NEW COURSE BEING OFFERED!

Instructor:

James Coburn is the USU Observatory Manager and has been

teaching astronomy at USU since 2005. He got his first

experience in teaching astronomy while teaching the

astronomy merit badge at a scout camp. As an undergraduate

physics student at USU, he ran the old observatory, located

near the football stadium, for three years. He attended

graduate school at Oregon State University, where he earned a

masters degree in physics education. In 2000 he returned to

USU and took the job of Teaching Laboratory Supervisor and

Demonstration Specialist for the Department of Physics. A highlight of his career was to help design and

oversee the construction of the USU Observatory that was built in 2009. He led the USU Eclipse Team in 2017

for the total solar eclipse. The group traveled into the path of totality and did outreach and gathered

scientific data in Rigby, Idaho.

This course will allow you the chance to explore the planets of our Solar System, their moons, dwarf

planets, asteroid and comets. You will also learn about the formation of our Solar System and how it

compares to other star systems that have recently been discovered. After a discussion on stars and

their properties, you will learn about the components of galaxies and the fate of the universe. The

week will lead up to spending Friday evening in the USU Observatory to look through a variety of

different telescopes! Click HERE for more information on this course.
