2017 AndrianoMüller-Thurgau(Alto Adige, Italy)Cantina Andriano wasfounded in 1893 andwas the first coopera-tive winery in AltoAdige. The vineyardsare clustered on thesloping hills leading down from MountGantkofel, and are full of dolomite rockand calcareous stones that have erodeddown from the peak. Across the board,Andriano’s wines have a strong mineralityto them – even the reds. I enjoy all of An-driano’s wines, but the Müller-Thurgauhas a special hold on me. Luzon Rosado (Jumilla, Spain)I know full well that customers have a lot of rosé bot-tlings from which to choose. We offer dozens here,and I truly love nearly every single one of them forone reason or another. This particular rosé is specialfor many reasons. First, it was one of the top threerosés we tried, from anywhere on the planet, duringthe course of our staff tastings of rosés this spring.Second, we are told that Surdyk’s is the only retailerin the U.S. to get any. Luzon has undergone a gener-ational change at the top of their winemaking team,and the new guy is really driving great quality right now, but this is theirfirst rosé vintage, and they didn’t make enough to go around. We were inthe right place at the right time, and all of us benefit. All the wines fromLuzon are on promotion during the sum-mer sale, and they are all special, but thisone stands out. (112977)

TRADITIONAL SANGRIA1 each: apple, orange, and lemon, sliced2 oz simple syrup½ cup Spanish Brandy 1 bottle of Luzon MonastrellPlace fruit and simple syrup into a large pitcher and muddle until combined. Add Brandy and Wine, stirringto combine. Chill for 1 hour before serving over ice.

SPARKLING CITRUS SANGRIA2 oz. Vodka2 oz. simple syrup1 bottle Portell Brut Cava1 can San Pellegrino LimonataIn a large pitcher, combine vodka, Cointreau, simple syrup, andsliced fruit. Stir well. Place in the fridge to chill for minimum 1 hour.When ready to serve, add the sparkling wine, San Pellegrino, andfrozen grapes. Pour into fluted glasses.

The commitment level of wineries and grape growers in both time and money to earn thatcertification is truly impressive, and most people assume those wines must be expensive. Fortunately, we carry Bonterra Vineyardswines from Mendocino, where they have made wine with certified organically grown grapes since 1987. Their 2016 Cabernet in-cludes grapes from three of their estate vineyards that have earned the coveted Demeter Biodynamic Certification. The wineshows aromas of blueberry, cherry, currant, and spices from toasted oak barrels. On the palate is smooth round tannins, lush blueand black fruits with a core of acidity to help focus and provide structure, along with notes of cedar spice.
