  • R.J. Reynolds “Arts for Academics”Magnet School for the Visual and Performing Arts

    R. J. Reynolds, Winston-Salem’s oldest continuously operating public high school, became an arts magnet school in 2007 when we received a $1.47 million federal grant to use the arts as a school reform model. Th e program, “Arts for Academics” creates an arts culture on the campus with 22 professional performances each year, 55 discrete arts classes, and an arts integration approach across the curriculum. Our magnet approach focuses on creativity, innova-tion, critical thinking, problem solving, communication and col-laboration. We believe our program addresses key areas of concern facing American public high schools and prepares students for life and work in the 21st Century. Our program is yielding impressive results and is earning national attention. In 2013-2014, Reynolds was named a John F. Kennedy Center School of Excellence in Arts Education, earned a Magnet School of America School of Distinction Award, and was ap-proached to become an A+ School as their secondary model. Since becoming a magnet school, Reynolds has a waiting list each year, has improved test scores in every subject area with increases be-tween 9 and 44 percent, has seen a 35+% drop in discipline refer-rals, and has improved the overall graduation rate 13%. Th e Reynolds student body is one of the most diverse in the county. Our 1700+ students come to us from the entire continuum of economic environments. While 45% of our students qualify for the free or reduced lunch program, other students come from extreme-ly advantaged backgrounds. Our demographics are 40% White, 40% Black, and 20% Asian, American Indian, or Hispanic. We fi ll over 1500 arts class seats everyday. In 2011 the federal funds supporting our initiative come to an end. We are able to deliver our programs for less than $100 additional per student per year. In order to sustain “Arts for Academics” and build upon our success, we rely on community partnerships, grants, and fundraising.

Can you help us sustain this successful program?

    • Partner with us to provide master classes or special arts experiences

    • Make a donation toward a particular program (Visual Arts, Graphic Arts Mac Lab, Orchestra, Band, Chorus, Piano, Guitar, Dance, Th eatre Arts, School-Wide Arts Magnet Program)

    • Become a volunteer at RJ Reynolds

If so, contact Karen Morris at [email protected] or write a check to “RJ Reynolds Arts for Academics Magnet High School” with the program you wish to support on the memo line. You may give checks directly to ushers during intermission or following the performance mail them to the school at 301 North Hawthorne Rd. Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
