SUMMER SCHOOL 2019 IS COMING!
We can’t wait to meet you and work together on the refurbishment of the house with sustainable techniques for social impact! Meanwhile, we are sharing with you more information and details on the program of those three intense and great weeks!
Of course, you can still always contact us personally if you have any further questions.
We are looking forward to starting the edition, working hard to get everything prepared, and finally meeting you in person.
All the best from Porto,
Your Critical Concrete Team
Hello,
4 5
So far we have been working with the social workers of a municipality to find a house and a family requiring our intervention to improve their life conditions. For this fourth edition, the program slightly changed. This year, we are very happy to work hand in hand with the organisation managing the social housing estate in the city of Matosinhos to refurbish one of their own houses. The house is an approx. 1930 empty house that will be refurbished and transformed into a social house ready to host a new family. Address: RUA MAR NOVO, 34, MATOSINHOS Let’s meet there the first day 05/08 at 9.00 for a site visit and learning more about i!

2. PROGRAMMEIn details
The refurbishment is organised in different working groups on two specific sites during the three weeks long process. Weekly team meeting will give you the opportunity to talk about the ongoing work and to organise rotation in the working groups in a way to fulfill expectations, curiosity and a wider range of knowledge and skills.
Located in our house, Rua Direita da Francos 1024 (That we have already kindly presented in the previous booklet) the production center is the hub of the summer school. The participatory design days, the meetings, all the lectures (every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 17.00 to 19.00), the workshops, the bar camp and last but not the least, the final party after the certification ceremony will be held there.
After the first two days getting to know each other, defining the design and the strategy and the working groups, it will be time to start the demolition then the refurbishment on the site!
During the three weeks, both sides will be under the kind supervision of architects and builders. In the team this year: Samuel from Critical Concrete, Hugo from Colectivo Mel, Ana from Centro Da Terra & Gianluca from Ctrl+z
The programme may be subject to last minute changes or pop-up surprises. The course will be held in English.

2. MYCELIUM INSULATION
1. PAPERCRETE INSULATION
This year we have been discovering stone wall techniques during our workshop space refurbishment and experiencing further mycelium insulation. We are keen to share with you our knowledge and skills on those techniques next summer.
Last Summer School we made some bricks prototypes to grow mycelium with different substrate. This year, we will share our knowledge and we will explain how to make a mycelium and insulation panel prototype!
Last insulation prototype experiment made in our lab, we are going to present to you and make papercrete insulation; a mix between recycled cardboard and lime! This technique is likely going to be used for insulating the house this year.

MARCELA LOPEZ
Marcela is the founder of the platform Contested Urban Waterscapes, which explores water inequalities in urban contexts from an interdisciplinary perspective. She works at the nexus between urban political ecology and urban geography to examine how inequalities can be productively conceptualized and explained through contestations that emerge over the control and access to water in cities.
MIODRAG KUC
Miodrag is an interdisciplinary artist and urban theorist trained as architect / urban planner in various cultural settings. His work explores the role of ephemeral structures in uncertain urban conditions and spatial appropriations of marginal social groups. He is founder of the studio ParaArtFormations which moves at the intersection of urban studies, performative-planning, artistic interventions and micro politics.
ANJA PLANISCEK
Anja is a Slovenian Architect from Ljubljana. Her work is focused on the architecture of social engagement, housing politics, socialisation of architecture and Slovenian architecture in period of socialism. Currently working as associate professor at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Ljubljana. She is involved in many different projects from many different fields.
TUESDAY 13/08
THURSDAY 15/08
BAR CAMPA BAR CAMP will be organised during the second week on the wednesday evening. It will give you a time and a space to present your own work, project, experience,... It’s an opportunity to share with your peers whatever you feel like and however you feel like! Different activities can be organized: discuss about your ideas, share your projects, make a little workshop, … So think about it and offer whatever you are involved in and may catch the interest of others. This evening will be specially dedicated to you and made by you.
URBAN MAPPING WORKSHOP
During the Bar Camp evening, members from the local Bosh Alumni network will join us. Through the leadership of mentors who are part of it, an urban mapping workshop will be organized. An opportunity to develop and create a new perception on cities.
BERNARDO AMARAL
Parallel to his architecture practice (BAAU), Bernardo is questioning the production relationship between design and building process, as well as the role of the architectural practice in social contexts. In 2015 Bernardo enrolled in a PHD Architecture Program in the Coimbra University, and has been developing a research thesis about the relationships between the production and working methodologies of current architecture practices, that reclaim a social and political engagement.
