The end of the 2012-13 school really came on quickly. I’m not sure if it seemed that way because of the weather or merely that we finished the year with many exciting and productive activities in the middle school. First and foremost, I want to take a moment and extend a huge appreciation and thank you to the many parent and community volunteers who assisted in so many capacities during the school year. Whether it was reading with a student during the RtI period, chaperoning field trips, or helping out in various classrooms, we could not have accomplished many of our initiatives without your support.

Speaking of summer, please be sure to continue your support of reading at

home. Encourage the kids to set a reading goal for the summer and even make a trip to a book store. In addition, have them check out the many on-line math resources their teachers have shared with them during the school year. Simply spending an average of 20 minutes a day each on reading and math activities can make a huge difference in your child’s skills. I know it is difficult to schedule around family vacations, summer activities, etc. but with the access to technology students have today, they can find plenty of learning opportunities at their fingertips.

Finally, as I write my last middle school newsletter in Lodi, I wish everyone

a great summer and best of luck in the future. Lodi is a great school district and I feel very fortunate to have spent the past eight years here raising my family and supporting the staff and students of this community.

Summer Hours The middle school office will be

available 24 hours a day and will be

checked occasionally throughout the

summer. Regular hours will resume

August 20th.

Summer School Changes

Lots of exciting changes are taking place for summer school 2013. All classes this summer will be held at Lodi High School. This will allow us to take better advantage of the school district facilities and eliminate shuttle buses between schools.

Session 1: June 17 - June 28

No Classes July 1 - July 5

Session 2: July 8 - July 19

Session 3: July 22 - August 2

FFA State Finalist

Congratulations to Hailey Hellenbrand, grade 8, for being a State Finalist in the

FFA Jr. High Essay Contest! Hundreds of essays are submitted from FFA chapters around the state and Hailey has

been selected as the Section 6 winner and one of four finalists. She will go on stage at the State FFA Convention, June 11 at 8:00 p.m. to receive her award and for the announcement of the overall winner. Hailey wrote a 500 word essay based on the National FFA theme “Grow.”

Successful Food Pantry and Essentials Center Drive

Sixth grade teacher, Michelle Howe, organized a week long food pantry and essentials center drive. Students earned points during the week for bringing in specific items on certain days of the week. The highest number of items collected for the week were the students of Mrs. Dean’s homeroom. Thank you to all that donated items to this worthy cause.

8th Grade Choir

The eighth grade choir earned a first place rating at the Large Group Festival on April 25th.

Always Needed

The middle school has collection boxes for Campbell soup labels, Box Tops, Kwik Trip Milk Moola and old gym shoes. The collection boxes are located

The PTO Cookie Dough Sale and More Thank-you so much to all who sold cookie dough to raise

money for our schools! This was the best year ever in sales, with the final tally of the proceeds over $7,700 for our schools. The award winning sellers for the middle school included Nolan Breunig, Jacob Johnson, Hanna Lehrke, Austin Meinholz, Jacob Trotter, Colin West and Hannah Wilkes.

The PTO would like to give a special note of appreciation to all of the monthly Market Day supporters. These regular profits enable the PTO to give back to all four of our schools in many ways throughout the year. This last school year alone, the top 10 customers were able to contribute nearly $7,000 in sales. Total profit so far this year is nearly $12,400! The PTO could not function without your support, and we are truly grateful. And a special thank-you to Peter Tonn of Lickety Split who donated $100 for gift card awards for the top cookie dough sellers this spring.

GET INVOLVED in 2013-14 SCHOOL YEAR As we look to the fall, the PTO is still in need of volunteers to

continue our mission for the schools. We are seeking individuals who are interested in enhancing our children’s educational and overall experience in our schools. Please consider giving whatever time you can to learn about what is going on in our schools and how you can help.
