Star Guitar

The main thing I was looking at in this project was the way in which the director monopolised the field of view as the train travelled. In the chronogram I tried to show how there was an element of repetition and overlap.

I was also interested in the seated position of the viewer in relation to what could be seen by the viewer.

The director used a graph and arbitatry objects such as oranges, forks and wooden spoons to map out the video before it was designed.

“Star Guitar” is the second single from The Chemical Brothers 2002 album Come with Us. The song reached number eight in the UK Singles Chart, number two on the American dance chart and number one in the UK Dance Chart. Wikipedia

It’s Gondry & co figuring out how ‘Star Guitar’ should actually work. It starts with sketches - which are themselves mesmerizing - but ends with a ridiculous mock-up of the film laid out in a school playground using sneakers, oranges, video cassettes and broomsticks. Brilliant to watch. BEN MALBON

Chemical Brothers Star Guitar Music Video Chronogram shows the relation of space and time

Star Guitar Michel Gondry

This music video uses repetition as a device. The scenes seem to move in a loop and follow the pattern and beat of the music. I have tried to show this in the diagram by adding a graph which Gondry used to plan his work. He used oranges, forks and wooden spoons to model the movement of the train before creating the final finished work. This diagram should be read downwards. It has the graph layout which then corresponds with the placement of screenshots from the film on a time line. The other aspect is the way in which this relates to the sound waves at the bottom of the page.

Abstraction of Sight: The Eye: Instrument of Intrusion

The mapping of time and space is key to this project. During a journey on the DLR, it was noted that the movement of the trains caused a transition for the passenger. It was a smooth transition one that moves from one station to another with acute accuracy and according to the tube map available at the stations. I wanted to take this map and cut it up and stitch the pathway of the DLR and the stations in a random order and then see how this affects the passenger. Does the transition actually make a difference?

Focus on forms in the distance is another key aspect, one is not limited by their field of vision as they would be in transit on foot. You are free to experience the sensory data without restrictions. This allows a merging of the public and private spaces. Not only can you experience the visual you can also engage in sound information without the barriers of geological or social protocols.

When we jump from one “visual setting” to another does this register a significant event in the mind? There is the idea that these spaces “disappear” or are lost in time and space. Is there is disjoint in the eye, memory and sensory information? The mind sees no division between public and private, these notions are dislocated in the movement of the DLR train carriage on the railway line. An image is then formed through the displacement and fragmentation of the spaces. This leaves the question of what the spaces between the fragmented spaces actually are and do? This leads to the film, which gives a sense of the mind space in between the movement, thus

putting time at the forefront as it remains the constant. How would the brain react to this? “It is (almost) as if two different spaces, one sealed, the other permeable – compete to occupy the same moment in time.” The author seems to indicate a complete merger of the inside and outside space, which in relation to the DLR is divided by the thin, transparent layer of glass that separates the passenger from fully engaging with the physical environment in a tactile way. This is not only practical but also necessary for the way in which people engage in the activity of travelling on the DLR. It is almost as if “a certain space was shattered and it did not disappear” the speed

of the DLR could be said to shatter through the different time spaces causing a psychological reaction.

Crossing the barrier from the public to the private is done by movement (the movement of the feet or other transportation mechanism), eyesight (when spaces are not screened off ) or by sound (this could indicate private conversations on the trains or train operative jargon that should be private but due to the confinement of the space it is actually public). The daydream can be a significant private space, which is then interrupted by other sounds that cross this barrier and therefore become public. This daydream could then be broken up by something quite dramatic, it can cause the mind to “snap out of it” and then forced to interact in the public realm. There is never a

real moment of calm or silence due to these constraints.

“Architecture is appreciated in a state of distraction” again links to the idea of sensory information and sensory receptors in the brain cause the experience of a journey on the DLR to be understood in Architectural space. In this project the visual receptors and senses are most significant. The eye (mind) then becomes the instrument of intrusion, more than just a camera but also a gateway to representation.

The LDDC

What was the LDDC?The Corporation was an urban development corporation, the second to be established by the then Secretary of State for the Environment, Michael Heseltine, under s.136 of the Local Government, Planning and Land Act 1980. Its object was to secure the regeneration of the London Docklands Urban Development Area (UDA) comprising 8½ square miles of East London in the Boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Newham and Southwark. This was a response to a huge decline in the economy of the area brought about by the progressive closure of the docks (and dock related activity) from the 1960s onwards. Years later, in his book Life in the Jungle*, Michael

Heseltine wrote: “I had found myself in in small plane, heading in that direction by way of the London’s East End. My indignation at what was happening on the South Bank was as nothing compared to my reaction to the immense tracts of dereliction I now observed. The rotting docks - long since abandoned for deep-water harbours able to take

modern container ships downstream - the crumbling infrastructure that had once supported their thriving industry and vast expanses of polluted land left behind by modern technology and enhanced environmentalism. The place was a tip: 6,000 acres of forgotten wasteland” There had been attempts by the local authorities to deal with this. These are described in an LDDC monograph “Initiating Urban Change” published in 1997 - see below. These efforts were perceived by the Government to be much too slow and there was a need for resources on a scale which it would only make available through a

focussed agency of its own. LDDC was wholly financed by grant from the Government and the income generated by the disposal of land for housing, industrial and commercial development.(* Hodder and Stoughton, 2000, ISBN 0 340 73915 0 - see pages 130,153, 200, 211-214, 380, 397-398 and 515. Among LDDC veterans Michael Heseltine is regarded as the father of the Corporation)

Powers

Although its influence in the area was undoubtedly very strong, LDDC’s powers were limited:It had powers to acquire land by agreement or compulsory purchase and, in the case of the large amount of land in the public sector, there were powers for it to be vested in the Corporation by the Secretary of State. This ensured a supply of land for development.

It took over from the London Boroughs their planning (but not their plan making) powers. This was response to the Government’s perception that the Boroughs had been too restrictive in exercising their development control and other powers because their plans for the area were outmoded and inappropriate. It had powers, and the resources, to provide new (or refurbish the existing) infrastructure.

Apart from planning all other public services (housing, education, health etc) remained firmly in the hands of the Boroughs and other public agencies although the Corporation could and did provide funds for their development and improvement. The Corporation’s lack of remit in this respect was often misunderstood by those who felt the LDDC should do more to revitalise these services for the benefit of local people.

Royal Albert Docks Site AnalysisBoris Johnson (Mayor of London) and Sir Robin Wales (Mayor of Newham) have outlined the Royal Albert Docks as a development site in which they want to develop a new employment hub and a world class business destination. They have also added that they would like the site to be developed as a “Knowledge Nexus” that

specialises in research and developments, thus bridging the gap between the proposed business development and the University of East London. They have specially mentioned that they want to work with ‘occupiers, investors and real estate developers’. I think this could be an interesting approach to the site.

“Royal Albert will be the focus for the expansion of the education, research, business and civic offer in the Royal Docks. Integration between the University of East London and business occupiers will help establish a ‘knowledge nexus’ with skills, knowledge transfer and research and development benefits for Royal Albert occupiers. This will be further enhanced by the proposed Academy, to be established at Royal Albert.

Royal Albert provides flexible development sites capable of accommodating a range of building sizes attractive to a variety of tenants from larger corporate headquarters to smaller incubator and start up occupiers.

The area has excellent strategic accessibility, with existing connections to the strategic road network and three DLR stations providing public transport access. New development in the area will incorporate a variety of uses including retail and leisure uses, which will provide convenient local amenities for residents and employees.

Newham Dockside, occupied by the London Borough of Newham, and the University of East London have established a benchmark for high quality development at Royal Albert. Future development will reinforce the strong sense of place, establishing a continuous dock-edge promenade incorporating a variety of spaces, together with a central public realm ‘spine’ to provide strong integration between the individual development schemes.

New development along Royal Albert Way will create additional activity in the area and will promote connections and movement between Royal Albert, the wider docks and the communities of Beckton to the north. Beckton District Park will be linked to the Royal Albert dockside, providing a valuable public amenity and a direct physical connection between the surrounding community and the main employment district within the Royal Docks.”

The FutureIN most of the LDDC’s area the Corporation’ work was sufficiently complete, and the momentum of regeneration such, that there was no need for a specialised agency to take over its role. The Boroughs and other local agencies were left to carry on the work. In the Royal Docks, however, the Corporation’s there was a good deal of

outstanding work. This was taken over by another agency of the central government, English Partnerships, working in collaboration with the London Borough of Newham to whom the LDDC’s planning powers were restored. The joint team established for this purpose operated from offices on the north side of the Royal Albert Dock just opposite the Airport.

In July 2000, the interests, assets and liabilities of English Partnerships in the London region transferred to the new London Development Agency (LDA). The LDA joined the nine other Regional Development Agencies which were set up in 1999 but unlike the others, the LDA is answerable to the Mayor of London, and is one of four bodies for which the Mayor is responsible (the others being the Metropolitan Police, Fire Authority and Transport for London). Recent and new developments in the Royal Docks are the subject of another article on this site

Dear Mrs Phillips,

In clarifying the location of the Royal Albert Piazza, it was identified it was contained within the planning application for the redevelop-ment of the Royal Albert Dock Northside in 1994 under Planning Application 94/0721. At that time the London Docklands Development Corporation, where responsible for the development of the Royal Al-bert area and as you have identified commissioned the landscaping of the north side of the dock, including the Royal Albert piazza. In 1997 further development of the area was approved as part of the Royals Business Park development by the LDDC.

From the plans and the associated report and following planning approval, it is evident that the construction of the office build-ing took place on the site of the Albert Square/Piazza. Today this office building is known as Newham Dockside.

6 January 2012Good Afternoon

Thank you for your further email.Having consulted colleagues in the Royal Docks regeneration team, we have still been unable to locate officer knowledge of this piazza site in the Royal Albert dock area. We have noted that the design plans are from 1997 and these were originally commissioned by the LDDC (whom as you will be aware are no longer in existence.)

IPAC / Sander Architects

Sander Architects was awarded first place with their design for the IPAC, a new performing arts center for Idyllwild Arts Academy, one of the country’s top three feeder high schools for the arts. Situated in the mountains outside Los Angeles, the IPAC rests on one side of the site, with the empty space forming a “new green quad at the heart of campus”.

The walkable roof will be landscaped with drought-tolerant greenery and provide additional seating for concerts. When movies are projected onto the Theater Fly Tower, the roof will provide an outdoor movie theater viewing area. The panel designs are inspired by the foliage in the area.

The building demonstrates Sander Architects’ “hybrid-construction concept”, which uses recycled light-gauge metal building components that will be manufactured off-site using computer-controlled processes. By using this construction method, Sander Architects has greatly reduced the cost of previous projects, and estimates that this proposal will be 30% below the budget.

Schematic design is schedule to be completed in October, and construction should start in mid-2010.

VERTICAL CIRCULATIONThe lift takes users up to the upper floor level which is also the green roof finished floor level, this allows for an alternative entrance to the council offices.

STEPS LEADING TO THE EXISTING COUNCIL OFFICESThese steps offer a route to the existing council offices. It also allows users to see the clear connection between the landscape and the council offices. It allows users to understand the architecture more clearly, the ground floor plans are just a preamble to the museum in the existing council offices.

CHANGES IN LEVELThe changes in level also encourage users to circulate around the building. The movement also causes them to be aware of the current typography and how it has been modified to draw attention to the historical context of the site.

The grid structure used to set the dimensions of the proposal have been set to mimic the dimensions and geometry of the current Council Offices. This also serves as a direct construction link and ensures that the synthesis of the council offices and the landscape is a smooth one. The number of columns also fluctuates with the functions of each of the areas on site. This allows for the smooth landscape to be dramatic. The grid structure also enhances the idea of zoning and creates a basis for the accommodation on the site including specifics such as roof lights and areas of ventilation.

THE SuDS strategy on site enables rainwater and grey water to be harvested and recycled as it is used in the heating and cooling system of the building. The fact that the roof is sloped allows for a constant flow of rain water on the surface, the vegetation and substrate also act as an absorbent sponge that allows the water to be used on site for a flourishing garden. The caps on the edge of the landscape also double up as a drainage system that allows the water to be contained and recycled.

CONCRETE WALLS PROVIDES THERMAL MASS

EXPOSED CONCRETE CEILINGS AND MASONRY WALLS HELP TO STABILISE INTERNAL TEMPERATURES AND PROVIDES A WAY OF HEATING AND COOLING MAINTENANCE

GREEN ROOF LANDSCAPE PROMOTES BIODIVERSITY

PHOTOVOLTAIC PANELS ON THE ROOF CREATES AN ENERGY SOURCE THUS REDUCING USE OF SPARSE ENERGY RESOURCES

HEAVY CONSTRUCTION THIS INCLUDES THE MECHANICAL VENTILATION SYSTEM THAT ALLOWS THE TEMPERATURE IN THE EXHIBITION CENTRE TO REMAIN CONSTANT

RAINWATER IS HARVESTED AND THE GREY WATER IS USED TO FLUSH THE TOILETS AND RUN THE HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEM

VENTILATION THROUGH ROOF. THE LOWER VENTILATION PANELS ARE USED TO ALLOW NATURAL CROSS VENTILATION IN THE EXHIBITION SPACES

ROOF LIGHTS ALLOWS FOR DAYLIGHT TO FILTER THROUGHOUT THE DAY

SERVICES ARE HIDDEN BEHIND THE OFFICES, THE SOLID CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION ALLOWS FOR A WELL INSULATED BUILDING THUS REQUIRING LESS HEATING/ ENERGY. IT IMPROVES THE THERMAL QUALITIES.

THE SLOPE OF THE ROOF ACTS AS A WIND BREAKER TO THE PREVAILING WIND

NORTH FACING OFFICES ALLOWS FOR LESS ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING SOLUTIONS AS NATURAL DAYLIGHT CAN BE USED.

SUDS STRATEGYWATER RECYCLING SYSTEM THAT USES WATER FROM THE DOCK AND GREY WATER FROM RAINFALL TO FLUSH TOILETS AND RUNS THE HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEM IN THE BUILDING

ROOF ALSO ALLOWS FOR SOLAR SHADING IN THE SOUTH, MINIMISING THE NEED FOR MECHANICAL COOLING/SHADING SYSTEMS

The revised landscape strategy allows for a smoother roof geometry and can be built using standard systems, therefore saving on costs. The landscape is also more likely to flourish with vegetation due to this change in geometry.

This change also allows for the landscape to be read more clearly, whether from a view on the DLR or when walking along the docks. This change in design has also allowed for an ease in construction and requires less specific engineering works.

This internal image of the exhibition space shows the way in which the winter garden and shop/exhibition space is used. In the hypothetical situation above the council offices are used as an annual award ceremony.

The seats are empty and the award winner is actually a cardboard cut out. The whole image speaks of a certain corrupt manner that seems to be oblivious to the viewer.
