Since her childhood in Missouri, Mary Beth Maisel has been experimenting with art-making. She retains gleeful memories of being introduced to finger painting in third grade, but it wasn’t until the 1980’s that she finally allowed herself to follow her dreams of becoming an artist.

Through drawing, painting, and sculpture, Mary Beth has learned to see in two and three dimensions. She recently discovered the excitement of monotype printing, a process that allows her to explore texture, color, shape, and form in layer after layer, until she has a unique piece of work with many layers of depth and meaning.

Her artwork emanates from who she is: each piece is a record of her history, journeys, and experiences. On vacation with her husband on the Greek island of Santorini, Mary Beth was with a painting group in a town called Oia when she created the wa-tercolor street scene on our cover. It conjured visions of favorite vacations for us (real and imagined).

Mary Beth is a long-time Newton resident. She has exhibited work at the Fuller Museum in Brockton, MA and is currently a member of the Concord Art Association, Newton Art Association, Newton Watercolor Association, and the Nature Printing Society. You can see her monotypes on the Newton Conservators’ web-site, and more of her work at mary-bethmaisel.com.

notesI love learning new things, love variety, and dislike routine. I’m a recreational artist and avid cook and baker, and I have degrees in art history and radiography. My name is Brenda April; I have wandered down quite a few career paths and have numerous hobbies. After staying home for many years to raise my two awesome kids, I thought, “What does someone with so many interests do when starting a mid-life career?” The an-swer… work at Newton Community Education of course, as a “do everything” person!

My job with NCE has evolved over the past four years. It started when my friend Robin (one of our two Adult Programmers) suggested that I volunteer to help with the Mindfulness Series. So I did! Then, when an evening opportunity arose at Newton South, I jumped at the chance. I began by helping Carmella with the evening adult classes, then started helping Jenny run NCE’s GED test center. I was witness to the many things that NCE offers the community. For a person with so many interests and a desire to keep learning, I was hooked! I wanted to be part of every class and help with every special event. When I moved to the Newton North main office to fill in for Jenny’s maternity leave two years ago, I felt alive amidst the pulse of the NCE operation. With Kids programs running after school and all summer, a multitude of adult courses al-ways being planned and managed, the Mindfulness series and events, and the Lifetime Learning program for people ages 65 to 90+, there is always something happening here.

So, what do I do for NCE? I am now working full-time with Lisa (the Kids Program Director), helping her run our very large Kids program. I am also the Program Coordinator for Lifetime Learning, working with our Director and a great steering committee to deliver live music, interesting speakers, and stimulating courses to the older demographic. And I am responsible for the logistics of most of our special events, most recently Dan Harris in Meditation and the Skeptic, and Krishna Das in Power of a Loving Heart. I also look after the catalog production schedule, which tells me that these notes are due now!

What more could a girl want?!

MIDDLE EASTERN FRAME DRUMMINGRegan Gibson, InstructorLearn how to play one of the world’s oldest musical instruments, the Middle Eastern frame drum. The frame drum is played with a unique finger style that distinguishes it from African djembe drumming, result-ing in a resonant, low-volume sound. These drums are found in many cultures through-out the world, and can be heard in music by Paul Simon and other popular artists with world-music influences. You’ll learn basic rhythms, scales, and rhythmic phras-es using a system known as Konnakol, and use a split-finger technique to get bass and treble (thom and tak) tones from the drum. We’ll play as a group, and by the end of class you’ll be able to apply your skills to many percussion instruments and musical styles. Bring your own drum or contact the instructor at www.regangibson.com to pur-chase one for $40. No experience necessary. Handouts will be provided.

SARGENT’S METHOD OF DRAWING WITH MODELSJack Neylan, InstructorJohn Singer Sargent’s paintings are world-renowned for their technique and beauty. However, during his lifetime as an artist and teacher, Sargent spent much of his time drawing. Sargent saw drawing not only as a valid medium in its own right, but as the fundamental medium for any artist. Learn Sargent’s techniques for drawing in both graphite and charcoal. You’ll begin with recreating his drawings and then gradually work towards creating your own work utilizing his methods. The course will culminate in two live-model sessions. Bring graphite pencils, charcoal pencils, and an 18” x 24” drawing pad to class. A $10-$20 model fee is payable to the instructor. All levels welcome.

INTRODUCTION TO OIL PAINTINGJack Neylan, InstructorOil paint is a fluid medium; the paint is slow to dry and easy to blend, so you can make changes as your work evolves. In this class you’ll learn the basic color wheel and how to properly mix paints. Starting with still-life painting, moving to abstract, and working towards live-model painting, you’ll develop new skills and gain a solid understanding of this medium. We’ll use linseed oils and stand oils as you explore on canvas, linen, and wood, and we’ll practice precaution as you learn to use turpentine mixes. Expect to complete three paintings. Bring a small cotton canvas, paint brush and a selection of paints. Other materials will be discussed in the first class. All levels welcome.

Our instructor will provide demonstrations and exercises in basic design using line, contour, shape, tex-ture, composition, shadow and light. Each week you’ll work from a different still life. In addition, there will be homework assign-ments and weekly critiques. Bring a 9” x 12” sketchbook, kneaded eraser, 2B, 4B, and 6B pencils, and a pencil sharpener. A $7 materi-als fee is payable to the instructor at the first class. New and returning students welcome.

There will be plenty of demonstrations to guide you along the way as you practice your technique on a wide variety of subjects from flowers to metal objects. Expect to progress from a restricted palette to full color compositions, focusing on how to identify and adjust the colors you observe. Bring a small box of medium grade vine charcoal sticks, two General’s 2B medi-um charcoal pencils, a kneadable and a Pink Pearl eraser, a chamois cloth, and a 14” x 17” pad of quality charcoal paper to the first class. Whether it’s in the realm of love, spiritual-ity, or more “worldly” achievements, you can learn how to achieve greater success.
