The latest project in Pamporovo is the newly opened Bike Park for mountain biking ‘Velo Park Pamporovo’, which was completed in cooperation with Concept Creative. It was officially opened in the summer of 2012 and quickly managed to become one of leading bike destinations in Bulgaria. The park has totally 5 specialized and separate mountain bike routes with a total length of 20 km, suitable for all ages and abilities. The routes are filled with various obstacles and twists as bends, jumps, various wooden structures unique to Bulgaria and marked routes with diverse difficulty levels, aimed at cross country discipline. Those who do not have their own bike can rent on the spot the latest models of bikes ‘Drag’. In the bike check-room of arena Studenetz are offered various classes of bikes – from the most ordinary for a walk to fully equipped bikes for downhill, suitable for professionals.

Qualified guides are available to accompany every biker on routes of the Bike Park. Velo Park Pamporovo quickly managed to establish itself as one of the most visited places by cyclists and tourists. Already in its first season, the Bike Park hosted several sporting events, including a national championship in mountain biking in categories downhill and cross country, workshop on mountain training and demonstrations of famous names of the world bike stage.

In the new season will be build three new routes within the Park to complement the variety of routes. In 2013 are planned two international competitions, one of them Balkan Cup, during which for the first time we will see the first XCo race listed in the calendar of UCI.

1. Excursions to “Devil`s Throat” cave - “Yagodinska” cave - “Eagle’s eye” panorama - folklore and architectural complex of Shiroka Laka

08.30 – Departure from Orlovetz hotel on the route to Trigrad gorge – Buynovsko gorge – Shiroka luka. Visit of Devils Throat cave, Yagodinska cave, jeep safari to Eagle`s eye panorama platform, walking tour in Shiroka Luka. Return to Pamporovo in the afternoon. The cave ‘Dyavolsko garlo’ (Devil`s Throat) was

named in this way due to the rocks around its entrance, which looked like a gaping mouth. If the river carries something into this cave, it will never be retrieved. Some years ago, the rising river carried away 500 kilograms of wood and not a single whittle was discovered. When making researches, cave specialists poured colorful water along the stream, which went out after 2 hours. The exit of the river siphon is also quite gruesome. Cave specialists organize expeditions there, using rubber boats and sailing against the stream. Many Bulgarian and foreign cave specialists have explored the underground way of the river. Despite that, it remains a mystery even nowadays.

Excursions in the Rhodopes

“Yagodina” Cave is located in the Buynovo Gorge near the Rhodoope village of Yagodina. It is one of the most famous and most-visited caves in Bulgaria. Its galleries extend to a length of 8,501 meters, which makes it the 4th longest cave in Bulgaria and the longest in the Rhodopes. The temperature in the cave is between 6 and 8 degrees all year round, and it has a humidity of more than 90% (as do most caves). The itinerary continues for another kilometer, affording visitors the opportunity to observe almost every type of cave formation, but most impressive are the many cave pearls. They are formed as real pearls are, beginning with grains of sand that fall into the water and then are are coated with layer after layer of calcite, year after year, which is how they become round.

“Eagle’s Eye” - The beauty of the Buynovo Gorge can be appreciated from “a bird’s-eye view”, thanks to the creative ideas of the local tourist association which can be reached by off road trip with jeep. They have constructed what they call ‘The Eagle’s Eye’, a metal platform built on the precipitous cliff face of the ‘Saint Iliya’ Peak at a height of 1,563 meters, with impressive views of the entire surround area. During good weather, the entire Rhodope Range and even parts of Greece are visible, and individual peaks can be identified.

Folklore and architectural complex of Shiroka Laka - Shiroka laka Village is located in the Rhodopes, 23 km northeast of Smolyan and 16 km away from Pamporovo. The name of the village derives from the old Bulgarian word “laka” – curve, bend, meander. Shiroka laka was founded in the 17th century and has now become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Bulgaria. The village has preserved its architecture from the Bulgarian Revival Period, its musical culture, beautiful landscapes, and rich history.

2. Excursion to the reserve “Soskovcheto” and Eco-trail “The Waterfalls Canyon”

09.00 – Departure from Orlovetz hotel on the route to Smolyan – Soskovcheto reserve – Canyon of waterfalls. Soskovcheto Reserve and the Waterfall Canyon Eco-Trail start at the end of Sredok Housing Estate in the western part of Smolyan. The highest point of the trail is at about 1800 m above sea level and has a vertical drop of approximately 700 m. The trail goes up the river and crosses a number of water cascades forming a system of small and medium waterfalls that pour their waters from one to the other. The trail crosses metal and beautiful wooden bridges built over Elenska River. They are always followed by rest and picnic spots. Return to Pamporovo in the afternoon.

3. Excursion to “Uhlovitsa cave, the Smilyan village dairy “Rodopa milk”, “Agushevi konatsi”

“Uhlovitsa” cave - is one of the most beautiful caves in

Bulgaria. It is situated at a distance of 3 km north-east from the village of Mogilitsa, at about 30 km southwest from Smolyan and about 37 km from the resort Pamporovo. The cave is situated in the locality of Sinite Virove in the Rhodope mountain, near the border with Greece.

Architectural complex “Agushevi konatsi” - the largest late medieval feudal castle on the Balkan Peninsula is situated in the Rhodope Mountain. The building complex was built by three masters for 20 years – from 1820 to 1840, for the rich Turkish feudal Salih Aga and his three sons. The castle has 221 windows, 86 doors and 24 chimneys.

Smilyan Dairy “Rodopa Milk” - "Milk House" is the only hotel with its own dairy farm. For many people, this place is also known by the name of co-owner - Milkana. Near to small hotel is located the dairy named "Rhodope Milk" where incredibly delicious cheeses and other milk products are made.

4. Excursion to “Garda Dere” Gorge, Water cave

Water Cave and “Garga dere” gorge - The starting point of the route is 6.3 km away from Smilyan village, on the road winding in the beautiful valley of Arda river. The trail begins with a passage along a mountain path, most of which runs along the right bank of the picturesque Garga Dere, crosses it, and only after 50 meters on the right slope leading to the entrance of the cave "Golubovitsa" 2. It is a water cave with underground lakes and stream. Under the leadership of professional guides’ club "Mursalitsa" after being equipped with special equipment; you are ready to enter the cave. By exiting the cave everyone can try their skills in climbing and downhill 15 meters slope, connecting the entrances Golubovitsa 2 and Golubovitsa 1.

Smilyan - The village is located in the Rhodopes, 15 km

south from Smolyan. Here you can enjoy the exclusive Rhodope cuisine and interesting dishes from beans - typical for the region Smilyan bean. The village is the largest in the area, with 1,600 inhabitants. According to historians, Smilyan is one of the oldest settlements in the Rhodope Mountains and its old name was Smolen. Interesting sights include the clock tower, dairy, fishing ponds, Museum of beans.

Ostrich farm in Varadil area near the village of Chokmanovo - ostrich farm was established more than 10 years and was the first farm in Smolyan district. The farm bred male and female ostrich, ostrich babies and eggs are also sold and used in cooking and drawing icons on their shell, transforming them into attractive souvenirs.

5. Excursion to the Ethnographical Areal Complex of

Zlatograd

Zlatograd is a small town in the Rhodope Mountains located just 2 km away from the Greek border and 60 km southeast of Smolyan. Zlatograd Ethnographic Areal Complex lies in the heart of the town. It is an open-air museum which is also part of the everyday life of local people. The complex comprises an ethnographic museum, workshops and an exhibition of water equipment. After the tour around the complex tourists can sit and relax in some of the restaurants in the town or drink a cup of spun coffee made on hot sand and served in a special way.

6. Excursion to the town of Smolyan – eco-trail “The Bride”,

The Planetarium, the Church “St. Vissarion Smolyanski”, History museum “Stoyo Shishkov” and Art Gallery

Return to Pamporovo in the afternoon. Eco trail “The Bride” - The 750 m-long Nevyastata

Eco-Trail (the Bride Eco-Trail) is built outside the town. It leads to Nevyastata Rock (Sokolitsa, Turluka) – one of the symbols of Smolyan. It starts about twenty metres away from the Smolyan – Pamporovo road. The starting point of the route is to the right of the entrance arch of St. Pantaleimon Monastery. The trail wands its way through many picturesque spots – bizarre-shaped rocks overgrown with wild geraniums, moss, and fern.

The Planetarium and Church “St. Visarion of

Smolyan” - the biggest Planetarium with an astronomical observatory in Bulgaria is located in Smolyan. It started operations in 1975 and is one of the most visited tourist

attractions in the town. Opportunities for telescope observations are provided there, sessions are held in the stellar hall, performances-tales are available for the youngest children, etc. The largest Orthodox temple in Southern Bulgaria is also situated in Smolyan. The church was consecrated on 2nd July 2006. It is named after saint Vissarion of Smolyan, a local 17th century bishop and martyr.

Regional History Museum “Stoyu Shishkov” –

‘Stoyu Shishkov’ Regional History Museum is one of the most attractive places of interest for the tourists and guests of Smolyan. The Cultural and Historical Wealth of the Rhodopes from Ancient Times Until the Present Day Permanent Exhibition of the museum provides detailed information about the history of the region.

7. Excursion to Wonder Bridges and Museum of Rhodope

The unique natural landmark "Wonder Bridges" is situated in the central part of the Rhodope mountains, at 1450 meter altitude above sea level, on the ridge of the Chernatitsa hill. It has been protected natural site since 1949. It is comprised of two natural rock bridges located in a pine forest over the Aidarsko Dere River. The Golyam Most bridge is 12-15 meter-wide and 96-meter long. It rises over an abyss which is 43 meter-deep and 45-meter wide. It is assumed that the bridges were formed as a result

of a post-earthquake collapse of a deep karst cave hollowed out by the previously high-water river. This area of the Rhodope mountains is abound with simples, mushrooms and wild fruit. Numerous rare and endemic species have been entered into the Red Book and the Protected Plants List: Viola rhodopaea, Rhodopi avens, Morina persica, Veronica rhodopaea, Lathraea and Haberlea rhodopensis, known also as the Flower of Orpheus. Great opulence of animal species inhabits the neighboring forests. Approximately 270 bird species, as well as bears, wolfs, hares, foxes, wild goats, roes and deers. Triturus alpestris (salamander) and some bat species have been entered into the Red Book of animal species.

The unique Museum of Rhodope Karst in the Southeast Europe function in Chepelare, presenting the beauty of Rhodope caves their mineral wealth the modern and former inhabitants as well as the enormous bear twice bigger than its modern cousin. The museum offers a meeting with our distant ancestors inhabited the caves in the dawn of the human civilization and left there evidence for their rich spiritual and material culture. There is a museum collection of skis and ski sport telling about the rich history of the white sports in the region popular here from 30th years of XX century.

8. Excursion to “Momchil’s Fortress” near Gradat village

The remains of the medieval fortress located in Podvis in the area of Gradishteto, southwest of Gradat village. It is situated on a high rocky peak at an altitude of 1215 meters. With excellent visibility in all directions, occupying a strategic location on the Black River Valley. In the history of the castle is related to the boy hero in the year of 1343. It was found that inherits Fortress

Thracian sanctuary at the end of the V century BC. It is situated on the highest point in the area of the castle and it reveals a 360 degree view - to the peak Golyam Perelik, "Snezhanka" (Snow white) tower in Pamporovo, National Astronomical Observatory of Rozhen, Mount Freedom. Hence you can see the rocks, which are located on the other two strongholds of the total line of Justinian I defense against the barbarian invasions from the north: the fortress "Kale" in Turluka area north of Smolyan and fortress "Koznik" - south of Rudozem.

9. Excursion to Perperikon

Perperikon (or Hyperperakion or Perperakion) is situated in the Eastern Rhodope range, only 10 miles from the town of Kardzhali. Perperikon is perched on a rocky peak at 1,400 ft above sea level guarded at its foot by the village of Gorna Krepost. The gold-bearing river Perpereshka flows nearby forming a valley for some 7 miles long and 2.5 miles wide. This fertile sheltered place had attracted settlers in very ancient times, and today, dozens of sites clustered around the natural hub of Perperikon reveal layer upon layer of archaeological remains. Just a little further down stream, the Perpereshka river flows in to the artificial lake of Stouden Kladenets on the river Arda.

10. Horse riding nearby the village of Levochevo

If your childhood dream was to ride a horse, it is time to make it real. The horse riding base is situated only 7 km away from Pamporovo. There are trained instructors, who will show you the beautiful Rhodope areas and will carry you in spirit of a fantasy world. There are more than 70 horses of different breeds raised in the horse base and instructors can offer different in difficulties and time tours according to the possibilities and wishes of tourists.

11. Sport fishing (Padaloto dam nearby the town of Smolyan) & picnic at Smolyan lakes

If you live the tranquility of fishing, then you must know that there are many dams and rivers in this region, which are full of mountain trout, whitefish, carp and perch. The places for fishing around Smilyan village are included in the list of the most attractive fishing destinations for fishermen from the whole country. You can try your fisherman’s luck also in the high-water river Arda, which is full of barbell and grey mullet and you can fish a fresh carp in the fish farm, provided with mineral water. One of the most popular places only 17 km away from Pamporovo is ‘Padaloto’ fishing dam nearby the town of Smolyan. It`s a wonderful place where you may practice fishing and at the same time prepare a BBQ or picnic, play a badminton or football. After catching a fish, there are two possibilities - you can give it to culinary masters to cook it for you or you can take it home, where you can use your own cooking recipes. The fish

farm is also a suitable place for young fishermen, which creates exceptional emotions and memories for life.

Picnic Smolyan Lakes - Smolyan Lakes - attractive and cool, keeping the charm of the wild and full of healthy air, are still one of the secrets of the Rhodopes. Smolyan lakes are located sequentially between the city and Orpheus rocks surrounded by colorful and fragrant pine forests in summer become crave cool place to rest. Here you need a picnic and then continue with the lift to Snejanka or cost of any marked eco paths.

12. Excursion to Rozhen Observatory and the village of

Momchilovtsi 09.30 – Departure from Orlovetz hotel on the route to Rozhen meadows – Momchilovtsi. Visit to the Observatory and the village of Momchilovtsi. Return to Pamporovo in the afternoon. National Astronomy Observatory (NAO) at the Institute of Astronomy of Bulgarian Academy of Science is located amidst coniferous forest 1720 to 1750 m above the sea level, 6 km away along the road, 1450m from Rozhen ridge and 15 km away from Pamporovo resort. Rozhen NAO is still the biggest watching complex in the area of the optic astrophysics in Southeast Europe. It disposes of 4 telescopes.

The vicinities of Momchilovtsi village are picturesque and many tours around the Rhodopes begin from here. The area abounds in natural phenomena and cultural-historical places. There is a Museum, where is collected rich history of the village. The unique Church of “St. Constantine and Helena” is located in the center of the village; there are as well many chapels perched on green hills around the village. The healing Ayazmo is a daily meeting point for people from near and far for a silent and deep prayer. Dupchov and Kardjaliiski stones are beautiful and mysterious natural places of interest - breccias remaining from

ancient times, reminiscent of the battle of natural disasters, and sand hills “St. Atanas”, “St. Ilia”, “St. Dimitar”.

Visit to the Krastova gora area and the twelve chapels. Return to Pamporovo in the afternoon. The monastery “Holy Trinity” is located in the Middle Rhodope Mountains among beautiful nature. It is located in the religious complex Krustova gora and this place is given on the map as

Krustov vruh. During the last years, this monastery became very popular with the Orthodox Christians in Bulgaria as a Christian holy place and as a place of worship. This locality is situated at the height of 1545 meters above sea level, it is approximately 500 meters long and about 300 meters wide and it is a round meadow, surrounded by thick beech forests. The panoramic view from here is exceptionally beautiful, as you will see in the distance a group of mountain ridges and peaks.

Assenovgrad and Bachkovo monastery. Return to Pamporovo in the afternoon. Asen’s Fortress is the most interesting and visited tourist attraction in the Asenovgrad region. It is located 3 kilometers from the city on the top of a cliff, on the left bank of the Asenitsa River. There is a scenic route to the fortress branching off the road just south of Asenovgrad heading toward Smolyan. The natural cliff massif where the fortress is situated comprises an area of 12 hectares. With drops that are almost vertical and at times even overhanging above the river below, it is impregnable on three sides. Its strategic location and natural defenses explain why it has been used since the days of the Thracians, who fortified it in the 5th century BCE. The fortress was rebuilt during the time of the Roman Emperor Justinian as one of some 300 fortresses erected to defend the Empire against invasions by Slavic tribes.

The Bachkovo Monastery (Bachkovski manastir) is one of the largest and oldest Eastern Orthodo monasteries in Europe. It is located on the right bank of the Chepelare River, 10 km south of Asenovgrad. The monastery is known and appreciated for the unique combination of Byzantine, Georgian and Bulgarian culture, united by the common faith. It was founded by Prince Grigol Bakurianis-dze, prominent Georgian military commander in Byzantine service, in 1083. Since the 13th century, Georgians

lost their domination over the monastery, but nevertheless, Georgian traditions were preserved until the beginning of 14th century. The only part that has survived from the monastery's original structure is the ossuary, which has a specific architectural design and ancient frescoes (11-12th c.), and is situated 300 m away from the contemporary monastery complex. During the time of the Second Bulgarian Empire, Bachkovo Monastery was patronized by Tsar Ivan Aleksandar, which is evidenced by an image of him on the archs of the ossuary's narthex.

The Aviation Museum in Krumovo was established in 1991. It possesses some 6800 items and 65 flying machines – aircrafts, helicopters, gliders, aircraft engines, aircraft armament, radio-location stations, anti-aircraft defence devices etc.

The Old Town, as the complex is known, lies on a natural elevation – the three hills (the closely situated Dzhambaz Hill, Nebet Hill, and Taksim Hill). Some of the more interesting sites from the Roman Period are the Roman Theatre, the Roman Stadium, the Ancient Forum, and Irene Residential House. The Roman Theatre (the Amphitheatre) lies in a natural depression between Taksim and Dzhambaz Hills. It was constructed during the rule of Emperor Trajan (beginning of the 2nd century). It is extremely well-preserved. It used to have rich decoration and could seat up to seven thousand spectators. After it has been thoroughly restored, nowadays performances can be staged again at the ancient theatre. The Roman Stadium is

located beneath Dzhumayata Square where only part of it is visible. It was built in the 2nd century and was designed after the Stadium at Delphi – there are only 12 such stadiums in the world. The Ancient Forum lies near Tsentralen Square, in close proximity to the Central Post Office. It was built in the 1st century during the reign of Emperor Vespasian. It is a complex comprising buildings, a library, a mint, an odeon, etc. Irene Residential House can be seen in the Archaeological Underpass on Tsar Boris III Blvd. It has very rich mosaic decoration which includes a portrait of a woman signed with the name Irene and dates back to the 3rd – 4th centuries.

The discovered ancient remains of a bath show that hundreds of years ago the water had been used for treatment. The highest temple built in Bulgaria is situated 1993 meters above sea-level on "Svoboda" peak in the Middle Rhodopes. This is the Tekke (grave) of Enihan baba or the peak of Momchil yunak. There is no exact date of its erection, but according to various reports, it happened during XIV-XV century. The tomb was destroyed several times over the years. According to people from village of Davidkovo, Enihan was a saint, educator and healer. Another legend says he was an Ottoman military commander, swept mystical Rhodope Mountains. Nowadays there is a memorial monument on behalf of Momchil warrior. 604 steps lead to the grave.

The Devil's bridge is the biggest and most majestic bridge of the Rhodope mountain. It is a masterpiece of the Middle Age Architecture. Standing under it, you will be astounded by its huge dimensions and exquisitely elegant and symmetric forms. Arda river flows under it, forming an extraordinarily beautiful canyon. The Devil's bridge has been restraining the water flow from 300 years. At its present location there was a Roman bridge, part of the famous ancient road "Via Ignacia" connecting Aegean and Thrace in the Makaza Pass. This is the place where many films have been filmed. Devil's Bridge looks impressive and somewhat ancient. It resembles peaked structure, descending obliquely to both banks of the river and forming three arches with 4 smaller holes between them (used for recording the water level). The central dome, where the "seal of Solomon" is marked is the the highest point - almost 12 meters. Devil's Bridge is 56 meters long, 3.5 meters high and looks like cobblestone road. Lower handrails on both sides have been preserved from the old Roman bridge.
