Color Mixing Science Activity
SUMMER READING PROGRAM 2021 CRAFTS
Supplies This activity is available online only. Adult supervision suggested. 5 clear containers (jars or cups—glass is probably best) Water Food dye in primary colors: red, yellow, blue (washable watercolors) Paper towels Lids for containers optional
Preparation: Allow 24 hour period to pass to complete activity. Fill 5 containers with water. Place less water in two of the containers. Discuss beforehand what will happen with the colors mix. What colors will appear in the
non-colored jars? What would happen if other colors mix?
Step 1: Have the children drop in the food coloring in three of the containers: red, yellow and blue. Line up the containers, alternating the colored water with the clear water.
Day 1
Step 2: Fold four paper towels into long rectangles. Place one end of the paper towel into the red-colored water and the other end into the clear water. The paper towel ends should touch the bottoms of the containers.
Step 3: Add another paper towel end in the clear water and into the yellow-colored water. Repeat with the blue-colored water last.
Step 4: Watch as the colors transfer between containers and see a magic rainbow appear!
