After an extensive national search, George J. Philippides, MD has been named the new Chief of Newton-Wellesley’s Division of Cardiology, effective July 1, 2014. He succeeds G. William Dec, MD, Chief of the MGH Cardiology Division, who has served as Acting Chief of the NWH Division of Cardiology since July 1, 2013 after the retirement of Dr. Joel Rubenstein.

Dr. Philippides has the reputation of being a superb clinician, excellent leader, and outstanding teacher. He has been an attending physician at Boston Medical Center for the past 20 years and currently serves as the Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs and Chief Quality Officer for the

Boston Medical Center Cardiovascular section as well as Director of the Coronary Care Unit and Associate Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine. Dr. Philippides is also an active teacher and is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine.

He received his BA from Yale University and his MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He did his internship and residency in internal medicine at Boston City Hospital, followed by a clinical cardiology fellowship and a cardiac catheterization fellowship at Boston Medical Center. Later in his career he received a “pocket” MBA for physicians from the Boston University School of Management. He is a recipient of numerous teaching and community service awards and has been listed as a Boston Magazine “Best Doctor” and a US News and World Report “Top Doctor.”

Construction is now underway on the 2nd floor of the main hospital for the new Elfers Cardiovascular Center, scheduled to open in mid-2015. The Center will be a clinical collaboration with the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Cardiology and will offer a multidisciplinary program dedicated to the prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with cardiovascular diseases.

The Elfers Cardiovascular Center will build upon the excellence of our existing cardiovascular programs and add new services and expertise from Mass General cardiologists and vascular surgeons. The upgraded facilities will provide the best possible patient experience. The creation of such a center represents good news to those living in the region served by Newton-Wellesley.

Campaign ProgressThe Charitable Foundation is working to raise $7 Million toward the $18 Million cost to help with construction and state-of-the-art diagnostic and imaging technology. To date, a total of $6.3 Million has been raised.

“All of us know someone who has been affected by cardiovascular disease, and my family is no exception,” says William R. Elfers, whose family’s generous gift has named the Center. “This is clearly the next important step for Newton-Wellesley. This expansion will make a dramatic difference in the lives of so many in our community.”

Several other donors have stepped forward to make significant leadership gifts to the Campaign. These include the Louise and Alvin Slotnick family, Carol and Jim Taiclet, Roche Bros. Supermarkets, Roxanne and David Breazzano, and the Newton-Wellesley Hospital Auxiliary.

“We are very grateful to our campaign donors, whose generous support is making the Elfers Cardiovascular Center a reality,” said Joan Archer, President, NWH Charitable Foundation. “As the Center evolves, we’re going to be able to treat more patients and save more lives—and do that here at Newton-Wellesley.”

Please join with us to support this exciting initiative. All gifts are important and will help us reach our goal. To get involved, please contact Joan Archer at (617) 243-6243 or [email protected].

Under the leadership of Thomas Beatty, MD, Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s Maternity Program—in collaboration with Brigham & Women’s Hospital—has experienced tremendous growth over the past 10 years. Last year, over 4,000 babies were born at Newton-Wellesley, making it the third largest birthing site in Eastern Massachusetts and the fourth largest in the state. Although birth rates in Massachusetts remain constant, the demand for obstetrical services at the Hospital continues to grow. It is anticipated that growth will approach 4,500 births as more and more families come to rely on the exemplary, individualized care delivered at Newton-Wellesley.

“Newton-Wellesley Hospital is proud of its long tradition of providing excellent care for mothers and their newborns dating back to 1890 when the first child was born at the Hospital,” said Dr. Beatty. “This service is central to Newton-Wellesley’s mission as a community hospital.”

To respond to the needs of the growing patient population, construction of a new Mother and Baby Unit on the 4th floor is almost complete. This Unit will add 12 private postpartum rooms and a 13 bed nursery, expanding capacity by 33%, which will ensure that mothers, babies and families always have access to care within a warm community hospital setting.

Partner with UsThe NWH Charitable Foundation seeks to raise $1 million toward this expansion’s $3.3 million total cost. In the current reimbursement system, the Maternity Service is only slightly profitable; therefore, philanthropy is critically needed to help with the cost of this expansion. Naming opportunities have been developed, and we invite you to partner with us in our mission to take care of patients and their families as we would a beloved family member. For more information, please contact Joan Archer at (617) 243-6243 or [email protected].

To strengthen the fiscal stability of the Hospital, the Charitable Foundation is raising funds to establish endowed positions for Chairs and Chiefs in several key clinical areas. This is especially important given that these positions are at the very core of our patient mission.

The Jack Forté family recently gave $1 Million to endow the Chief of Pulmonary Medicine in memory of Sally Forté, a grateful patient and close friend of Gustave A. Laurenzi, MD, former Chief of Pulmonary Medicine, who cared for Mrs. Forté. Currently, Dennis Beer, MD, holds this position.

Endowing this position relieves the operating budget of the Hospital and supports the leadership of the Chief, including the teaching and mentoring of physicians and other health professionals in training.

“We are most grateful to the Forté family for their long-standing commitment to Newton-Wellesley’s teaching mission,” said Joan Archer. “This gift honors Sally’s life as well as Dr. Laurenzi’s

distinguished career as an outstanding physician and teacher. The gift will enhance pulmonary medicine and medical education at the Hospital and creates a fitting legacy, which we hope will inspire others.”

The Forté family had previously funded the Gustave A. Laurenzi, MD Visiting Professorship, which brings in an outstanding leader in medicine to visit the Hospital every year for several days of teaching. “Their philanthropy has done much to move our medical education program forward,” added Joan Archer.

If you or a family member has benefited from the work of caregivers at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, then you know the integral role the Hospital plays in bringing high quality compassionate care to patients and families in our community.

Did you know you can help ensure Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s future while achieving your own personal, financial, and estate planning goals? If you have the desire to give to the Hospital but need to retain income during your lifetime or that of a loved one, a Charitable Gift Annuity might be a good option for you.

With a Charitable Gift Annuity, you donate assets to Newton-Wellesley Hospital in exchange for annual payments for life. These secure paymentsare fixed in amount and will not vary with market fluctuations (see chart for an example). The amount of the payment depends on your age at the time you set up the gift annuity. What is left at the end of the gift plan will benefit the Hospital to continue its work and vision.

You may also consider deferring your payments to years when income is needed more, such as retirement. You receive a substantial charitable income tax deduction in the year that the gift is made, but because payments are deferred you enjoy a high payout rate later. A deferred gift annuity is an excellent way to make a gift and receive a charitable income tax deduction while providing income for the future.

For more information on how a Charitable Gift Annuity or a Deferred GiftAnnuity would work for you, please visit www.nwh.org/plannedgiving or contact Joan Archer or Liz Gianakos at (617) 243-6751 or [email protected].

Team NWH Strong!

Charitable Gift AnnuitiesPlanned Giving Update

Marathon Fever was in full force on Patriots’ Day, April 18, 2014. Team NWH, 20 runners strong, participated in the 118th Boston Marathon, raising funds for the Vernon Cancer Center Patients’ Fund. This Fund enables our Integrative Support Services caregivers to provide urgently needed “emergency” assistance to financially vulnerable cancer patients, helping them get through treatment without additional stress.

This year, Team NWH raised over $75,000 – a record-breaking amount! Top fundraisers were Ed Seeker of Wellesley ($8,596), Kelsey Merriam of Jamaica Plain ($7,200), Heidi Angle, MD, of Wellesley ($6,977), Joan Meagher of Salem ($6,700) and Elizabeth Dias of Taunton ($5,358).

Congratulations to all the members of Team NWH for your fundraising success and most importantly, for your amazing accomplishment of running the Boston Marathon! It was a day none of us will forget.

Many thanks to all who supported Team NWH!

Knitting for BabiesOver the past few years, Kay Gallant, 95, has knitted over 200 caps for the newborn babies at Newton-Wellesley. She and several friendsat North Hill started knitting caps several years ago, but now she is the only one still knitting. We are so grateful for her devotion to our newborns!

Birthday GivingRyan Nadeau of Wellesley turned 8 last year, and in lieu of birthday gifts, he asked his friends to bring toys and games for the kids in the Hospital. What a wonderful lesson in giving to others – Ryan and his friends have learned the true meaning of philanthropy.

Barmakian Family TraditionThe Barmakian Family of Walpole brought toys, games, coloring books, and fleece blankets for the kids on the Pediatric floor. For the past 18+ years, the family has been making this wonderful donation in memory of Nancy Barmakian’s sister, who passed away in 1990 after an extended hospital stay.

Candy for CancerDavid Mendelsohn, who attends Newton North High School, wanted to do something to raise awareness of the the excellent care provided at the Vernon Cancer Center. So he decided to sell candy at school to raise funds. To date, he has donated over $1,500 to the Center!

Goody Bags for the KidsCatching Joy teamed up with The Blue Bunny Bookstore in Dedham for a special opportunity for kids to make snowman goody bags for children in the Hospital. The bags contained coloring books, crayons, markers, notebooks, pencils, play dough, puzzles and little toys/trinkets.

Newton-Wellesley Hospital Charitable FoundationAnnual Donor Report – Fund Year 2013

(October 1, 2012 – September 30, 2013)

Dear Friends,

We are tremendously grateful for your generous support of Newton-Wellesley Hospital this past Fund Year. With over

$8.78 Million in gifts and pledges from individuals, corporations and foundations, your philanthropy has enabled the

Hospital to continue providing exemplary care to our community.

As a non-profit institution, we must depend on your philanthropy to help provide the “margin of excellence” that

distinguishes Newton-Wellesley Hospital from other teaching community hospitals in Massachusetts. In fact, since

the Foundation was established in 1999, over $100 Million has been raised to help transform the Hospital’s facilities,

technology and programs. Our patients are the direct beneficiaries of your generosity.

Thank you again for your support. You are helping to ensure that Newton-Wellesley Hospital will continue to fulfill

its mission of treating and caring for our patients and their families as we would a beloved family member.

Sincerely,
