All summer long, GLM becomes a summer camp, with special activities, guest stars, color days, sports, arts, and even funny snacks. See the following pages to check out specific activities for each week. Join us for a week or two, or stay for the whole summer. Don’t miss the special Opera Camp in Session 2.
Toddler Fun in the Sun(18 Months - 3 Years)The summer is a great time for new toddlers to adjust to a day away from parents and other caregivers. The fundamentals of being “in school” are learned in a loving, fun environment. Toddlers attend age-appropriate assemblies and events and enjoy their own outdoor activities such as gardening and splashing in wading pools on warm days.
Summer Fun in the Sun(Pre-K thru Kindergarten)GLM staff have planned special summertime fun for newcomers and returning students. In addition to the continuity of the Montessori classroom curriculum, teachers will include the following activities:

The story of“Rhodopis”
A Children’s Opera
Rhodopis was the daughter of a Greek farmer who lived near the city of Delphi in ancient Greece. As our story begins, it is market day in Delphi and Rhodopis and her family have come to sell their wares and to celebrate their beloved country. They make a pilgrimage to the temple to tithe 10% of their income and there they hear from the Delphic Oracle who urges the family to beware of a sailing ship. Sure enough, the family is kidnapped by pirates and taken to the island of Samos. There Rhodopis meets a fellow countryman, Aesop, who entertains her with his fables.
Rhodopis is sold as a slave to Charaxos and Maskonet, a Greek husband and wife living in Egypt. Charaxos is kind, but his wife is jealous of Rhodopis’ beauty and gives her extra chores to do while the other slaves are sent to Pharaoh’s court.
While Rhodopis is washing clothes by the Nile River, a falcon (symbol of the Sun God Horus) swoops down and steals her sandal. The falcon flies many miles away to the Pharaoh Amasis’s court and drops it in his lap. The Pharaoh is so struck by the beauty of the sandal that he vows to find and marry its owner.
Pharaoh Amasis searches far and wide. Many girls try on the sandal, but none can fit the sandal on their foot, until Rhodopis tries it on. It fits perfectly and when Rhodopis pulls its mate from the folds of her tunic, Amasis invites her to be his wife.
Despite protests that she is not Egyptian and is a slave, Amasis marries Rhodopis. Soon after their marriage, the Pharaoh dies and Rhodopis becomes Queen of Egypt. She is remembered as a beautiful, compassionate queen who showed mercy to slaves, established orphanages for children and appointed women to positions in government.
Intro to the Performing Arts Camp(Special for GLM 5 year olds only)
This program is for GLM 5 year olds, enrolled in summer day camp. Daily, for 1-1/2 hours, the children will be escorted to the performing arts building (Redwood classroom) and will then be returned to their regular GLM classrooms for ongoing activities. They will learn dances and songs from specialists and will perform in groups as ibises, crocodiles, monkeys, cats and puppies - in RHODOPIS. Arts and crafts, scenery projects and movement experiences and costumes are part of this introductory theatre program. 10 day attendance is required.
