Summer Reading Assignment 2018 AP English Literature & Composition Hello Ladies! Happy reading. I am excited to see you all in August and to get into some deep discussions about the literature you will have read over the Summer. I want to encourage you to read both texts TWICE; the first time simply for pleasure and the second time read to analyze; applying more scrutiny and annotating thoroughly. (There is an attached document that explains how to annotate well). The expectation is that you are an avid reader and can't get enough of books. If that is not the case, and for you reading is a chore, then you are probably in the wrong class. Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. Any two poems by one of the following authors: Percy Bysshe Shelley, William Wordsworth, William Blake, Lord Byron, Thomas Hardy, John Keats, Billy Collins. Seamus Heaney, Carol Ann Duffy, Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, Emily Dickinson, John Donne, Margaret Atwood, Wilfred Owen, Robert Herrick. There will be two separate tests on the texts the first week of school, so be ready. Taking notes on theme, motif, symbol, figurative language, etc. is also recommended. For the play, the test will be a quotation test. You will need to know who is speaking, to whom and the context of the quotation. So, read it aloud, get your friends and family to join in by reading parts so that the words stay with you. As Wuthering Heights is a strong example of Gothic Romanticism, you should also do some research on the period. What did the Romantics value? What was going on in the society of the day that influenced the writers of the time? How does understanding context improve your appreciation of the novel? For the poetry preparation, read two poems by your chosen author to analyze. Then prepare a PowerPoint or Prezi on your selected poems to share with the class. The presentation should include images showing your annotation of the stanzas in the poems, some background on the author, social context, and commentary on the literary devices used by the author. There is a handout on how to read a poem included in this packet to help you. In addition to the reading and assignments, you are to submit a draft of your college essay based on the Common Application prompts for 2018 - 2019 that are found in this link: https://www.commonapp.org/whats-appening/application-updates/common-applicationannounces- 2017-2018-essay-prompts I wish you a wonderful summer with time to rest, relax and read. Hello Ladies!

• Macbeth by William Shakespeare. • Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. • Any two poems by one of the following authors: Percy Bysshe Shelley, William Wordsworth, William

Blake, Lord Byron, Thomas Hardy, John Keats, Billy Collins.

AP Literature Summer Assignment ANNOTATING LITERATURE

What to Do: Read and annotate the books assigned for summer reading before school starts. This assignment will be

due the second day our English class meets.

"Just as rigor does not reside in the barbell but in the act of lifting it, rigor in reading is

not an attribute of a text but rather a reader's behavior-engaged, observant,

responsive, questioning, analytical. These close reading strategies are a means by which

you engage with text and they offer you a chance to hone your critical reading habits."

-Kylene Beers, Notice and Note

The Assignment: Annotating Your Books For your summer reading assignment, you will annotate your books as you read. Annotation

encourages close reading and keeps students engaged in a text by having them record their thoughts

during the reading process. To annotate a text, write meaningful questions, comments, and observations within the text of the book. These annotations will be submitted to your English teacher

for a grade.

If you are annotating a large passage, record the most important sentence or two from that passage. Be

sure to spread your annotations out evenly across the books.

Perhaps the simplest way to distribute your annotations is to divide the pages in your book by 50 (the

minimum expected number of annotations); the result is how many pages between annotations. (Example: 200 page book/SO annotations= one annotation every 4 pages) There are more sample

annotations on the following pages.

As you read your text, consider all of the ways that you can connect with what you are reading. Don't

overuse the same type of annotation. Instead, use a variety of approaches to record your reactions to

your book. Here are some suggestions that will help you with your annotations: • Offer an analysis or interpretation of what is happening in the text.• Point out and discuss literary techniques the author is using.• Explain the effects of syntax, tone, diction, point of view, figurative language and other

techniques on the text.• Ask specific questions about what you don't understand.• Make connections to other parts of the book.• Make connections to other texts you have read or to things you have seen, including movies,

comic books/graphic novels, news events, other books, stories, plays, songs, or poems• Paraphrase or summarize a particularly difficult or meaningful passage or moment from the

text.• Make connections to your own life experiences.• Describe a new perspective you may have now.• Explain the historical context or traditions/social customs that are used in the passage.
