WELCOME!

Dear Student Member, Welcome. We are delighted to welcome you to your professional home. The Inner Temple is committed to providing you with educational experience that will enhance your understanding of the profession, provide you with news skills and knowledge and complement the learning you gain on the Bar Professional Training Course. Your Inn is not only about the education and support we will provide you during your time as a student member, it is also about the lifelong learning that we aim to provide. As part of your vocational training and also as an introduction to the Inn, we are holding a compulsory Introductory Weekend on Friday 4 October and Saturday 5 October 2019. This comprises an Introductory Evening on the Friday and a Presentational Skills Course on the Saturday. At the Introductory Evening you will hear from a panel of speakers about life at Inner Temple, be provided with further information and application details for the Inn’s educational Qualifying Sessions and student schemes and have the opportunity to meet some of the Inn’s members over informal drinks. The dress code for the Introductory Evening is dark suits. The Presentational Skills Course is led by professional drama teachers and is a great opportunity to improve your presentational skills. There will be a morning and afternoon session for this course, of which you can only attend one. When booking online, you will need to select which one you would like to attend. Please note that places on these sessions are allocated on a first come, first served basis, so please make sure to book early to ensure a place on your preferred session. You will need to wear casual clothing, suitable for physical activity, for the course. If for any reason you are not commencing the BPTC this autumn or if you are studying at a London BPTC Provider, we would be most grateful if you could inform us so that we may amend our records. There is a different, mid-week, Introductory Evening for London students. Please contact us at the above address or email [email protected] The Education and Training Team are here to provide you with support, advice and guidance and along with the whole Inn we want to create a friendly and support environment. We look forward to welcoming you to the Inner Temple at your Introductory Evening.

PROJECT PEGASUS

Work is now well underway on the Inner Temple’s vision for a vital redevelopment of its main building and Hall. Project Pegasus is seen by the Inn as a unique opportunity to provide accommodation, which will support the activities of the Bar for generations to come to create attractive, flexible space with state-of-the-art facilities for the delivery of education and training programmes for students, pupils and practitioners. The revitalisation of the Inn will secure its long-term future and ensure members, and the people who use the Inn, have the services and facilities to support a vibrant legal profession. Project Pegasus includes the following:

- The creation of a high-quality Education and Training Centre for students and practitioners which provides an auditorium, training rooms and associated break-out space within the third and fourth floors of the extended building.

- Improvements to the basement kitchen and staff areas. - Re-allocation and refurbishment of offices within the Treasury Building and which

relate to the core functions of the building: Education and Training, Library, Catering and the Treasury Office itself.

- Extension and enhancements to circulation including access stairs, escape stairs, lifts, WCs and support areas.

- Enhanced environmental, mechanical and electrical installations to improve building performance and meet the requirements of contemporary, high quality education space.

- Improved storage. - Maintenance of existing services within the formal rooms of the Inn and the lower,

remodelled level of the library. Project Pegasus will be completed in 2021. Until then, the Inn will continue to deliver its entire Education and Training programme, with the only difference being that most London-based activities will not be in Treasury Building and Hall. Some activities will continue in the Inn’s Garden during July and Call will remain in the Temple Church with the reception nearby. Most displaced education activities will be at King’s College London, nearby Aldwych or at the Law Society on Chancery Lane. A temporary Library is situated at 10 Fetter Lane, a few minutes’ walk from Inner Temple, and continues to provide a full range of services to users. The Inn’s collegiate events are taking place in a selection of prestigious nearby venues.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES to assist the Education & Training Department

and gain qualifying sessions

TEACHER TRAINING DAY Saturday 28 September 2019

Time: 9.15am – 4.15pm Venue: King’s College London

WORTH 2 QUALIFYING SESSIONS

Each year the Education and Training Department runs a training course for established practitioners who wish to become advocacy trainers for the Inn, and we recruit new BPTC students to assist with these sessions.

You will be required to play witness and counsel in some simple cases,

preparing and performing short examinations-in-chief/cross examinations or closing speeches. Our trainee trainers will then give you

feedback on your advocacy and tips on how to improve.

You do not need any previous experience – in fact it is better if you have never done any advocacy before, as it gives them more points they can

pick you up on. The better you are, the harder it is for them!

The day is an excellent opportunity to get feedback in a friendly, supportive environment – remember, it is the trainee trainers who are

being assessed, not you as volunteers!

Lunch will be provided, as well as tea, coffee and pastries on arrival.

To book, please login to the members section of the website

INNER TEMPLE STUDENT SOCIETIES

A WELCOME FROM MASTER HODGE - CHAIR, STUDENT SOCIETIES’ SUB-COMMITTEE

On behalf of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, may I take this opportunity to welcome you as a Student Member of the Inn. You are now part of a great institution, which has as its principal purpose the education and training of the next generation of barristers. However, the Inn is much more than simply a college of further education. There are numerous ways in which you can become involved in many extra-curricular activities and I would very much encourage you to take up as many opportunities as you can, subject of course to your ongoing studies. The Students’ Association, Mooting Society, Debating Society and Drama Society will all be holding a number of events during the year. Should you have any queries or questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Presidents of each of the Societies. I very much look forward to meeting you in due course.

INNER TEMPLE STUDENTS ASSOCIATION (ITSA)

ITSA is one of 4 Inner Temple student societies. All students are automatically members of ITSA and are invited to all events. ITSA hopes to achieve a number of aims: • To promote collegiality, especially between both In- and Out-of-London students; • To help Inner Temple Students maximise their enjoyment of their GDL/BPTC year(s); • To provide a voice for the students within the Inn; • To provide a welcome break from GDL/ BPTC work and the hunt for pupillage.

This year has seen a number of events including social nights, a Burns Night Supper, and a Grand Summer Ball. Barristers and Benchers attend our events, and our Inn is touted as the best for students. Whatever your background, interests and ambitions, if you have plenty of drive and enthusiasm this is a great committee to get involved with. If you want to stand for a position or just want more information, come and speak to us at the Introductory Evenings.

How do I get involved? All new students are invited to kick off their year on the BPTC with ITSA welcome drinks immediately following the Introductory Evening. More information will be provided on the day. If you are interested in putting yourself forward for election to the ITSA Committee, please email us on the address listed below for a copy of the application form. Candidates will then be selected by the outgoing Committee based on their suitability for the role applied for. Roles on the ITSA Committee are:

Role Responsibilities

President The President will be responsible for overseeing the running of the whole society and will make the final decisions regarding all events and plans.

Vice President The Vice President is responsible for supporting the President, as well as the other members of the society.

The Treasurer is required to ensure that ITSA’s finances are in order and will be required to carry out a litany of tasks, such as: budgeting for the events that we host; ensuring that spending is controlled and accounted for; ensuring invoices are paid; reimbursing committee members for any expenses incurred; and submitting quarterly reports and an annual budget.

Secretary The role of Secretary is very similar to that of the Vice President, in that it is largely a supporting role, but requires much less of a time commitment than the VP role

Publicity Secretary You will be required to design posters and advertising pieces for each event and will have to assist with the promotion of each event through the inns and through your academic institution

London Law School Representatives

You will be required to advertise and promote each event through your academic institutions and should assist your President in ascertaining the interests of each institution.

Regional ITSA Representatives

You will also be required to advertise and promote certain events through your regional academic institutions and should assist your President in ascertaining the interests of each institution

INNER TEMPLE DRAMA SOCIETY

The Drama Society performs two or three shows per year, usually a pantomime and an open-air summer show. Past performances have starred actors and actresses from all walks of legal life. With readings from Benchers, to leading roles being performed by practising barristers and GDL students, this society really is open to all, and a great way to make both friends and connections. It is such a fun society, and beneficial in so many ways; confidence, clarity and projection being just three skills that can be transferred to your advocacy.

How do I get involved? Roles on the Drama Society Committee are:

Roles Responsibilities

President

The president’s role has varied considerably in recent years. Some presidents have taken on significant roles in productions whether onstage or behind the scenes as writer, director or producer. In 2018/19 the president took the lead in setting up the Shakespeare contest with Middle Temple which replaced the usual summer show, working with staff and benchers from both Inns.

Vice President The primary role of the Vice President is to assist the President in their duties, liaising with members of the Inn regarding Drama Society business and issues, as well as third parties

Treasurer The Treasurer is responsible for monitoring the society’s expenditure over the course of the year.

Secretary The secretary role is primarily one of supporting the rest of the committee This year, the Drama Society will elect the new Committee in January 2020. However, if you are interested in getting involved before then, please do email us on the email address listed below. We would be delighted to hear from you!

The Drama Society is a very rewarding committee to be part of, with the additional bonus of providing plenty to talk about on pupillage and job application forms.

INNER TEMPLE DEBATING SOCIETY What is Debating?

Debating is the process of critically analysing and evaluating argument in a structured way. While debating is about speaking persuasively, it is more importantly about thinking logically. At Inner Temple we are fortunate to be part of a global British Parliamentary debating circuit. In this format, each debate is stylised as a hypothetical House of Commons debate, both procedurally and linguistically. A debate consists of four teams: two teams in proposition (the Government bench), and two teams in opposition to the motion (the opposition bench). There are two speakers in a team. The object of the debate is to use your skills of advocacy, wit and strategy to convince the judges of your case. Do so and you win. Teams are given fifteen minutes to prepare their cases once the motion is announced. Because motions can be on literally any topic of any significance – from war with Iran to public funding for the arts, and from the abolition of wigs and gowns to the restoration of debtors’ prisons. – we aim only to provide you with the underlying skills to deconstruct an issue, apply your knowledge effectively and construct a water-tight case.

Why Debate? Being an active part of the Inner Temple debating squad holds numerous benefits. We compete regularly in many of the world’s most prestigious tournaments, including the World and European Championships (held over the Christmas and Summer vacations respectively). If selected, we are fortunate to be able to meet your travel and registration expenses. In recent years we have sent members to World Championships in Ireland, Turkey, Botswana and the Philippines, and this year aim to send a delegation to Germany. Debating therefore provides a fantastic opportunity to see places and meet people from all over the world. Moreover, pupillage providers generally regard having represented your Inn at a national or international debating competition as among the best CV experience. It demonstrates a commitment to and proficiency in advocacy beyond the four corners of the BPTC. Not only is the experience useful for your CV, it is inherently worthwhile for the skills you will develop: to think quickly and analytically; to speak with confidence; and to apply your knowledge of the world to a range of factual scenarios.

How do I get involved? We hold training sessions in Inner Temple once a week during term time at 6.30pm in 3 King’s Bench Walk. Whether you’re a world champion or a complete novice, and whether you want to compete regularly or simply attend the occasional workshop, we aim to provide training and feedback that is both critical and constructive. Roles on the Debating Society Committee are:

Role Responsibilities

President The President is primarily in charge of running weekly training sessions and making sure the committee runs smoothly. The President should also be in charge of selecting teams for international competitions and the Rawlinson debate.

Treasurer Manage the society’s finances. Set a budget for the year. Manage expenses. Monitor cash flow and expenditure to ensure that the budget is running smoothly

Internal Debate Co-ordinator

Responsible for organising the Debating Open. This is a competition open to teams nationally. It takes place in mid-January each year over a weekend

External Debate Co-Ordinator

The External Debate Co-Ordinator sends debaters to national contests (international contests are organised by the presidents as they need to be booked over a year in advance).

Public Speaking Co-ordinator

Responsible for running the public speaking competition in April-May.

General Secretary The secretary is in charge of keeping notes at meetings, and organising the meetings themselves.

Social Secretary Is in charge of organising socials throughout the year. They must organise socials after the debating open on the Friday and Saturday night

To apply to join the committee send a CV and covering letter to [email protected] before 11 October 2019. Your application will be considered by the existing committee and they will assess your suitability by reference to your experience and commitment. Many members of the society and even the committee had no prior debating experience, so if you want to get involved you have every chance even if you have never debated before

INNER TEMPLE MOOTING SOCIETY What is Mooting?

Moots are legal problems in the form of fictitious cases. Appearing before the Bench are two teams of two Counsel– a Senior and Junior Counsel on each. During the making of submissions Counsel will routinely be asked a number of questions by the judge(s) relating to their submissions. Judges for the Inner Temple’s Mooting Competitions are always barristers and in the final rounds, if you are lucky, you will be judged by a High Court or Appellate Court Judge. Areas of law governing the moot problems will vary with each competition; however, the internal competitions are usually based on the core legal areas (e.g. crime, contract, property etc). Of course, winning the moot is not the same as winning the arguments. It really is a case of how you play the game rather than whether you win or lose. Clarity of argument and expression, imaginative construction of flawless legal argument and effective presentation are the key to winning a moot.

Why Should I get involved?

The Inn’s mooters compete in some of the world’s most prestigious mooting competitions; for instance, last year the Inn met the travel and registration expenses for the teams representing it at a number of prestigious competitions such as the Jessup, Marcianum and Telders Moots. In recent years we have sent our mooters to Vienna, Hungary, Dublin and Washington DC. Mooting therefore provides a fantastic opportunity to see places and meet people from all over the world. We also provide, with help from the Inn, a series of mooting training sessions; host the Lawson Moot, our internal competition for all members of the Inner Temple and organise the Inner Temple IV.

How to get involved in Mooting Society Committee? You are welcome to join the Mooting Society as a member to attend meet-ups and competitions or take a more active role and sit on the Mooting Society Committee. Available roles on the Mooting Society Committee are:

Role Responsibilities

President Responsible for overseeing the work of the committee as a whole and assisting individual committee members in their respective events.

Vice President The VP role is mainly supporting the President, and the other members of the society

Treasurer

The Treasurer is key to ensuring the Committee can deliver on its promises to members and continue to facilitate opportunities for students to excel. The Treasurer is responsible for ensuring that the Mooting Society’s finances are in order.

Clerk

If you are skilled in social media and communications this role is perfect for you. The Clerk will be the responsible for facilitating communications between committee members themselves, but also with the rest of the Inn members as a whole.

Internal Moot Co-ordinator Responsible for organizing the Lawson Moot for the year. The Lawson Moot is Inner Temple’s internal mooting competition, open to all members of Inner Temple that have not secured pupillage.

Intervarsity Moot Co-ordinator

Responsible for organising the Inter-Varsity Moot. The Inter-Varsity Moot Competition is one of the biggest events in the Mooting Society calendar at Inner Temple. Hosting 30+ undergraduate teams and judged by the Benchers of the Inn, this day is important and much looked forward to.

External Moot Co-ordinator

Responsible for all aspects of external competitions entered on behalf of Inner Temple. This includes researching and selecting the competitions to be entered, selecting the members to take part and matching them up with a suitable competition, assisting with any administrative work in the lead up to competitions and supporting the team members as you see fit.

Education & Training Co-ordinator The Education and Training Co-ordinator is responsible for providing advocacy training and mooting workshops to Inner Temple members.

The Committee is selected on a CV and Covering Letter basis, with the outgoing committee deciding which of the applicants is most suited to the role. There is no requirement that applications must be for one role only, however your motivation for each role you are applying for should be addressed in the covering letter. Whilst the application is paper-based at present, the Committee may feel it necessary to hold phone/Skype interviews if the decision is difficult. To ensure as fair a decision as possible is made, the decision will be made with the same criteria, alongside individual role requirements, which are: ● Commitment to mooting/advocacy training ● Time management and organisational skills

● Professionalism and diligence 14

STUDENT SCHEMES

The Inn runs several schemes to support student members in their journey to the Bar. The Mentoring and Mock Interview Scheme provides support and guidance, both generally and also for pupillage interviews, while the Police Liaison and Marshalling schemes provide valuable experiences upon which student can draw in the course of the interview process and practice. More information on the schemes will be given to you at your Introductory Evening.

Mentoring Scheme Applications will open on Monday 7 October

The Mentoring Scheme aims to pair BPTC students with experienced practising barristers who can give advice and guidance to students as you take your first steps towards a career at the Bar. All Mentors are practitioners of at least three-years practice and are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

Mock Interview Scheme Application information will be given at the Introductory Evening

The Mock Interview Scheme aims to help students build up confidence for pupillage interviews. Students who take part in this scheme are given the opportunity to practise their interview technique in front of an established barrister, and in a practice area that they are looking to gain pupillage in. Previous participants have found this to be a very beneficial and rewarding experience, having gained valuable feedback on a one-to-one basis. The scheme has volunteer barristers based across the country and the intention is that students will be matched with a barrister in/near their noted location. Applicants must have a confirmed pupillage interview in order to take part in the scheme and are only able to avail themselves of one interview in total (regardless of the number of times they apply for pupillage).

Marshalling Scheme

Application information will be given at the Introductory Evening

The Marshalling Scheme affords you the opportunity to spend up to a week sitting with a judge in England or Wales. Over the course of your placement, the judge will show you the case papers and will discuss the case proceedings with you. The experience provides a valuable opportunity to observe the workings of the court from an entirely different perspective. Marshalling is available in Criminal, Civil, Family, Employment, Public, Administrative and Commercial areas of Law. The Scheme is open to students in their BPTC year and to pupils and places are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Police Liaison Scheme

Application information will be given at the Introductory Evening

This scheme gives BPTC students the opportunity to experience the day-to-day running of a police station and/or accompany officers on patrol. Participating police stations are predominantly in London but we are hoping to expand the scheme to other areas of the country.

Inner Temple Rules for Student Events Qualifying Sessions Qualifying Sessions form a vital part of a student’s journey in training to become a barrister. All students who undertake vocational training for the Bar are required to be members of an Inn. Qualifying Sessions, which take place alongside a student’s vocational training, provide opportunities for professional and ethical development which complements and builds on a student’s academic and vocational education and forms a bridge to the final component of Bar training, pupillage. Qualifying Sessions also provide opportunities for a student to enhance their understanding of the role of barristers in the wider justice system and the rule of law. Through the provision of both practical and knowledge-based sessions, delivered by specially selected and trained members of the profession and experts, the Inns help equip students to undertake the next stage of training and to be fit and proper to serve the public as barristers. The links made with the profession through the Inns provide students with a foundation for pupillage and work-based learning but also for a career at the Bar thereafter. Currently BPTC students have complete 12 qualifying sessions in order to be called to the Bar. From September 2020 the number of Qualifying Sessions needed to be called to the Bar will change. Students can contact the Education and Training Department if they have questions about this change. The Inn’s qualifying sessions are spread across five themes and students are encouraged to undertake a cross-section of them. The themes are:

- Ethics, Standards and Values;

- Advocacy Skills;

- Legal Knowledge, Justice and the Rule of Law;

- Equality, Diversity and Inclusion; and

- Preparation for Pupillage, Career Development and Wellbeing.

The Inn recognises that its student members study the BPTC at providers across England and Wales and therefore provides a wide range of qualifying sessions at weekends as well as during the week. Students at providers outside of London can attend up to three local qualifying sessions. Until September 2020 you will be able to gain one qualifying session on your Call Night after September 2020 Call Night will no longer be a qualifying session. How to Book Please see event listing above. BPTC student members will be notified by the Inn when qualifying sessions are open for booking – please do not leave it too late to complete your qualifying sessions as this may affect the date on which you can be called to the Bar. Unless informed otherwise, BPTC students can book qualifying sessions via innertemple.org.uk/events. Please note you can only book events online up to 7 working days before an event unless stated otherwise. Attendance

- Students should arrive promptly.

- Doors will close at the time stated on the ticket or indicated in your confirmation email.

- Please provide your ticket or confirmation email on arrival if requested.

Please note that latecomers will not be permitted entry and, if attending a qualifying session event, will not gain a qualifying session so you should allow ample time for travel to the Inn/venue. If you feel that

exceptional circumstances have caused you to be late, you may discuss these by calling the Duty Porter on 020 7797 8255 or the number provided for the relevant staff member. Mobile phones must be switched off. Students must ensure that they sign the register at each qualifying session event – failure to do so will result in the qualifying session not being awarded. Your responsibilities In signing your admission declaration, you have agreed to follow the regulations and rules of the profession as prescribed by the Bar Standards Board and the Inns of Court. The Inner Temple wants to support you to gain the knowledge, skills and experience that you will need to meet the professional statement and, in doing so, become a barrister. To support your participation in our educational and membership activities, it is your responsibility:

- To be aware and active in the pursuit of equality and respect for diversity, not tolerating unlawful

discrimination in yourself or others

- To be honest in your dealings with the Inner Temple and others

- To be responsible for being effective and efficient including:

- Prioritising and being fully prepared for activities

- Allocating time efficiently to ensure that you arrive on time at events and activities

- Using the Inner Temple resources effectively and in line with the rules and policies of the Inn

(including Information technology systems)

- Keeping accurate records and files, which includes ensuring you sign registers at qualifying

sessions so that qualifying points can be awarded. It also includes maintaining records of your

qualifying sessions to ensure they are valid as qualifying sessions are only valid for up to five

years. Treating all people with respect and courtesy, regardless of their background or

circumstances.

Dress Code The dress code for all students at qualifying sessions and other student events (unless otherwise indicated) is dark suits and dark shoes, plus a dark tie for men. (When gowns are required for a qualifying session, they will be made available in the cloakrooms). Entry will be refused to any student who is not dressed appropriately. Refunds Refunds will only be given in extreme cases and at the discretion of the Inn. Failure to attend a qualifying session that has been booked must be explained in writing to the Director of Treasury Office (for Lecture Nights) or to the Director of Education (for all other Qualifying Sessions). Refunds will only be given if the Inn is notified up to seven working days prior to the event. In case of cancellation due to illness, refunds will only be given if the Inn is notified in writing immediately accompanied by a note from a GP. The Inner Temple’s Commitment The Inner Temple is committed to creating a safe and inclusive culture and will take actions to prevent and respond to bullying, harassment, and discrimination from happening. Please inform us in the event you encounter any examples of these, so that we can support you appropriately. Further details of our relevant policies can be found on innertemple.org.uk.
