Sunscreen• Many companies make “organic” sunscreens that

contain synthetic chemicals.• Sunscreens protect from sunburn but do little to nothing

to prevent skin cancer or accelerated skin aging. • The simple truth is beyond the knowledge that

sunscreens prevent sunburns, little else is known about the safety and effectiveness of sunscreen lotions and sprays.• Currently there are no final U.S. Sunscreen safety

regulations.

Chemicals to Avoid! There are a host of chemicals in our skin care and sunscreen is no exception. Here are two places to go where you can read about the chemicals to avoid. (There are too many for me to cover!)

Titanium Dioxide Titanium dioxide has recently been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as an IARC Group 2B carcinogen ''possibly carcinogen to humans''. It is present in almost every sun block.

The Jury is still out on this one…but better safe than sorry!

Page 12: Summer Essentials

Zinc Oxide• An element drawn from the earth• Helps block UV Rays• Naturally occurring chemical• Look for the NON Nano Zinc Oxide or Micronized Zinc

Oxide• The Nano can pass through the skin easily and can

generate free radicals which damage the skin.

Page 13: Summer Essentials

Precautions•We need vitamin D

•Stay out of the noon sun•Cover up, wear sun hats

Bug Sprays• Recent bug spray studies link chemicals in bug sprays to Parkinson's

disease.

• The Environmental Protection Agency has discovered chemicals that kill bugs can lead to infertility, birth defects, and miscarriages, stillbirths,

learning disorders, aggressive behavior, cancer of the breast, prostate and lymphatic system.

• The most common insecticide in store-bought bug spray is DEET (N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide). This powerful insecticide is in over 400 repellents.

It can peel paint, damage rayon and spandex, and melt plastic.
