a movie

made of her life she would want

Whoopie Goldberg to play her; be-

cause of her humor and intelligence.

Juanita is also a big sports fan, her

teams are the Twins and the North

Stars. The greatest challenge

Juanita has had to overcome is loos-

ing loved ones. Her sister when she

was a child and her mother as an

adult. Her advice and moto is to ‘Let

things go and accept the things

you cannot change, change the

things you can.

of yourself, so you can help others.”

She says, “self care is most im-

happy to have Evonne as one of our

caregivers.

This month we are shining a spot-

light on one of our home health aid

advisors. Evonne has worked at

Summit for several years . Her fa-

number one priority is making sure
