Having said this, dismantling our current OLLI systems and transitioning to a new system will impact office resources and require patience on the part of the membership. (Have you ever experienced a house renovation or remodeling? It can be frustrating and disorienting but the results are usually worth it!) I will continue to keep you posted on our “remodeling job” as developments unfold.

Thank You, Donors On behalf of the Fund Development Team and OLLI at Granite State College, we thank the 431 members who have donated to OLLI during this fiscal year either on their registration form, member application form, in response to the November or April appeal or in lieu of a refund when dropping a class. Many of you have donated more than once! Your donations totaling $18,068 to date, will:

keep the cost of membership and class fees at the same level in fiscal year 2017, making it affordable and accessible to a greater number of older adults,

support volunteers,

maintain the current level of staffing (the equivalent of three) to support operations, volunteers and a growing membership, and

build reserves to ensure OLLI’s future

OLLI at Granite State College deeply appreciates your support in the spirit of Bernard Osher who has invested a significant sum to encourage older adults in New Hampshire to stay active and healthy by participating in lifelong learning and community engagement!

The OLLI Volunteer Network – Dedicated to Supporting the Membership In our OLLI organization June will be devoted to thanking 400+ men and women who volunteer for OLLI in one or more capacities. Some are leaders, others presenters; some select and schedule the array of classes found in the catalog, others provide crucial assistance in the classroom. The list of volunteer functions is long and varied and OLLI volunteers approach it with high performance standards, and 100% commitment to the members.

While the four learning sites will be honoring volunteers that work in their specific regions during the month of June, the OLLI Office would like to thank the volunteers that work at the state level to support all of our 1,100+ members.

Thank you, Office volunteers: These individuals assist members who phone or walk into the OLLI Office in Concord. Tasks may include helping “balance the books,” performing data entry, sorting and filling materials, preparing mailings and photocopies of (cont.)

OLLI Fiscal Year Ends on June 30 Did you know that OLLI operates on the same budget cycle as the state of New Hampshire (July 1, - June 30)? Did you know that the OLLI budget is “bundled” with the Granite State College (GSC) budget that is “bundled” with the University System of NH (USNH) budget? Is this already more than you wish you knew?!

Although OLLI has its own unique budget, it is scrutinized, finalized and approved with guidance from GSC Financial Operations through a series of steps that begins as early as November and ends with approval at the State House in June. Why the State House? The University System of NH receives some support from the state of NH and OLLI happens to be hosted by Granite State College, a state system school.

This is not to say that OLLI shares revenue and expenses with other parts of GSC or USNH, it just means we are not a separate nonprofit organization. In this respect OLLI is very fortunate because our overhead/administrative costs are minimal compared to many nonprofit organizations. We receive extensive in-kind support from Granite State College.

One of the in-kind services from which we benefit is support from the GSC office of Financial Operations. OLLI member accounts are protected by high confidentiality and credit card security, standards and professional account managers. Account lines and codes are aligned with those of the college and the University System of NH to ensure that revenue and expense tracking is reliable and accurate.

Your OLLI Steering Committee volunteers receive updated, monthly financial reports. Financial reports will be distributed to members in the OLLI Annual Report in September. In the meantime, be assured that the fiscal year 2016 OLLI budget continues to trend in a positive and healthy direction!

New Registration/ Members Management System You may remember reading in the April edition of OLLI Outlook that a team of GSC staff and OLLI volunteers is assessing software options to upgrade our capacity to manage growth and better serve members.

Recently the team narrowed the selection of vendor proposals to two. Both of the systems in contention are currently used by OLLIs in other states. Both would significantly streamline the online course registration process by instantly accepting registrations. Both systems would alert members immediately if a class had reached capacity and was full. Both systems would require that members submit their address, email, phone etc. initially and never again (referred to as setting up a profile or account). These features are among the many advantages of a new system.

Thank you, OLLI Outlook Newsletter Volunteers The Outlook editor compiles the newsletter each and every month. There are very few OLLIs in the country that have a monthly newsletter. With the help of a volunteer who collects items for the calendar, the editor writes and accepts articles written by many different volunteers, photos and calendar items, inserts graphics and trivia, and produces the OLLI Outlook. This publication is the best way to stay current on all things OLLI at GSC!

This year’s OLLI Outlook contributors included: Jacki Fogarty (editor), Norma Steiner and numerous members from every site whose articles contain bylines acknowledging their authorship. Many members have submitted photographs as well; frequent photographers include Richard Frye, Reta MacGregor, Janice Baker, Dottie Nelson, Jacki Fogarty and Sandy O’Neill.

OLLI office staff members wish to thank all of the volunteers who have contributed to this enormously successful year. You may not realize that you are part of Mr. Osher’s vision that OLLI members be offered an array of volunteer opportunities through which to offer their talents and regain or maintain a sense of purposefulness that they may otherwise be missing in retirement. Beyond that, your work benefits a much larger community of older adults in ways we cannot possibly know.

With sincere appreciation, Jane, Laurie, George and Tessa

OLLI Classes Combine Learning and Exploration in the Conway Area Submitted by Ted Slater, Class of 2008

Submitted by Patti Rau, Class of 2010

Reserve September 22 on your calendar and plan to attend OLLI’s Second Annual Meeting at Purity Spring Resort in East Madison NH. A sumptuous brunch will begin at 10:30 AM, followed by a short business meeting and a speaker.

Conway OLLI folks are busy getting things ready and hope that many of their southern OLLI friends will come up and enjoy the beauty of Mount Washington Valley in the fall. Following the meeting, guests can hike on gentle trails or use the kayaks and canoes at the Resort. And only six miles away is the picturesque and unique town of North Conway. Special attractions include The Conway Scenic Railroad, The Mount Washington Observatory and, of course, fabulous outlet shopping. For the golf enthusiasts, there are several courses in the area.

Hopefully, many who come to the meeting will want to spend a night or two in the area. Purity Spring is offering a discounted rate of $99 per night with includes lodging for 2 and a full country breakfast. This rate is valid for Wednesday and/or Thursday night.

An official Annual Meeting invitation will be sent by email to all OLLI members in July.

“My Quilting Journey” Submitted by John Russell, Class of 2014

Gladi Porsche graciously invited a small group of OLLI

members into her home in Lee to discuss her quilting journey.

She talked about how she came to quilting, how she designs and

plans quilts (all her quilts are her own designs), how she selects

fabric and where she finds her inspiration. She took us on a tour

of the house discussing many of her quilts and letting us look at

them in detail. She even showed how her dining room is

designed around this quilt which is displayed on the wall.

The second quilt is the first she created using an applique

technique. She calls it “Imperfect Beauty” because it is beautiful

in spite of some imperfections.

Gladi, who is a physician, formerly the Medical Director of the

UNH Health Services, has won awards for several of her quilts.

One quilt will be on display at this year’s American Quilting

Society show. She will have an exhibit at the New England

Quilt Museum in Lowell, MA in early January 2018. In addition

to the quilts shown here, you can see more of her work at her

website, www.gladiquilts.net.

Happily, Gladi is planning on making another presentation next

spring.

On May 20 about a dozen OLLI members attended a two-part class about the Abenakis, a Native American tribe with strong ties to the Conway area.

The afternoon session was held at the covered bridge spanning the Swift River (pictured at left). The class was presented by Bob Cottrell, Curator of the Conway Library Henney History Room and Curator of the Conway Historical Society.

Fascinated class members listening to Carl Lindblade

On May 17 on a beautiful day approximately 35 members gathered at the Omni Mount Washington Hotel admiring the great view of the still-snow-capped Mount Washington.

Their real purpose was to attend Carl Lindblade's presentation on the 1944 International Monetary Fund Conference held at the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods. We learned that the 44 attending nations sought to build a framework for economic cooperation to avoid a repetition of events that contributed to the Great Depression of the 1930's. .

Carl is an affiliate professor at UNH and has been presenting OLLI programs for the past ten years.

The morning class was held at the Salyards Center for the Arts, a museum containing artifacts and paintings highlighting the heritage of the White Mountain region. The presentation also included a history of the local covered bridges.

Tiptoeing Through the Tulips Submitted by Peg Fargo, Class of 2005

Forty Four OLLI members left early Sunday morning, May 15, for a

three day trip to Ottawa for the International Tulip Festival. Our

trip leader, Kelly Cooke, has taken three trips with OLLI and always

gets high praise for her precise planning and yet her flexibility

making the trip seem effortless. Once again, comments from trip

participants list the friendliness of the other OLLI members and the

competence of Kelly as the top of their satisfaction list.

Visits to the Royal Mounted Police Stables, Rideau Hall, the Museum

of History, the Art Gallery and Notre Dame kept everyone on the go.

Eleanor S. (who loves history) enjoyed Rideau Hall and learning about

the Canadian government and the ceremonial ties to Great Britain.

The grounds of Rideau Hall are covered in trees, planted by people

from all around the world. Marcia G. remembers the trees planted by

JFK and Jackie and Boris Yeltsin. The magnificent tulips were in full

bloom and evident all throughout the city. A step-on guide gave a

tour of the city and he added a depth of information with a humorous

touch which made the tour memorable, according to Martha C.

Good food, a good hotel, time to explore on their own were all listed

as favorable parts of the trip by Sharon K, Dan and Dianne C. Anne

W. has taken several tours with OLLI and finds them all well-

organized. She is always impressed that everyone is so cooperative

and on time.

Marcia G. says she will always remember the beauty of the tulips and

she also enjoyed having a “Beaver Tail” – sort of like our fried dough

only thinner and in the shape of a beaver’s tail. It’s warm, sprinkled

with brown sugar and cinnamon. From all the comments, it sounds like

this OLLI trip made some long-lasting memories for the participants.

Manchester OLLI celebrated Cinco de Mayo at its latest Mug ‘n Muffin on Cuatro de Mayo. Colorful paper flowers for the ladies’ hair and paper sombreros for the men were offered to each. An atmosphere of celebration from the colors of the tables with their centerpiece paper flowers, and maracas to the Mexican refreshments flooded the room. A few OLLI members wore a costume and many others wore bright colors to celebrate the theme of the morning.

Marigen Delgadillo, co-owner of the Mexican restaurant, Consuelo’s Taqueria, arranged for Victor Delgadillo, his wife, Tania, and Carla and Carlos, who spoke to the group about Cinco de Mayo and Mexican history accompanied by videos. They brought along some beautiful sombreros, and gave interesting details about them.

After the presentations a modified version of the cascarones ritual which signifies happiness and good luck was done with only one egg filled with confetti for each table for practical reasons. The six members at the table put one hand in the center of the table and the egg was cracked over all of the hands spreading the confetti over their hands. Tradition would have had each person have a cascarone cracked over his/her head!

The morning closed after a contest in which participants answered Spanish and English questions. Diann Steinberg was the lucky recipient of a Consuelo’s Taqueria gift certificate made possible by an anonymous donor. Everyone left with a recipe Marigen Delgadillo provided for Empanadas (dessert turnovers).

Consider What You Can Do Submitted by Sandy O’Neill, Class of 2013

The long-term sustainability of OLLI at GSC calls for contributions from members who see that benefits from their involvement far exceed course and membership fees. Consider what OLLI means to you. How does it impact your life? And then consider what can you do for OLLI?

Financial contributions and volunteer contributions to OLLI keep our organization running smoothly. The survey that was filled out by members in the early spring shows a high satisfaction rate with our OLLI program. Each one of us has something valuable to contribute to keeping this organization meaningful.

Member Survey – Spring 2016 Submitted by Jacki Fogarty, Class of 2012

We asked questions; you gave answers!

First of all, 401 of you took the time to respond, THANK YOU! With 39% of the membership weighing in we have information which is, in “survey world lingo” highly credible. That means your answers accurately represent the opinions and characteristics of the entire membership.

Over the next several months we’ll be telling you about survey results and the actions that will come out of what we learned. Here are a few quick looks:

On The Road With OLLI The work of the Statewide Travel Committee

Submitted by Peg Fargo, Class of 2005

Since 2011 the volunteer Travel Committee, one of the commit-tees reporting to the Steering Committee, has been planning and implementing trips for OLLI members. Taking its cue from member suggestions, this committee has carefully researched all of the trip destinations, often taking a day to explore the venue prior to the trip.

For day trips, the committee chooses the location and does all the planning necessary for a successful trip: promotion, scheduling, reservations, meal planning, bus arrangements and then leading the trip.

The committee started with day trips and then, in 2014, started working with Kelly Cooke of Terrapin Tours to offer extended multi-day trips. This venture has been very successful and our members seem to enjoy having the choice of day trips or extended trips during the Fall and the Spring.

Members of the committee who can pack their suitcase in a minute are: Dottie Nelson, Marcia Gray, Martha Clapp, Joyce Prowse, Elizabeth Flumignan, Norma Steiner and Peg Fargo, Chair. Laurie Galletta serves as staff liaison.

Day trips have included the JFK Library, Shaker Village at Sabbathday Lake in Maine, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Ogunquit Playhouse, Isabella Gardner Museum, A Day in Salem, MA, A Day in Portland, Maine, the Boston Symphony Rehearsal, and Lowell Mills.

Extended trips have included Martha’s Vineyard, New York City, the Hudson River Valley and the International Tulip Festival in Ottawa, Canada. Each of our trips has an educational component with museums topping the favorite spot for OLLI members.

In June OLLI will spend a day at the JFK Library and the new Edward Kennedy Library and in the fall a trip to the Mystic, Connecticut area is planned along with a day trip to the Winnipesaukee Playhouse.

On a scale of 0 to 10 with 10 being outstanding:

Your satisfaction with OLLI is 8.7

Your satisfaction with OLLI classes is 8.6

Your satisfaction with OLLI social activities is 6.42

Your satisfaction with OLLI service opportunities

(e.g., volunteering) is 6.7

The most important thing you consider when you think about taking a class is (no

surprise) the topic. The second most important thing is where the class is held

(i.e., which site).

We asked you “what is the best thing OLLI

brings to your life’ and “what is the second best thing.”

We’ll tell you a lot more about your responses to these questions, but a high-

level summary tells us the best thing is learning and intellectual stimulation.

Second best is people.

More to follow in future issues of Outlook. And, while you are waiting for that information, various volunteer committees are reviewing the details of the survey responses and planning for improving the member experience for all OLLI members.
