We all lovecreating ourown look for

our rooms, relying onour taste and imagin-ation to guide us.

But designers also play akey role, not just by in-fluencing the way we fur-nish our interiors, but byproducing their home-ware ranges to make topquality style available onthe high street.

BEAUTIFUL BOOKS: Billy bookcasecombination, from £221.20 at Ikea.

DESIGN EXPERT:Kelly Hoppen, MBE.

work of people like Sir Ter-ence Conran, Kelly Hoppenand Cath Kidston.“Create astunningdisplaywithaneatrow of inexpensive vases.

Advertiser’s announcement

P lanning the family holi-days this year couldpresent us all with some

exciting challenges. The economicdownturn not only makes theworking week a little more wor-risome but when you do have thechance to take a break, you feellike you still need to save money.

A recent survey suggested that morethan half of us will stay in the UK thisyear and while this may not initiallyseem like the most appealing prospect, for families with children there is a

world of adventure and hidden gems tobe found on British soil – and a greatdeal of them are free.

You don’t have to opt for the tra-ditional seaside holiday either. Staylocal and discover a wealth of beautifulcountryside and little known attrac-tions.

There are literally hundreds of waysto be thrifty without compromising onfun. Whether you stay for a week orjust for a day you can find excitingactivities, whatever the weather andwhatever the budget.

Blue sky thinkingBlue’s moved from the

fashion catwalk intoour homes. Follow the

passion for this regal colourand use its power to createstylish rooms.

Blues rule this summer andwith good reason as they’rebright, breezy and remind usthat clear skies and sunshine areon their way.

They’re currently a must-haveshade for a seasonal wardrobe,and should be a top choice forrooms.

Yet for too long, blues havebeen described as too cold foruse in our homes, particularly aswe have to battle against a hardNorthern light and a changeableclimate.

But that mistaken assumptioncompletely overlooks the fant-astic variation of blues, whichcan suit every room and mood.

The returnHannah Stephenson gets her handsdirty in the garden. Save money by

returning to native plants.

BRILLIANT COLOUR: The stunningblood-red aquilegia.

School of Garden Design(www.inchbald.co.uk), whotoured Chelsea with me topoint out the trends we arelikely to be seeing in thecoming year.

“Next year is going to bemuch fluffier, but in a nat-uralistic way,” he said. “Ournative species need shoutingabout – we’ll see more of theviburnum, the oak and otherplants which attract wildlife. We may still see manicuredtouches, but using nativespecies.”

Colours will be moody –fewer brilliant colours, more blood reds and blacks,he predicts. Deep purple ir-ises and blood-red aquile-gias were the prevalentplants at Chelsea, while alliums, dahlias and tulips were not.

“People are only using thingsthat are tried and trusted. Theydon’t want to splash out ondesigns that are going to be tem-porary. People are playing it quitesafe. Now is not the time to makea mistake. They want cool, calm

and subtle,” Duff says.“Fashion has gone into the ’80s,

with shoulder pads and colours, and maybe gardens will start tocome that way in the end. AtChelsea I was expecting moodyblacks and greys but I also ex-pected some big wow-factorfluorescent colours like oranges,

Gardeners are likely to re-turn to native plants thatgive value for money, with

an emphasis on low-cost options

and a merge of vegetables withinthe flower borders.

So says Andrew Duff, director ofgarden design courses at InchbaldKennedy

of the nativeswhich is what is happening in fashion – butnot in the garden.

“But we are much more conscious aboutwhat materials we are using. Now we will seea bigger sweep of British natives coming in.

“There’s a lot of black – black walls, blackfencing, black grasses – which is great for ourgrey skies. And there are some lovely bloodreds. Black gives a great deal of depth to asmall space. In a small garden it can be reallyeffective.

“Glaucous blue yuccas work well in front ofa matt black wall, and another great trick toexaggerate depth is to plant small-leavedplants at the back and large at the front. Ittricks the eye into thinking things are furtheraway.”

People are going to be growing more plantsfrom seed because of the ongoing ‘grow yourown’ campaign and the economic climate, hepredicts.

“We may see a revival of the old species, such as purple runner beans, the blue car-rots, which naturally have a better colourfoliage,” Duff says.

“Mixing the vegetables in the border isreally nice. It can work well. Space is at apremium and this is a good compromise, soyou can have something pretty and havevegetables.”

The grassy, fluffy foliage of fennel worksbeautifully in flower borders, adding textureand movement, while the deep foliage ofother vegetables can provide a good contrastin the flowerborder, alongwithpretty flower-ing herbs such as chives and thyme.

GARDENING GURU: Andrew Duff, director of garden design courses atInchbald School of Garden Design.

Ultimately, our gardens will reflect the releasefrom the current stranglehold of the recession.

“Gone are the days of carefully manicuredgardens,” Duff says. “There’s a more roughand ready approach, a return to allowingthings to look slightly out of place. Our houseshave become very ordered and structured, and the garden will give us a release fromthat.”

More power to your patioIf ever there was a time to

make the most of youroutdoor space, it’s this

year.Tight budgets and the threat of

viruses, as well as a growingreluctance to stamp a carbonfootprint all over the globe, willalmost certainly result in more ofus enjoying time in our own gar-dens this summer.

Fortunately, the choice ofgarden furniture and accessorieshas never been better, andthere’s no longer any need tosettle for uncomfortable, wobblyseats or a conventional diningset.

Liz Murphy, associate editor ofHouse Beautiful, said: “Once thedomain only of the keen garden-er, our gardens have become ex-tensions of our homes.

“Most of us rush to sit outside atthe first glimpse of spring sun-

shine, andwewantourgardens tofeel as comfortable as our livingrooms, equipped with everything

from sofas to coffee tables.”Open-plan kitchens opening on

to decks and patios is an es-

tablished trend, she says, and this creates the needfor the view from the back of the house to look asgood as the front.

Rather than grabbing the first sunlounger orpatio set you see, she advises that when planning aroom outdoors you start from the same basic pointas you would when creating an indoors room.
