Beginning Watercolor Painting with Pam Ages 18+This class is designed for beginner students and will focus on the fundamentals of basic watercolor technique and materials and on personal expression in painting. Students will explore still life, landscape, and incorporating a “figure” into their work as well as the use of shape, line, value, color, and texture to create good composition. Students will be exposed to both contemporary and master artists in history, as they explore painting styles and influences leading to the development of watercolor as a modern American art form. Drawing from the Figure Ages 18+ The focus of the class will be on drawing the clothed figure. Students will be taught to achieve correct proportions and capture the essence of the model. Class will include lectures, demonstrations, drawing exercises, and instructive critiques. Materials List: Recommend drawing with charcoal (vine charcoal in thin and thick widths), however, you may use your choice of drawing implement (pencil, crayons, pastels, paint, etc.) as well as your own kneaded eraser and chamois cloth. Your papers should include a large newsprint pad and a few sheets of light gray toned Canson Mi-Teintes paper. Pastel and Pastel Portraits Ages 18+This class is designed for intermediate students with some background in drawing or painting. Students will learn about the fundamental materials and a variety of techniques for working in pastel. The focus of the class will be on materials, techniques, design, subject matter and personal expression. Students may work from their own original photographs, still life set ups, drawings, or their imagination. Or they may choose to work along with the instructor using the same reference photos and composition. Emily Christoff-Flowers has a BFA from Bowling Green State University and is a Pastel Society of America member.

Holland Wentz Etheridge holds a BA in Fine Arts from W&M and has 10 years teaching experience.

Jerry Gammon has been photographing since 1995 and teaching photography for several years.

James Warwick Jones has a BS in Art Education from ODU and has 40 years of teaching experience.

Pam Oden has studied and exhibited widely and is a Virginia Watercolor Society member.

Mary Lee Ruff is a widely exhibited, award winning artist, whose work is in the Hampton Arts permanent collection.

Wildlife and Pet Portraits

Ages 18+Students will learn to draw lifelike animals or wildlife on Velour papers. Using soft and hard pastels and pastel pencils students will use their own photos or photos provided by the instructor to create luminous images on soft velour paper. Advanced students may work independently if they wish. The class will feature lectures, demonstrations, individual instruction and critiques. Velour paper will be provided by the instructor. Digital Photography: The Basics and Beyond Ages 18+Ready to learn how to use your digital camera to make some great photos? This class will cover the fundamentals of good image making. We will start with your camera's Auto button and advance to shooting in Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual modes. The class will also cover the Five (and only five) Things You Can Do with Any Photo, the importance of composition and self-critique plus shooting tips to make your photography more enjoyable. There will be an optional shooting assignment between weeks 2 and 3. Please bring a digital camera. Fort Monroe Photo Walk and Studio Critique Ages 18+

This class is for photographers who would like to enjoy an early evening-into-night photo walk at historic Fort Monroe followed up the next week with a classroom critique of up to 10 photos made by each participant during the walk. The first class will meet at the Gazebo, next to the Chamberlin, at 6:30pm. After a brief orientation, we will walk as a group to some of the famous landmarks at the Fort, ending the walk at a great spot for a sunset, probably around 9:15pm. The second class will be held at The Charles Taylor Visual Arts Center from 6:30 to 9:00pm. The instructor will critique the photos using guidelines that will be given to each student as a handout. The photos will be critiqued anonymously unless the photographer wishes to identify their shots during the critique. The class is for photographers of all skill levels. Participants will need a DSLR camera where they can shoot on the full auto or custom settings. A tripod would be helpful, but not required.
