The Summer Student Program

The Summer Student Program is back again this

summer! The program is designed to give the

opportunity to all members to visit with students

for companionship or any organization needed

around the house. Some examples of activities that

may be completed with a summer student include

computer lessons, board games, video games, or a

stroll around the neighborhood.

Eric Jeong is a recent graduate of the Kinesiology

program at McMaster University and will be

returning to school in September at the University

of Guelph for his Master’s of Public Health. Outside

of school, Eric enjoys playing soccer and tennis,

and likes to spend time camping outdoors with

family and friends on the weekends.

Sabah Balousha just finished her 3rd year at

McMaster University where she is studying

Sociology and Business. She is extremely

passionate about helping others and loves

interacting with people. Sabah hopes to be able to

apply her academic and extracurricular experiences

when organizing events for the MS Society of

Canada.

MS Research Update

June-August 2014

Phase II Clinical Trial for Progressive MS Treatment

A research team from the UK published a phase II clinical trial exploring the safety and efficacy of

a cholesterol-lowering drug called simvastatin in people with secondary progressive MS. Overall,

the results suggest that simvastatin is safe and has a beneficial effect on brain atrophy and

disability. The results are encouraging and warrant phase III trials to determine the effect of

simvastatin on a larger group of people with MS as well as when taken over the long term.

Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines for Adults with MS

Researchers at Queen’s University and McMaster University suggest that adults living with MS

with mild to moderate disability (EDSS 0-7) need at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity

aerobic activity (eg. walk, bike, wheel, swim) and strength training activities (eg. lift weights, use

resistance bands) twice per week to achieve important fitness benefits. Meeting these guidelines

may also reduce fatigue, improve mobility and enhance health-related quality of life.
