Welcome to Grounds For Sculpture, a world of artistic wonder and natural beauty bursting with creativity and magical charm. In the fullness of summer it sizzles; in the ripeness of autumn it glows, and no matter when you come, you’re bound to find something that surprises, something that touches your heart, and something you’ll remember forever.

As always this season contains a rich and expanding mixture of sights, sounds, and activities both familiar and new. And the park continues to grow in what it has to offer you. We’re open later on Fridays and Saturdays this summer…till 10pm…so is Toad Hall through autumn. We’re building more culinary delights and entertainment down at the Gazebo. All five of our galleries hold fascinating exhibitions and new ones in the Museum, Domestic Arts Building, The Seward Johnson Center for the Arts and out in The Meadow will open in October. The four hedgerooms off the new East Gallery have been redesigned and re-populated with great works from the collection. The Epicurean Palette will be more splendid than ever. And throughout the coming months, new and fun programs like…a troupe of renaissance dancers, a Mad Hatter Tea Party, a Honey Harvest, and Tom Paxton in concert...will delight and join old favorites like…..our Summer Social, MM2 Dance, early music and storytelling festivals, pumpkin carving, and the annual GFS Iron Pour. All this will culminate right after Thanksgiving with the fabulous Lights On Weekend to kick-off three months of Winter Wonders at GFS.

But it’s hot out and the pool is open. So dive into this event guide and find all the ways we beckon you to come sip on summer and feast on fall at Grounds For Sculpture.

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Nestled in the heart of central New Jersey lies Grounds For Sculpture (GFS), a magical place where art and nature are always at play. At its core are more than 270 sculptures by renowned and emerging contemporary artists, each thoughtfully positioned on meticulously landscaped parklands full of thousands of exotic trees and flowers. It is a feast for the senses. The works, many of them monumental, include those of such distinguished artists as Clement Meadmore, Anthony Caro, Beverly Pepper, Kiki Smith, George Segal, Magdalena Abakanowicz, and Isaac Witkin. They join the enchanting works of our visionary founder Seward Johnson as well as many others by the finest up and coming artists of our time. Join us and discover the beauty, charm, whimsy, and inspiration that our 42 acres hold.

The collection and exhibits at Grounds For Sculpture contain art works that may be of a challenging, sensitive and/or mature nature. Please be aware and consult GFS staff for advice if you have specific concerns.

MEADOW EXHIBITIONSThe Meadow beckons you to its second major exhibition, this time a sumptuous feast and fantastical tapestry of “mythic” proportion. First we present THRE3 featuring the large steel sculptures of Bernar Venet, the industrial, but metaphorical metal forms of Patrick Strzelec, and the whimsical but thought-provoking images of “Punch” by Robert Taplin.

Now reach further back in time for Mythos, an exhibition revealing the explorations by seven artists into the imagination and mythmaking of humanity to explain our universe, condition, and plight, including works by Dana Stewart, Michele Oka Doner, Nina Levy, and Marshall Pels, as well as two models in the Museum by Athena Tacha and Bruce Lindsay, and Carlos Dorian’s Nine Muses in the Park. THRE3 and Mythos open October 20 and remain on exhibition through summer 2013.

MING FAY: Canutopia (thru February, 2013)The inaugural installation in our new 7,500 sq. ft. East Gallery features Ming Fay’s Canutopia, a lush and colorful playground for the senses—a one-of-a-kind botanical utopia filled with fantastic oversized plants, seeds, and vines that burst with colors you can almost taste.

SHARON ENGELSTEIN: True or False (thru October 8)In the Museum, experience Sharon Engelstein’s enormous, brightly colored, air-inflated sculptures, evocative organic forms made with the help of computer software, industrial nylon and her sewing machine.

WILLIE COLE: E Pluribus Unum (thru September 23)On the ground floor of the Domestic Arts Building, view work by internationally renowned NJ artist Willie Cole who transforms discarded consumer items into provocative, sometimes humorous works that are deeply layered with cultural and spiritual meaning.

ROBERT TAPLIN: Heaven, Hell, and the Life of Punch. In the Museum, experience three distinctive and deeply compelling installations by figurative sculptor Robert Taplin, each of which brim with references to contemporary life but are seen through the lens of ancient Roman creation mythology, Dante’s Inferno, or the 17th century Italian trickster Punch. Stunning imagery and brilliant commentary abound in this unique exhibition!

ISC 14TH ANNUAL OUTSTANDING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IN CONTEMPORARY SCULPTURE EXHIBITIONOn the ground floor of the Domestic Arts Building, come glimpse the future of contemporary sculpture as some of the most talented sculpture students, selected from more than 430 domestic and international art programs, exhibit their award-winning work in the 14th consecutive International Sculpture Center & GFS collaborative exhibition.

MARK PARSONS: Mapping Memories Artist-in-Residence Project.This complex installation on the Mezzanine of the Domestic Arts Building is part of the 2012 residency of artist Mark Parsons and conveys the full story of the concept, process, and fabrication of environment artwork that will be transferred to the grounds where nature will then transform it. The large, vibrant handmade paper sculpture, created by the artist and the GFS community, is surrounded by photos, videos, recorded interviews, and related works. In all, a fascinating insight to both process and product. Funded in part by Provident Bank Foundation.

IN OUR EDUCATION GALLERY

MEMBERS’ MUSINGSJuly 7–August 12This 3rd annual exhibition features artwork created by GFS members who, in addition to supporting the arts (and GFS), are also gifted artists. This diverse showcase is always a tantalizing eye-opener.

THE A-TEAM: GROUNDED IN ARTAugust 25–October 14View the intense and poignant works created by members of the A-TEAM Artists of Trenton, an artist cooperative based at the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK) that studies and practices weekly. These self-taught artists work in a wide variety of media and have powerful messages to deliver.

COLOR OF ART: CREATIONS FROM THE LOWER MERION COUNTY VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTERNovember 3–December 16This exhibition features sculpture, paintings, and ceramics by developmentally challenged participants in the Lower Merion Vocational Training Center’s art program. Vibrantly colored 2- and 3-dimensional pieces showcase both artistic quality and uniquely abled perspectives.

Ming Fay, master creator of Canutopia and art professor at William Patterson University, is a gifted lecturer. Grounds For Sculpture annually conducts over 500 tours led by highly skilled, trained docents. Free drop-in tours are regularly provided based on docent availability, April through October. Check our website for the exact schedule. Tours feature a sampling of works outdoors to introduce you to the park and equip you for your journey and may also include works on exhibit in our galleries. School group tours are free Tuesday-Friday with advance reservation. Special group tours can be scheduled for a modest fee and tour groups of 15 or more paid for in advance receive a discount. You can also “tour yourself” using our Site Map, Tree Tour brochure, and the Grounds For Sculpture App for smart phones. SHOFUSO JAPANESE TEA HOUSE (PHILADELPHIA, PA)October 9, 2012The exquisite Shofuso Japanese House and Garden is a traditional-style Japanese house and nationally ranked garden in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park that reflects the history of Japanese culture in Philadelphia. Participants will receive a guided tour of the house with its Hiroshi Senju murals, gardens, and magnificent Koi pond, and then participate in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Miller of Visions Photographic Workshops for a photo walk around Grounds For Sculpture’s 42 gorgeous acres. Miller will guide your photographic journey with pointers on composition and perspective and help you hone your photography skills to get the shot you want. BASTILLE DAYSaturday, July 14, 1–4pm

Vive la France! Come celebrate Bastille Day GFS-style with special tours of sculpture inspired by French Impressionists, while la musique of France floats throughout the park. Enjoy an assortment of wines and a Provencal picnic basket filled with delectable meats, cheeses and French bread from The Peacock Café. For the young at heart, a GFS face painting artiste will give you a faux mustache! Kids can build an Eiffel Tower from wire in a workshop just for them. Join in a family workshop using pastels to paint like an Impressionist. Weather permitting, participants will work en plein air (outdoors) just as Monet did in France! And there’s sure to be more pour vouz. Wear a beret and receive half price admission!

And there’s more. At Rat’s Restaurant, the celebration continues! Chef Shane Cash will serve a delectable, traditional Bastille Day dinner, and the party will continue with live entertainment and dancing in the Pavilion.

ISConnects is an exciting collaborative effort between the International Sculpture Center and other world-renowned organizations. Each ISConnects program features presenters that can include emerging and established artists, writers, academics and arts administrators, ISC Award winners, and other individuals with unique viewpoints on sculpture. “Transformative Vision,” a panel discussion moderated by Jon Lash of the Digital Atelier, will address how new technologies are changing traditional artist methodologies. THE AMERICAN TRAVELLING MORRICEThursday, August 2, 2pm, Free with park admission“The What?” you ask. Yes, the American Travelling Morrice (ATM) and it will bring luck and prosperity to GFS! Morris Dancing is rooted in English medieval street theatre. For centuries, white-clad “Morris” men have performed intricate patterns of the dance–ringing bells, clashing sticks, and waving handkerchiefs–in time to lively folk tunes played on accordion, fiddle, pipes, and tabor. Directing it all with comical grace is the “Fool”, whose antics amuse onlookers and harass dancers. Since 1976, the ATM has offered these authentic presentations of the Ritual Dances of the English Cotswolds throughout the Northeast and across the pond in England. Use the fun and quirky shapes of Sharon Engelstein’s inflatable sculptures (on exhibit in the Museum) as inspiration to create your own whimsical paper orbs. First, learn to make colorful handmade papers from natural fibers. Then, using various rotund objects as temporary bases, apply the paper to them to form a unique shape when it dries. Bruce will instruct students in the fascinating art of lost-wax bronze casting. Over the course of four weeks, participants will create small bronze sculptures using the work of Ming Fay, whose installation Canutopia is on exhibit in the new East Gallery, for inspiration. ARTIST-IN-THE-PARK WORKSHOP: PLASTER BANDAGE MASKSSaturdays, October 27, November 3 & 10, 12–4pm

Take part in this unique opportunity to work with Artist-in-the-Park Clifford Ward, an artist whose sculpture is located at GFS! Cliff will help students explore the different techniques used in making life masks. Participants will use their own faces to make the shell for the mask (non-toxic, hypoallergenic plaster bandage will be used). Learn to alter and creatively manipulate the material to make a finished product that resembles your face, but is also very different! Instruction in altering facial structures and characteristics will be taught, as well as construction of various head-dresses and adornments. THE IRON POUR AT GFSSaturday, November 3GFS began with the Johnson Atelier and its foundry pouring molten metals to create sculpture. Led by artists from the AbOmInOg International Arts Collective of Trenton, we keep the tradition alive using red-hot iron. You’re not just invited to watch, you’re invited to make your own iron art.

SCRATCH MOLD WORKSHOP (children under 14 must be accompanied by adult) Create your own iron artwork first by making a Scratch Mold. Learn this intuitive process of scratching unique designs into an 8 inch sand mold, from which you’ll create a plaque or medallion in a workshop suitable for students of any skill level. Each mold will later be cast with molten iron during the iron pour demonstration. At the end of the day, take home your one-of-a-kind art. IT’S GINGERBREAD TIME AT GFSSaturday, November 17Get set for a sweet day in the park with our annual Gingerbread house Demo and Workshop

GINGERBREAD HOUSE DEMONSTRATION, 12pm

First, join the master himself, pastry chef Peter Max Dierkes for a special “how to” gingerbread house demonstration and be amazed by his spicy sculptural techniques!

GINGERBREAD HOUSE WORKSHOP, 2pm

Then try your hand at this delicious edible holiday tradition. Combining gingerbread, frosting, candy, cookies and more, you’ll make your own one-of-a-kind house. Basics will be supplied. Participants should bring their own icing spatula, pastry decorating tips, and any special doo-dads you might put on the house. For ages 10 and up (young artists may require adult assistance). Once your house is done, enter it into the annual Gingerbread House Contest for the chance to win some pretty cool prizes, to be announced on November 24th at our annual Lights On Extravaganza. $30 members; $40 non-members (materials fee covers supplies for one house and decorations). Kick off the holiday season at Grounds For Sculpture! Join us for two days of merriment just after Thanksgiving. Music, performances, workshops, artisan crafts, holiday gifts, and more fill each day, and at sundown watch the park come ablaze with tens of thousands of lights. Stroll the paths as trees and buildings dazzle with holiday magic. Here’s a taste of what’s in store. On Saturday, create holiday-inspired origami ornaments; participate in a Graham Cracker House Workshop (Material Fees apply); see the award ceremonies of our 8th Annual Gingerbread House Contest; warm up with a holiday sing along. On Sunday, enjoy a special 11:00am brunch at The Peacock Café or an afternoon Holiday Tea Party from 4-6pm, savor your own little pot of holiday tea while snacking on a delicious selection of cookies, finger sandwiches and other special delights.
