Galileo Updates

The Digital Library of Georgia is pleased to announce the expansion of the South Georgia Historic Newspapers Archive:

The South Georgia Historic Newspapers Archive now provides access to nineteen newspaper titles published in twelve south Georgia cities (Albany, Americus, Bainbridge, Brunswick, Cairo, Cuthbert, Perry, Thomasville, Tifton, Valdosta, Vienna, and Waycross) from 1845 to 1923. Consisting of over 164,000 newspaper pages, the archive provides historical images that are both full-text searchable and can be browsed by date. The site is compatible with all current browsers and the newspaper page images can be viewed without the use of plug-ins or additional software downloads.

The archive now includes the following south Georgia newspaper titles: Houston Home Journal (Perry) (1870-1923) and Grady County Progress (Cairo) (1910-1917), in addition to the titles previously included in the archive: Albany Herald (1892-1893, 1900-1901, 1906), Albany News (1867-1892), Albany Patriot (1845-1866), Americus Times Recorder (1881-1921), Bainbridge Democrat (1872-1909), Bainbridge Search Light/Post-Search Light (1901-1922), Brunswick Advertiser/Advertiser and Appeal (1875-1889), Cuthbert Appeal (1866-1886), Sumter Republican (1870-1885), Tifton Gazette (1892-1919), Thomasville Times Enterprise (1873-1922), Valdosta Times (1908-1912), Vienna News (1902-1918), Vienna Progress (1893-1904), Waycross Headlight (1884-1887), Waycross Herald (1892-1914), and Waycross Journal (1901-1914).

The South Georgia Historic Newspapers Archive is a project of the Digital Library of Georgia, a part of Georgia’s Virtual Library GALILEO and is based at the University of Georgia.

Job and Career Accelerator helps you create professional and effective resumes and cover letters, master interviewing techniques, improve your work skills, and prepare for occupation-related exams. It will also help you explore occupations and find your occupation match and generate ideas about possible career paths to take.

celebrations. Visual displays, books and handouts were showcased for the months of May

through July.

Teacher Appreciation Week

Political and educational leaders first began discussions for a day to honor teachers in 1944. In

1953, Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded the 81st Congress to proclaim National Teachers’

Day. Congress declared March 7, 1980, as National Teacher Day. The National Education Associa-

tion continued to observe Teacher Day on the first Tuesday in March until 1985, when the Nation-

al PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week as the first full week of May. The NEA Representa-

tive Assembly then voted to make the Tuesday of that week National Teacher Day. National

Teacher Day is an unofficial national holiday.

Black Music Month

Black Music Month began in 1979 when Kenny Gamble, Ed Wright, and Dyana Williams devel-oped the idea to set aside a month dedicated to celebrating the impact of black music. Created by music business insiders, the group successfully lobbied President Jimmy Carter to host a recep-tion on June 7th, 1979 to formally recognize the cultural and financial contributions of black mu-sic. Since 1979, Black Music Month has grown from a small commemoration to national propor-tions with events held annually across the country. In 2000, US-Representative Chaka Fattah sponsored House Resolution 509, which formally recognized the importance of Black music on culture and the economy during President Bill Clinton’s administration. In 2009, President Barack Obama further defined June as African American Music Appreciation Month declaring the start of summer as a celebration for all the black “musicians, composers, singers, and songwriters [who] have made enormous contributions to our culture.” National Rose Month National Rose Month was celebrated in June. This Holiday is set aside for people to appreciate

the beautiful rose, learn about its many species and what all the rose has to offer. Its beauty,

scent, taste is just to name a few of what makes it so popular. A rose is a flowering shrub of the

genus Rosa. There are more than a hundred species of wild roses, all from the northern hemi-

sphere and mostly from temperate regions. The species form a group of generally prickly shrubs

or climbers, and sometimes trailing plants, reaching 2–5 meters tall, occasionally reaching as high

as 20 meters by climbing over other plants.

National Culinary Arts Month July is National Culinary Arts Month, this month-long celebration promotes awareness of profes-sional cooks and chefs and their contributions to culinary arts.
