At Harbor, we are in the business of creating exceptional retail experiences. It starts with consumer insights, understanding the human emotion behind each consumer interaction. Headquartered in Grand Haven, Michigan, witha state-of-the-art 300,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Charlevoix, we’re in tune with what makes shopperstick… and we know that by designing and creating retail displays, fixtures and environments that give them more ofwhat they want, we can make life better for them—and for you.

Petoskey

Petoskey is a picturesque Lake Michigan shoreline city long known as a paradise by the summer visitors who never fail to return year after year.

It’s no mystery to local residents why they come. There’s the bright blue waters in Little Traverse Bay, charming downtown shops and abundant fine dining and cultural events.

And Petoskey is the center of a wonderful Northern Michigan region. Bay View, north of downtown Petoskey, offers a window to Victorian and Queen Anne architecture and a long-standing music festival open to the public. Then there’s Bay Harbor, along the shoreline south of Petoskey, where stunning Lake Michigan views and stellar shopping is offered.

FARMERS MARKETThe farmers market in Petoskey runs 8:30 a.m.-

12:30 p.m. Fridays, June 21-Oct. 4. The market is set up on the block of Howard Street between Mitchell and Michigan streets, and the vendors offer local fruits,

vegetables, flowers, cheeses, breads, meat and fish.

A series called Petoskey Rocks! is scheduled again for this summer. The ongoing event runs 6-9 p.m. Fridays, June 14-Aug. 9, and features music, a movie in the park and downtown shopping and dining. A schedule is online at www.petoskeydowntown.com.

Incredible variety in music is performed at Bay View Association’s various summertime concerts. The faculty artist series starts at 8 p.m. most Wednesdays, June 19-Aug. 7; vespers concerts are 8 p.m. Sundays, June 16-Aug. 11; and “On the Rocks” pop concerts are 8 p.m. several Saturdays between July 6-Aug. 3. BEACHESPetoskey’s Bayfront Park is

a small city beach not far from downtown. Adjacent is Festival Place, a large swath of grass that is ideal for a picnic or kite flying.

Perhaps the most popular beach spot in the area is Petoskey State Park along M-119. The facility provides more than a mile of sandy

shoreline along Little Traverse Bay, accessible not only by vehicle, but also by those biking, skating or walking the Little Traverse Wheelway. Additionally, the beach concession will be open with bike and kayak rentals.

TRAILSRound Lake Preserve is found

along Little Traverse Wheelway near Petoskey State Park, a 58-acre land preserve with 1.5 miles of trail frontage on Round Lake.Little Traverse Conservancy helped the city of Petoskey acquire the Skyline Trail parcel and construct an overlook platform that offers views of the Petoskey region. Now it is part of the North Country Trail system southeast of town, off Krause Road.

Seven miles east of Petoskey is the Allan and Virginia McCune Preserve, which features three miles of trail and frontage on

Minnehaha Creek. Biking is allowed.

Preserve maps for the above listed areas are available by calling (231) 347-0991 or visiting ww.landtrust.org.

Stretching about 26 miles from Harbor Springs to Charlevoix is the Little Traverse Wheelway, a favored destination for non-motorized activities. The paved surface varies from 6 to 10 feet wide, with local routes that connect to the end towns. The route is perfect for biking, walking, running and inline skating. Popular vistas include the bluffs between Petoskey and Bay Harbor, and along Bayfront Park in Petoskey.

The Petoskey-Mackinaw City Trail is a largely unimproved trail that runs 35 miles between the two cities. It is set along a former railroad bed, beginning at Spring Lake Park along M-119, then cuts through Conway, Oden, Alanson,

Pellston, Levering and Carp Lake before it ends at the trailhead off of Shepler Drive in Mackinaw City. This trail provides easy access to the Michigan Fisheries Visitors Center in Oden and Wilderness State Park in Carp Lake, among other attractions.

Trail maps for the above are available by calling Top of Michigan Trails Council at (231) 348-8280.

Near downtown Petoskey is the Bear River Valley Recreation Area, which features the Bear River non-motorized and nature trails. The non-motorized area is a stretch of paved, ADA-accessible trail that runs for more than a mile between Lake and Sheridan streets, which is perfect for biking. Bordering both sides of the river are about 1.5 miles of gravel and boardwalk trails. The North Country Trail routes through the valley then continues to Bayfront Park. n

Harbor SpringsThe farthest northwest

corner of Lower Michigan is accented by the shoreline towns of Harbor Springs,

Good Hart and Cross Village, among the most charming and pictorial communities around.

Not only are scenic land and waterscapes at every turn, but the area offers farmers markets, museums and concerts. The famous M-119 and its Tunnel of Trees twist and turn northward through Good Hart and Cross Village, peppered with many turn-outs and boutiques to delight both visitors and residents.

FARMERS MARKETFresh vegetables, in-season

fruits and flowers can be found at the Harbor Springs farmers market 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays on Main Street in Harbor Springs. The first market will be June 16, and the season will run through mid-October, depending

on the season’s bounty. After Labor Day, the market reduces to just Saturdays.

Good Hart Market Days is an annual tradition, with markets set up on the property of the Good Hart General Store. They offer handmade goods and crafts, along with fresh produce and live entertainment from local musicians. The market days will run from 2-5 p.m. on Saturdays from June 29 through the end of the fall color season.

BEACHESZorn Park in Harbor Springs

is home to the city beach, with a marked swimming area that includes a raft to which to swim. Lifeguards are on duty there 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily during the open season of mid-June through Labor Day. Facilities include restrooms, picnic tables and changing rooms, along with concessions.

Harbor Springs even provides a dog-friendly waterfront at Zoll Street Beach, found between Wequetonsing and Walstrom’s marina.

Near Good Hart are the secluded Church Beach and Readmond Township Beach, both accessible via Lambkin Road. Church Beach gets its name because of its proximity to St. Ignatius Church.

ADVENTUREHarbor Springs can be viewed

from an entirely different angle with Skydive Harbor Springs.

The company is based at the Harbor Springs airport and the drop zone is over 2426 Quick Road in Harbor Springs. The business offers jumps from either 8,000 or 12,000 feet, as well as jumps above Traverse City during the annual National Cherry Festival.

Those 18 years and older can sign up for tandem jumps and solo training also is available. More information is at (231) 242-8822 or online at www.skydiveharborsprings.com.

Soar through the canopy of foliage or zip through open valleys at Boyne Highland Resort’s Zipline Adventure in Harbor Springs.

The zipline is in its fourth year and offers seven different lines, the highest at 55 feet and the longest at 1,300 feet, as well as twin zip lines on which to race.

Pool is another indoor option for families when rainfall wins out over sunshine. Hours, rates and more details for the pool at the local high school are at (231) 526-4824 or online at www.harborps.org under the link for community pool.

Farmyard fun is the expectation at Pond Hill Farm, five miles north of Harbor Springs. Children can feed the animals and fish, hike the trails and taste the fresh produce. Open daily from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. More information is at (231) 526-3276.

TRAILSThe Offield Family Preserve

is between Harbor Springs and nearby ski resorts, a gift to the Little Traverse Conservancy several years ago. It offers several miles of trails across 390 acres.

Goodhart Farms Preserve features 7.5 miles of trails ideal for

hiking, biking and horseback riding. The whole preserve is 665 acres.

North of Harbor Springs is the Stutsmanville Bog, a natural feature likely formed by a glacial feature called an ice block depression. The place features a short, fern-lined trail, with benches and interpretive signs for environmental education. Visitors should park on the east side of State Road, just before Stutsmanville Road.

Preserve maps for the above areas are available at (231) 347-0991 or online at www.landtrust.org.

Visitors to Boyne Highlands Resort also have 24 miles of wide and wooded trails that allow for easy bicycling, as well as more challenging routes from the top of the hills and Boyne Highlands Bike Park. The park includes banked turns, jumps and narrow passages. n

But that’s not all. Charlevoix also offers abundant on-land activities for visitors and residents all summer long. And if you arrive by land, curbside petunias lead the way to downtown, where many charming shops and restaurants are found.

FARMERS MARKET Charlevoix’s farmers market

sets up from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. each Thursday, on Bridge Street alongside East Park. The season runs from early June through October, depending on the length of the growing season.

provides five miles of shoreline just south of Charlevoix, along with 2,678 acres to explore.

The north side of Charlevoix offers Mount McSauba with its rustic beach. There is a small parking lot off a pass to the dunes, though there are no bathroom facilities.

There are three beaches within Charlevoix’s city limits — Michigan, Ferry and Depot beaches. Michigan Beach is on Lake Michigan, with its sandy shoreline near the Pine River Channel. Ferry and Depot beaches are found on Lake Charlevoix, both popular sandy stretches.

All three beaches inside the city provide bathroom facilities, picnic areas, playgrounds and lifeguards, though concession stands are at Ferry and Michigan beaches.

Pavilions are available to rent at the city’s beaches. Call (231) 547-3253 or visit www.cityofcharlevoix.org.

ISLAND HOPPINGAmerica’s Emerald Isle is Beaver

Island, found 30 miles off Lake Michigan’s coastline in Charlevoix.

It’s a lush and natural place surrounded by Lake Michigan’s waters. Also, the island maintains a rich Irish heritage found throughout its written history, as well as its residents.

The island is marked by two distinct beacons — Beaver Head Lighthouse on the south side and St. James Lighthouse at the entrance to St. James Harbor.

There are two ways to get to Beaver Island, either by air or sea.

BoatingThe famed Inland Waterway winds

nearly 40 miles across Northern Michigan’s landscape.

A series of rivers and lakes is a top destination for boaters who look to spend a leisurely day floating through towns or who want to throttle it a bit more on some of the larger lakes.

The waterway begins with Crooked and Pickerel lakes near Petoskey, winding north to its endpoint of Lake Huron at Cheboygan. Points of interest along the way are Burt Lake, Mullett Lake

and the Indian River. There are locks on the Crooked

River at Alanson and on the Cheboygan River, just before downtown Cheboygan.

Amid smaller one- or two-day fests, some places organize week-long celebrations as signature summer events. These aren’t only opportunities for fun and revelry, but become venues for gathering together family and friends.

These community bashes often highlight the region’s lakes and countryside, agriculture and culture. It’s what Northern Michigan is all about.

Fort Michilimackinac’s first major event of the season is the free June 2 commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Ojibwa warrior attack on the colonial fort. Refreshments and remarks by invited speakers will punctuate the day, including historic interpreters who will offer a glimpse of

The tip of the mitt is home to a little town here and a little town there along every northbound highway from

Petoskey, and each offers its own brand of summer fun for visitors and residents.

Mackinaw City, Conway, Oden, Alanson, Indian River, Pellston and Wolverine provide an abundance of shopping, museums, boating, parks, hiking, concerts, beaches, adventure and family fun. There are rivers, lakes and the Inland Waterway — something to do everywhere.

Alanson offers boating fun with Crooked Lake and Crooked River, and stands at the southern end of the Inland Waterway. Boaters will find several eateries in the village.

In Indian River there is kayaking, tubing, rafting or fishing the Sturgeon or Indian rivers. Downtown offers ice cream and retail shops, while nearby there are nature preserves, Burt Lake State Park and

Cooperation Park, which offer sports fields, hiking trails and pet walks.

Pellston is along U.S. 31, a village known for its antique shops. Summerfest is a highlight of the season.

The northernmost point in Lower Michigan is Mackinaw City, a top tourist draw for decades. The city serves as the gateway both to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the long-celebrated Mackinac Island. But Mackinaw City is a destination itself, where abundant ice cream and fudge shops, retail shopping, museums and more are found within stunning views of the Mackinac Bridge and the Straits of Mackinac.

FARMERS MARKETThe farmers market in Indian

River returns 2-6 p.m. Wednesdays and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays from June 1-Oct. 30. Seasonal produce, fresh-cut flowers, syrup and honey will be available. The market is at the

Citizen’s National Bank parking lot. Pellston offers its relatively

new farmers market 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturdays at Memorial Park on Main Street, from June 15 through September’s end. Vendors offer fresh produce, artisan crafts, jams, jellies and honey.

BEACHESSturgeon Bay is remote and

filled with dune-covered beauty, a favorite spot among locals between Mackinaw City and Cross Village. The place is accessible from within Wilderness State Park, as well as Sturgeon Bay Drive. The sandy beach with its shallow water is great for a family day.

pours into Burt Lake. It features a large, sandy beach and a picnic area.

Also, the sandy beach at Burt Lake State Park is not far from where the Sturgeon River runs into Burt Lake. A state Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry.

ADVENTUREGlide above the Straits of

Mackinac with Mackinaw Parasailing. The business offers solo or tandem parasailing at 300 or 600 feet in the air.

Participants can set sail from Mackinaw City, Mackinac Island and St. Ignace, weather permitting. Mackinaw Parasailing is available for air tours 9 a.m.-8 p.m. seven days a week. More information, rates and reservations are at (866) 436-7144 or www.mackinawparasailing.com.

FAMILY FUNBig Bear Adventures offers all-

encompassing family fun in Indian River.

Kayaks and canoes are available for adventurous paddlers — paddling experience is required on the Sturgeon River, the fastest natural river in the Lower Peninsula. Trips range from 1.5 to 5 hours.

But the same river can be experienced with more stability in a raft or tube. Big Bear’s rafts have a 0-percent tipping rate, and both tubes and rafts are open to people of all ages and experience levels. Raft and tube trips range from 1 to 3.5 hours.

River trips end at a river access point within Burt Lake State Park. Those who wish to extend the day’s activities within the park — at the beach, hiking trails, playground or picnic area — can purchase a state park pass or Recreation Passport, a program available when Michigan motorists renew their license plates.

Big Bear also offers an 18-hole

adventure miniature golf course with waterfalls, hills and trees, as well as electric bumper boats with squirt guns attached. Also, a ropes challenge course keeps participants at least 12 feet off the ground, protected with a full-body harness and safety lanyard, which is always hooked into the overhead safety system.

Rates and information are at (231) 238-8181 or www.bigbearadventures.com.

A different type of show is found at the Jack Pine Lumberjack Shows in Mackinaw City. The shows aim to educate audiences about Michigan’s logging history. Events include competitions such as pole climbing, ax throwing, logrolling and cross cut sawing.

The shows, which begin Memorial Day weekend and run through Labor Day, occur daily at 7:30 p.m. at 10510 U.S. 23 West, about 1.5 miles south of Mackinaw City. The July 4 show will be at 4 p.m.

Rates and information are at (231) 436-5225 or www.jackpinelumberjackshows.com.

Historical details of trout introduction in Michigan can be learned at the Michigan Fisheries Visitors Center in Oden.

The visitor center grounds feature a refurbished train car, in which employees of the Michigan Department of Conservation would live while stocking fish around the state. A nature trail lends a glimpse at the native plants, along with fish in the creek that runs through the property.

A highlight of the center is a viewing area built into the side of a hill that allows a cross-section view of the stream and its inhabitants. The Oden State Fish Hatchery Visitor Center is at 3377 U.S. 31,

Oden, and can be reached at (231) 348-0998.

TRAILSThe Little Traverse

Conservancy offers plenty of hiking and biking trails throughout its preserves in Emmet County.

Hike and bike through the combined 482 acres of the Colonial Point/Chaboiganing preserves. Easy trails totaling 2.5 miles are near Burt Lake, east of Brutus.

Together, the Andreae and Banwell Family preserves cover 539 acres, with more than four miles of frontage on Pigeon River and 5.2 miles of trails. The Andreae features a cabin for community group use.

Preserve maps for the above are available by calling (231) 347-0991 or visiting www.landtrust.org.

The Wildwood Hills Pathway is between Petoskey and Indian River, and its access point offers parking off Wildwood Road. A favorite among mountain bikers, the area offers multiple loops totaling 9.3 miles.

About 20 miles of trails open to hiking wind through Wilderness State Park in northern Emmet County. Portions of the trails are open to biking, and the North Country Trail overlaps seven miles of the trails.

Spanning the nearly 62 miles between Gaylord and Mackinaw City is the North Central State Trail. The 10-foot-wide packed, crushed limestone surface trail offers varied terrain and easy access to Gaylord, Vanderbilt, Wolverine, Indian River, Topinabee, Cheboygan and Mackinaw City.

The Petoskey-Mackinaw City Trail is a product of the state’s Rails-to-Trails program. It’s a largely unimproved trail that runs the 35 miles between the two cities.

The trail begins at Spring Lake Park along M-119 and jogs through Conway, Oden, Alanson, Pellston, Levering and Carp Lake before ending at the trailhead off Shepler Drive in Mackinaw City. The trail provides access to the Michigan Fisheries Visitors Center in Oden and Wilderness State park in Carp Lake.

Trail maps for the two above are available through Top of Michigan Trails Council at (231) 348-8280.

ISLAND HOPPINGMackinac Island provides

thousands of visitors with a step back in time, where no motorized vehicles are permitted — save for the ferries that bring the many visitors, planes that land at the small airport and snowmobiles during winter months.

Horses and bicycles fill in as the preferred mode of transportation,

and it’s not uncommon to see people in period dress, such as women in 18th century clothing or soldiers from the same period standing guard at Fort Mackinac.

here’s always something going on in the Boyne Valley and East Jordan areas, nestled around the

beautiful Lake Charlevoix, in 2012 declared first runner-up in USA Today’s poll to find the “best lake in America.”

Loads of flourishing downtown businesses, art galleries and outdoor adventures continually lure folks to enjoy the very best of what this part of Charlevoix County offers. The region is a vacationer’s delight and a resident’s dream.

FARMERS MARKETBoyne City’s farmers market

is outdoors 8 a.m.-noon every Wednesday and Saturday, May through October, in Veterans Park, alongside Lake Charlevoix. It’s a favorite spot for shoppers to pick up fresh produce, flowers, honey, syrup, handmade goods and freshly baked treats in abundance. However, because some “things” weren’t picked up last year, market organizers decided not to permit dogs this season.

Local is the focus at East Jordan’s farmers market, whether produce or artisan wares. The market runs 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursdays, May 9 through October in Sportsman Park on M-32/Bridge Street.

Ellsworth’s farmers market expanded last year and will return as an evening event from 5-7 p.m. Tuesdays, May 28 through mid-October, across from the high school at the ball diamond, where C-48 and C-65 meet.

BEACHESThere are two parts to Melrose

Township Park in Walloon Lake,

separated by M-75. The beach side is along Walloon Lake, with a buoyed swim area and gradual, sandy slope. The other part offers a park with a play area, bathroom facilities and pavilion. There also is access to the Bear River, ideal for launching kayaks and canoes when the water is right, and a couple-mile riverwalk trail leaves from the park and parallels the river.

Young State Park features a mile and a half frontage on Lake Charlevoix, among the top-rated beaches in northwest Lower Michigan. The sandy stretch is a favorite among boaters for offshore mooring, both by campers and others.

Boyne City offers Peninsula Beach about a half-mile south of downtown. It features a marked swimming area, sand volleyball court, restrooms, picnic tables and a play area.

Charlevoix County’s Whiting Park also is found on Lake Charlevoix. It provides a half-mile of beach, hiking trails, beach

volleyball, a play area, camping and both pavilion and building rentals.

East Jordan has two beaches — Tourist Park near downtown and Elm Pointe, north of town along M-66. Both spots are on the coveted South Arm of Lake Charlevoix. Elm Pointe’s 10-plus acres includes the beach, as well as a museum and grassy spaces. Tourist Park offers 500 feet of lake frontage, along with a marked swim area, restrooms, beach volleyball, and a pavilion and rental hall.

ADVENTUREHigh ropes adventures are

found at two zipline courses in the Boyne Valley area.

No reservations are needed for the triple, but are required for the canopy tour. More details are at (231) 582-3400 or www.wildwoodrush.com.

Boyne Mountain in Boyne Falls hosts a Zipline Adventure Tour, where participants zip across hills and valleys at the resort. There are 10 lines at lengths up to 780 feet long and heights up to 50 feet. Speeds reach up to 25 mph. Days, times and reservations are at (231) 549-7256 or at www.boyne.com.

Another adrenaline-filled activity is combat paintball at Boyne Mountain in Boyne Falls, a partnership with T.C. Paintball. The paintball field is just north of the Mountain Villas and tennis facility. Reservations are required 24 hours in advance for a minimum of six players by calling (231) 350-0072. Gear rental is available.

FAMILY FUNBoth fun and education are the

goals at Raven Hill Discovery Center, 4737 Fuller Road, East

Jordan, in rural Charlevoix County between Boyne Falls and East Jordan. TRAILSThe Nathan Driggers

Preserve is right off of Boyne City-Charlevoix Road, where 75 acres provides 1.5 miles of trail.

Nearly 200 acres and 1.5 miles of Jordan River frontage are found within the three-preserve complex of the Rogers

Family, Dressel and Jordan River preserves. Located just downstream from a public boat launch, this is an ideal canoe destination. A 1.5-mile trail also is found on the Rogers Family Preserve.

Preserve maps for the above are available from Little Traverse Conservancy at (231) 347-0991 or www.landtrust.org.

Near downtown Boyne City is the more than 300-acre Avalanche Mountain Preserve. Miles of mountain biking and hiking trails wind through the woodland property, and there’s also a disc golf course.

Boyne Mountain Resort in Boyne Falls offers 32.5 miles of marked trails perfect for biking, with lift access and options to ride down from the top on paved

or natural trails. The resort also features a disc golf course.

Northeast of Boyne Falls is Spring Brook Pathway. The trailhead is located near the Chandler Hill and Slashing roads intersection, leading to miles of trails.

Cutting through the 18,000-acre Jordan River Valley is the Jordan River Pathway. The system boasts various trails, with more than 19 miles overlapping with the North Country Trail. The area is known for a range of wildlife, along with its namesake river and two magnificent overlooks — Deadman’s Hill off of U.S. 131 near Elmira, and Landslide which is along Harvey Road off of Alba Highway, reached either from U.S. 131 from the east or M-66 from the west. n

Golf

Golf is more than a pastime, it’s a way of life for ever so many.

In fact, plenty believe the scent of a freshly cut fairway, the sight of a perfectly struck and airborne golf ball and the sweet sound when the ball drops in the hole are best experienced in Northern Michigan. It’s where the courses not only provide a range from easy to challenging links, but also views of the region’s luring lakes, streams, woodlands and lakeside bluffs. It’s world class golf and it’s all around.

Most golf clubs and public courses open during spring and extend the playing season through the perfect summer weather, gorgeous autumn colors and right up until the snow flies. And there’s a place for all players: The beginner and weekend duffer, both low- and high-handicappers, social players and after-work nine-holers, plus everyone in between who swings the clubs.

This is an unscientific and subjective guide to the “best ...” golf Northern Michigan offers.

Best place to impress: Bay Harbor. Boyne Resorts’ crown jewel, just west of Petoskey off U.S. 31 established itself as one of Michigan’s, if not the Midwest’s, finest. Players are served like royalty and treated to enchanting Lake Michigan views, where 27 of the area’s finest holes are found.

Bay Harbor: (231) 439-4028.

Best test of courage: Dunmaglas in Charlevoix is not as rugged as it once was, but still requires an “A” game. Big time challenges also come at Crooked Tree near Petoskey, as well as any Boyne course, all of which can prove tough and beautiful.

Dunmaglas: (231) 547-4653.Crooked Tree: (231) 439-4030.Boyne Resorts: (800) 462-6963.

Best family rounds: Charlevoix Municipal Golf Club, Ye Nyne Olde Holles in Advance, Boyne Rapids Adventure Golf and The Mallard. Charlevoix’s course and Ye Nyne, in Advance, both provide charming old-style, nine-hole courses, plus

the atmosphere at both is relaxed. Both courses can be a challenge, but won’t punish beginners. Boyne Rapids in Boyne City is a scaled-down course with holes ranging from 15-100 yards. Another solid play in this category is The Mallard, just outside East Jordan. Each of the four courses comes down on the affordable side.

Charlevoix: (231) 547-3268.Ye Nyne: (231) 582-7609.Boyne Rapids: (231) 582-3505.The Mallard: (231) 536-3636.

Best old-time feeling: Harbor Point in Harbor Springs and Belvedere in Charlevoix. Harbor Point, which sits on a bluff overlooking Little Traverse Bay, features majestic trees and loads of charm. Carts are available, but the course is quite walkable and players will feel as though stepping back in time to the days of rumble seats. Rerouting and renovations only improved the splendid and classic layout. The Belvedere is a must-play course in Northern Michigan, if not the entire state. The former home

to the Michigan Amateur is, like Harbor Point, a trip back in time.

Harbor Point: (231) 526-2951.Belvedere: (231) 547-2611.

Best kept secret: Charlevoix Country Club and Indian River Golf Club. Charlevoix is a well-groomed, relatively young course that packs a punch with water on 11 of its 18 holes. Indian River, just east of the Emmet-Cheboygan County line, is another in the well-kept department that is cut through gorgeous tall hardwoods.

Charlevoix Country Club: (231) 547-9796.

Indian River Golf Club: (231) 238-7011.

Best on the pocketbook: The region features several good, solid plays that can be described as affordable, including The Mallard in East Jordan, Springbrook Hills and Bear River Links, both in Walloon Lake, plus Maple Ridge in Brutus and Charlevoix Golf Club. Players can experience nice, fair golf at relatively reasonable rates, and the food and service proves top notch at most of these stops.

The Mallard: (231) 536-3636.Springbrook: (231) 535-5155.Bear River Links: (231) 535-

2400.Maple Ridge: (231) 529-6574.Charlevoix: (231) 547-3268.

Best newcomer: True North in Harbor Springs. The 7,000-yard plus layout and amenities are entirely first class. Golf Digest honored course designer Jim Engh with its 2003 Architect of the Year award. True North rated the state’s No. 4 course that allows public play, and No. 8 overall.

True North: (231) 526-3300.

Best place for “name” courses: Boyne Highlands Resort features the Donald Ross

Club. Charlevoix is a well-groomed,

Memorial and Arthur Hills. The Ross is a compilation of the famed designer’s favorite holes, from Oakland Hills to Pinehurst No. 2. Hills designed courses all over the country and his layout at the Highlands is a must-play for all serious golfers. The Heather at the Highlands is as good as it gets in Northern Michigan and hosted numerous championships in its history, including the 100th Michigan Amateur two years ago.

Boyne: (800) 462-6963.

Best to settle a bet: Some golfers aren’t satisfied to play for the fun of the game and often when on the links with friends will make wagers on their skills

— whether for bragging rights or more. Chestnut Valley in Harbor Springs is the perfect venue to settle things up when competing players are squared-up after 18. Chestnut’s distinctive 19th hole, a

par 3 in the shadow of the club’s lovely log clubhouse, may be exactly what competitive friends need.

Best views: Several courses take full advantage of sweeping views of Little Traverse Bay, along with the Northern Michigan countryside. Included here are Bay Harbor, Crooked Tree, Harbor Point and Little Traverse Bay Golf Club. The view from the Little Traverse Bay restaurant and from the Bay Harbor clubhouse are breathtaking, of the picture postcard type.

Bay Harbor: (231) 439-4028.Crooked Tree: (231) 439-4030.Harbor Point: (231) 526-2951.Little Traverse: (231) 526-6200.

Best chance of return: Hidden River Golf & Casting Club. Extremely well manicured, the course is built along the meandering Maple River and is

both exceptional and unforgettable. It became the ninth member of Boyne Resort’s stable of championship layouts last year, and comes complete with a stunning log clubhouse and first-rate restaurant.

Hidden River: (231) 529-4653.

Best bet to join the elite: The Chief in Bellaire opened more than a decade ago and is now well established as a legitimate layout worth mention with the Hidden Rivers, the Little Traverse Bays and the Charlevoix Country Clubs of the Northern Michigan golf world. The unique layout features dramatic elevation changes and a variety of holes carved through its hardwoods. The signature finishing hole is a 420-yard par 4. The Chief’s sister course, Hawk’s Eye in Bellaire, is in the same league.
