A recent survey of pond-goers showed that many felt a bit gypped because the town’s pond season ends in mid-August as many lifeguards have to get back to college. Many said the Pomps Pond closing is too early in the summer.

“We did a survey and found out that some resi-dents think our season is too short,” said Recre-ation Coordinator Janice Coppolino.

But operating the pond without lifeguards is not an option. Rather, Pomps Pond is once again opening a bit earlier as a way to extend the 2016 summer beach sea-son in town.

In the past, Pomps Pond usually opened on the Sat-urday after schools closed. This year, Pomps Pond opens on Saturday, June 11 at noon while schools close on Wednesday, June 22. Pomps Pond closes on Sunday, Aug. 14. That’s a nine-week pond season for the summer of 2016.

“We opened a little earlier last year, too,” Coppolino said. “It worked out fine.”

The pond’s concession stand will also be opened on June 11 while beach activi-ties will start right after the pond’s opening, including the Stand Up Paddle Board Launch Night on Thursday, June 16, starting at 6 p.m.

For the first time, family movies will be shown at the pond this summer. Bring a chair or a blanket and snacks will be available to buy. On Friday, July 15, fam-ilies can watch “Zootopia” starting at dusk. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will be shown on Friday, Aug. 19 at dusk.

The movies are free and movie-goers do not need a pond sticker to enjoy the screenings, Coppolino said.

Other new events at the town pond this summer are:

Meditation Night: Medita-tion expert, Seth Monk of Andover, by the waterfront at Pomps Pond on Thursday, July 21 at 6 p.m., in a guided group sitting and walking meditation session. Bring a small blanket or cushion and wear comfortable cloth-ing. Rain date is Friday July 22.

Paint Night: Professional illustrator and portrait artist Nicole Laponius will guide a step-by-step land-scape portrait of Andover’s own Pomps Pond. No expe-rience necessary and all supplies included. This class is Wednesday, July 27 at 6 p.m. Rain date is Thursday, July 28.

It wouldn’t be summer in Andover without live music on six Wednesday summer nights in The Park as locals bring chairs or blankets with coolers stuffed with dinner and snacks.
