From The Desk OfLibrary Services Director Elizabeth Goldman

Another year of summer reading is in full swing at Burbank Public Library. This year’s programs include the regular fare, much beloved by the community: children’s performers, outdoor concerts, and the chance to earn books just for reading and telling us about what you read. Additionally, we are trying out some new programming made possible by generous funding from the Friends of the Library.

The teens are designing and constructing three Little Free Libraries that will be installed at locations around Burbank later this summer. Little Free Libraries are part of an international movement to make books more accessible by setting up newspaper vending machine-like structures that are based on a “take a book, leave a book” principle. Books are free to keep; in return, borrowers are encouraged to leave behind books they no longer need so others may enjoy them. This project helps spread the joy of books and reading. In addition,

the teens will learn about the community so each little library will meet the needs of the people most likely to be using it in that neighborhood.

The Youth Services Department is hosting two one-week robotics camps this summer after the primary Summer Reading Program finishes up. These camps help the Library meet its goal of providing additional STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) opportunities and also give children the chance for a more in-depth learning experience at the Library. In turn, the smaller, more focused group lets us track whether learning goals have been achieved through participation.

This work is part of a major trend in library services (as well as the education and nonprofit sectors) called outcome-based planning and evaluation. This system allows us to quantify the work we do in terms

of the impact it has on the people who participate. Because the desired outcomes have been identified in advance, the programming itself becomes richer, resulting in a better experience for both staff and participants. Rather than simply tracking that 200 parents and children participated in a six-week session of baby storytime, for example, we can say that 80% of those parents developed a habit of reading to their children every day due to their participation. Suddenly the Library goes from being a nice service that does something good, but hard to explain, to being an institution that is making a real difference.

Please visit http://burbanklibrary.com/about/planning to learn more about the Library’s overall plans for the next three years. Thank you to the Friends for your continued support of initiatives that are helping the Library grow and serve the community.

Summer is almost here. When the days are a little longer and warmer, we tend to have a more relaxed state of mind. Do your reading choices reflect a lighter and more casual content? A good mystery or a travel book might hit the spot. The library or the Friends’ bookstore are places you should visit to make your summer complete

In the past, I would have given you the results of the Spring Book Sale. This is the first year in over 35 years that we did not have a sale. Most of you know that’s because we have been working on the new Central Friends’ Bookstore.

The Bookstore space has been painted and new carpeting installed. The shelving should be coming soon, and the new glass sliding door has yet to be installed. We have many books in the Friends’ storage area ready to fill the Store shelves.

We have started calling book sale volunteers to see if they are interested in working at the Bookstore. The exact date for the

opening is not set yet but we are hoping to open before the end of summer. Anyone interested in working at either the Central or the Buena Vista store must be a Friend and must be a part of the Burbank Volunteer Program. If you are not registered with BVP, pick up a packet at the Joslyn Center, do the paper work and be fingerprinted. When this is done, please call me at the Buena Vista Bookstore, 818-238-5635, or send an e-mail to [email protected]. You will need some training before you begin. When you notify the Friends, I will call you and set up a training schedule.

Nid Eesiriporn has done it again. She has donated the entire proceeds of her Tax Preparation to the Friends. Nid earned $15,822 dollars--the most ever! We thank her for generosity! What a wonderful Friend!

It is with sadness that I must report the resignations of three Executive Board members. Tom Carson, our Treasurer, is resigning after being Treasurer for 12 years. He will remain a Friend. He and his wife, Chris, are very active with the League of Women Voters. In fact, Chris, is the current President of the National League of Women Voters. Susan Miceli has served on the Board for the past 4 years. She started her affiliation with the library in the Literacy Program. Susan later became interested in selling books for the Friends on Amazon.

A MessageFrom The President...

Currently, she is in charge of donations/sorting at the Central Library and is a member of the new Central Library Bookstore Committee. Her mother is having major back surgery and Susan will be the primary caregiver which means moving to New Mexico. Stephen Cawelti has been on the Executive Board for several years. He has since become a partner in his law firm, which means spending more time at the office. Stephen is also on the Library Board and wants to get more involved with the planning for a new Central Library. He will remain a Friend.

The June Friends meeting will be the time for the election of new officers. My two terms (4 years) as President will end. I have learned a lot about the Friends and the community. It’s been a very busy time. I’ve met so many nice Friends and had so much help with book sales, community work and Friends’ activities. Thank you one and all. I know you will welcome our new President and be there to help any way you can. It’s been an honor to be your President. See you at the library.
